The real question is here is AA+Gibby versus Manager+new GM,

I'm feeling like Gibby is probably a big enough negative (mostly based on his playoff decision making) to make it worthwhile. I'm sure Shapiro was cringing during the playoffs too

Just not sure if any competitive team (probably what Jose is looking for at this point) would be willing to play him on any significant deal starting in 2017 at RF. I can see a bad team doing it, but probably not a good one. And if they sign him to play RF and move him, I feel sorry for their media because he'll go nuts.

Actually, once I think about it I wonder how Jose Bautista's terrible attitude will affect his 'legacy contract'. Honestly I can't say I follow how much other players talk about their team's management etc, but given that Jose is about 10x more vocal than any other player I remember for the Jays, I can only imgaine he's one of the worst in the league for that, and it may cost him some money and years

It's gonna be funny to see the casuals cause a shitstorm on Twitter when we don't re-sign Price or Estrada. And when we get rid of Edwin/Bautista.

Hopefully the team makes to playoffs next year, or Shapiro will unjustly be one of the most hated men in Toronto.

I say they hold on to Bautista and EE, but if this team is 50-51 at the July deadline, I expect them to "blow it up".

It still shocks me how many new fans say to me "I hope we sign Price...he likes it in TOR".

Any casual that can look up ages online and do simple math can add up the cost of Martin; Tulo ; Jose 2017 ;JD post arb; Edwin 2017 etc etc and know we are not signing Price and probably not Estrada.

What about if they decide to subtract Dickey, Buehrle and Navarro?

They still have to be replaced with someone.

Also, Russell, and JD are getting big raises in 2016.

Have they proven to suck at drafting and development?

Drafted

Kipnis

Lindor

Chisenhall

Perez

Allen

Anderson

Tomlin

Acquired as prospect

Brantley

Santana

Gomes

Kluber

Carrasco

Bauer

McAllister

signed as amateur

Ramirez

Salazar

That's a boatload of talent developed by them that contributed meaningfully to their 2015 roster.

Cleveland is a good example where payroll limitations hurt them. They have a nice core build can never fill it with the extra pieces. With that said, you can't build a win only through the draft (even the teams you will cite had trades/some signings), and he made two pretty awful ones with Swisher and Bourn. I like the idea of building from the farm, but you still need to find the right guys to sign to win, especially with our relatively inflated payroll

Hey guys I have a strong feeling that the main "philosophical" difference was Shapiro wanted Alex to fire Gibby and Alex refused.

Yeah that could also be it. Or it could be that AA was angry at how Rogers handled the Beeston firing.

I hope we find out some day, but I worry we never will

Doesn't really change anything. RA stays....the other 2 gone. JD arb and Martins deal is back end loaded. Net $ gain if any doesn't get Price signed or even close.

They announced they exercised Dickey's option last night. Whether Shapiro trades him on the other hand might become a different story.

The reaction is kinda like when Farrell left for his Dream Job. Not because Farrell was liked, but I remember there being a doom and gloom feel.

Shortly after, AA pulled off the big 2012/2013 off-season deals and everyone forgot.

Really? Surprised there was no thread.

Well you're right that the Bourn and Swisher signing f***ed them. When you have payroll limitations, you can't afford to whiff on your big signings. The question worth asking though is to what extent was the outcome predictable at the time of the move.

Blair mentioned it on his show. Said that's what he's heard from sources.

You mean the Jeff Blair whop looooovvvveeees to make it sound like he has a great source and is dying to tell you but can't and his leaks usually don't turn out to be true?

Really? I had zero care when Farrell left but sadness when Gibby was signed back.

Payroll is at least going to go up a bit

They can replace Navarro with just about anybody, and whoever they replace Buerhle with won't cost as much and Dickey. They also paid Ricky Romero a bunch of money. I agree with you in that if they don't increase payroll a bit they won't sign Price, but if they want him they can definitely afford him, I think the idea is they're probably better off getting two lesser pieces who, when combined, cost the same amount (or maybe even more)

Fair points, thanks for laying that out. I still think Shapiro's guys do not "draft" better than Alex's, but perhaps the AA/AAA pitching development philosophy should become more saber friendly. I just hope we don't see the high ceiling/high risk scouting-based draft strategy change.

I was just mentioning some flexible options they had regarding payroll, but thanks for mentioning that, I didn't know actually!

I can't see Shapiro being too enamored with a 40 year old knuckleballer. They really seem to emphasize hard throwers in Cleveland.

Non-news

We all just expected it I guess

Not really non news though, considering the rotation is the biggest question mark heading into next year.

I casually posted it in General Jays Thread when I woke up. But it quickly got overlooked right after with the AA news.

I can't see any of us enamoured with a 40 year old KB arm. But someone has to start for us in 2016 :)

And every time I watch Noah pitch that feeling seem to get stronger.

That's just it

It was a complete no-brainer to pick up Dickey's option

While both were good players, Swisher was (32?) and Bourn was a (29?) year old speedster, so I would say a top tier GM may have thought of this, and I'm sure it was brought up when they were making these decisions that both could decline, so I would say it was at least something they were talking about, and so predictable
