burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 So Grantland just shut down and laid their writers off via a press release. What a terrible company ESPN is. Lots of smart writers on the market including Jonah Keri, Zach Lowe etc.. http://espnmediazone.com/us/espn-statement-regarding-grantland/
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I don't understand how this relates to Rogers.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 I don't understand how this relates to Rogers. Title probably wasn't the best. Terrible company who conducts business in a horrible way would be the similarities.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Author Posted October 30, 2015 How would you know any of this? I'd say Rogers does quite well for itself. You think the way Rogers conducted business with Beeston and AA was good? It was embarrassing.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 You think the way Rogers conducted business with Beeston and AA was good? It was embarrassing. In what way? They had to look for a replacement president since they knew that Beeston was retiring, so they sought out one of the best 'baseball guys' in the game in Shapiro, a smart and progressive guy with a lot of experience. They also didn't automatically resign AA, which may have caused tensions between the incoming president and his subordinate. They expanded the payroll when AA decided to go all in, putting us around top 10 in that regard. Honestly, I don't see anything there that was handled particularly poorly.

I think I don't know enough facts to generate an intelligent opinion about how Rogers conducted themselves...I would hope that view is shared by most.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 More fuel for the Bill Simmons HBO show. I hope HBO hires all the writers and creates a sports division.

First of all I thought Beeston was a terrible President but the way they handled it was a disaster. You don't conduct business with going behind a guys back calling other GMs (who you don't even have approval to talk to). You say something like "hey Paul, when you contract expires next year we are looking to bring someone new in so if you hear rumours of us talking to other people don't be alarmed etc.." Also I'm very hesitant to give any credit to Rogers because if they had their way Dan Duquette or Kenny Williams would be in charge and the Blue Jays franchise would be looking much much worse. Also hate the top 10 payroll BS. They make so much money that having a top 10 payroll doesn't mean anything. Based on their revenue the payroll should be closer to top 5. Do you think if the Red Sox had a top 8-10 payroll and didn't spend money when they had the chance to get a player, their fans would be happy?

Lots of smart writers on the market including Jonah Keri, Zach Lowe etc.. http://espnmediazone.com/us/espn-statement-regarding-grantland/ And this is likely just the beginning.. ESPN is headed for a ton of trouble as the new NBA and NFL deals make it difficult for the network to survive, as people and cable companies refuse to pay the huge rates ESPN is demanding. And their news coverage.. don't ask!
nmrch Verified Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 I don't even like reading a lot of sportswriting but i loved Grantland. And their TV and Movies stuff was amazing.
43211234 Verified Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 Not a surprise. What has yet to be said in this thread is that Bill Simmons had already raided Grantland, taking most of the talent for his scheduled tv show and website. Grantland will basically just be moving to HBO. This has been almost inevitable for the past month. Hopefully Hen Lindbergh lands there. One of the best baseball writers around.
Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted October 30, 2015 Posted October 30, 2015 If you think the AA story has some sour grapes, you should really look up how Grantland went from one of the most respected long form po culture / sports entertainment websites to deceased in the matter of months.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 And the site had such a great name too....
