Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 This thread is aids. Congrats Donaldson. I don't know why people care so much. I bet Trout is losing zero sleep over this.
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 1, 2015 Author Posted November 1, 2015 This award is akin to a film winning an Oscar. It's never the "best" film that wins, just what's popular / promoted well, so the award doesn't mean much. This too is just a flashy / trite award that probably doesn't deserve much analysis. Basically Trout is Saving Private Ryan and Donaldson is Shakespeare in Love.
vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Basically Trout is Saving Private Ryan and Donaldson is Shakespeare in Love. I don't like this comparison; Shakespeare in Love was an utter piece of s***.

vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 OK more like Hurt Locker winning over Avatar? No, I agreed with that choice.
flafson Verified Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Wow did Donaldson really have Trout beat in baserunning according to fangraphs? Hmm, dunno about that one. Blue Jays were one of the better teams in base running last season. Probably not because of speed but more to do with good fundamentals and picking good spots to run on.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Good going Mr.Fysmc !!! Thanks for all the Rain
Praxis Verified Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 I'm actually pretty proud there's only one blue jay homer in this thread. This is a good board. I agree in general with this sentiment, but this is the same board which confidently predicted that AA could get along with Shapiro.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Didn't realize there was also a narrative attached to "best offensive player." Seems pretty straightforward and the writers still f***ed it up. Dude keeps getting unjustly robbed. I thought the purpose of the Hank Aaron award is best offensive player. Forget defense, baserunning, leadership and what the team won. Seems obvious Trout was better with the bat.
King Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Trout was robbed. Donaldson should personally fly to his house in Millville, NJ and deliver it the rightful award winner.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Wow did Donaldson really have Trout beat in baserunning according to fangraphs? Hmm, dunno about that one. Trout's base running has fallen off a cliff from age 20-23. He was 49-5 in sb/cs in 2012. 11-7 last year. His defense has fallen too. According to fangraphs in 2012 his defense and baserunning added up to +27, last year it was +5ish

That doesn't mean that JD had the edge on Trout over this, though.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Blue Jays were one of the better teams in base running last season. Probably not because of speed but more to do with good fundamentals and picking good spots to run on. Pillar is fast, Revere is fast, Donaldson is fast, Martin runs very well for a catcher, Reyes runs very well, Goins is quick, Travis is quick, etc. Negative points probably mostly come from Bautista's hilariously poor baserunning.

Encarnacion, Navarro, & 1/3 of Martin's season.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Encarnacion, Navarro, & 1/3 of Martin's season. Yes those too. And Smoakabello.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Encarnacion, Navarro, & 1/3 of Martin's season. EE is actually a good baserunner when he isn't battling a hammy problem
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 EE is actually a good baserunner when he isn't battling a hammy problem Okay there Buck. "Edwin is the best baserunner on the team"-Buck Martinez
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 EE is actually a good baserunner when he isn't battling a hammy problem I think he is a smart baserunner. He is slow though. That year he got 12-15 steals was pretty impressive for his speed.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Jays were more aggressive going from 1st to 3rd and 2nd to home this year. I thought Luis Rivera was much better this year.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Uhmm.. So let's look at all the numbers JD did well in but ignore wRC+ for what reason? That's probably the most important figure when evaluating offensive production and that one was nearly 20pts higher for a reason... Was that reason the 14 intentional walks that Trout got to Donaldson's 0? If we're going to strip away Donaldson's RBI, because they're so context-dependent, then we should also examine the context of Trout's inflated OBP due to playing with a s***** lineup around him.

Pretty sure intentional walks are not included in wOBA/wRC+ ?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Pretty sure intentional walks are not included in wOBA/wRC+ ? Really? I actually didn't know that. Trout should have won anyway, I'm just being contrarian.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Pretty sure intentional walks are not included in wOBA/wRC+ ? They are since they are a part of OBP, but Trout's OBP remains higher without the IBB. Let alone he plays in a pitchers paradise. Trout was clearly the better offensive player.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 how many of Donaldson's hits were direct game winners? he was a walk off wizard the first half.

Have to remember he also had tons of chances to win the game. I remember off the top of my head at least 3 chances to win the game with runners on base in the bottom of the inning that he failed.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 [/b] Greenwood impression needs work. Grant is back as our full-time contrarian. Greenwood has settled in as a good poster!
