Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 "tear-down" would likely just mean trading EE for young, controllable arms. The Blue Jays don't have a terrible burden of long term contracts so really, Law's point about a tear down coming is rather silly and stupid. There really aren't any teams who need a DH on a one year deal who have controllable, talented young arms that they'd deal for him.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 AA wasn't under contract. What was Shapiro to do? Put a gun to AA's head and say sign here? AA wanted to sign here... But not with the shackles that would've been part of the contract. You might not believe it, but i have no doubt that they didn't want to give AA control like a "normal" gm would have.
intrigid Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Why would Law say that AA was fired? That's patently false. Only false in the most technical sense. The act of hiring Shapiro as president was the act of saying goodbye to AA. Only a fool believes that AA would tolerate a snubbing of such epicness.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 The track record proves that they would have a great draft this year? lol. The track record says that they would probably whiff on several high schoolers with high picks, fail to sign a very high pick, hit on one or two HS selections, and maybe hit on a college guy. Alex focused on select high school arms; Shapiro in impact bats. What will change?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Meh. He drafted Deck McGuire over Chris Sale and Yasmani Grandal. He was in the room when we drafted Chad Jenkins over Mike Trout. He failed to sign two 1st round picks in his tenure. He took DJ Davis over Michael Wacha and Corey Seager. He hit on Syndergaard, but then he squandered him. Other than that, it's pretty much Stroman and a mixed bag. Comon dude, you of all people should know that the draft is hit and miss. Are we going to s*** on all the other teams because all of them passed over Albert Pujols dozens of times?

It's so insane... we're told that you need an army of "super scouts" to do this... but the super scouts missed Sale?? Missed Trout??? If super-scouts exist they should be able to recognize Trout, Sale, recognize the value of the cuban players, the japanese players. And if they can't do that.... well then it's hard to believe super scouts exist... and you have to give equal weight to analytics... understand it's a crap shoot.

That's the nature of the MLB draft and I don't buy any of this conjecture. The excellent results are there on the whole and that's all I care about.

If you believe the 'scolding' incident, then maybe he felt that he wasn't respected or going to be respected enough if he stays. Law confirmed that Shapiro was highly critical of AA's deadline performance
intrigid Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 AA wanted to sign here... But not with the shackles that would've been part of the contract. It wasn't the "shackles in the contract" that was the problem. It was the organizational structure. AA wanted and expected the promotion to president. He was snubbed. That's all there is to it.

Are we going to s*** on all the other teams because all of them passed over Albert Pujols dozens of times? I'm not s***ing on him, I think his draft record is average. The point I'm making is that AA having a good draft is anything but "a given."

I like AA, but I just don't see an elite draft record.

art_vandelay275 Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 All this about Rogers getting bad rep, isn't it the case of "there's no such thing as bad PR?" Based on the media outlets that they owned and the services they provide, it's not like consumers are going to unsubscribe or anything is it? I may be talking out of my ass here as I don't live in TO. Here in the US, if I am pissed at my cell carrier or cable company, there are very limited options and in most cases, people stick with it... Rogers is probably trusting on Shapiro not only not screwing up from '15 but build upon it and the fans will still come regardless of how they feel about ownership... in other words, they are counting on it all depends on the product on the field...
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 I actually specifically remember Grant during that draft thread pounding the table for the Jays to draft Chris Sale, lol.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 It's very possible that these guys just don't like each other. They've had a business relationship for 6+ years now. One, or both, could have been aware they wouldn't gel. I highly doubt this has anything to do with one meeting.
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 It seemed hard to fk this up, but they might have managed it.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 The excellent results are there on the whole and that's all I care about. The results have been excellent for a two months out of 6 years. It was the greatest two months in the last 20 years. And it is very fair to bring it up. Grant - " I am Grant. The results have been excellent for the last two months. I believe this will continue. I am Grant and I love AA" If you said the above people would like you. However you talk like a weasel. You have huge recency bias and cherry pick a lot The results as a whole have not been excellent. 2013 all-in year -- not excellent. Halladay trade -- not excellent (in a weird way the jury is still out, because Devon Travis is indirectly a product of that deal) The results as a whole have been excellent. That is a lie, you are a liar. The results have been mixed, with the best moments the most recent.

If AA knew he was doing this, it makes that press conference of his just seem surreal in hindsight. Was he just trying to set up unrealistic expectations for the new guy by saying the team would go after Price? What about all that talk about character guys, good team players and all that? That rings pretty hollow right now.
aselvana Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 its somewhat shocking for toronto sports fan, the last two president hires were shanny and masai, which both opted for a wait-n-see approach.

Whether or not you believe his draft record is above average on the whole is a different matter. I like AA, but I just don't see an elite draft record. Bringing up the 'he didn't draft Mike Trout' argument is total horseshit and you know it. Tony Reagins drafted him, the same guy that traded for Vernon Wells. I won't argue over the semantics of the word elite, but having one of the best drafting front offices gave me comfort that we would be a fairly competitive team on a perpetual basis.
fireballW Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 So it sounds like AA is probably going because Shapiro doesn't like how he traded the prospects at the deadline. Guess that makes sense from his pov since he doesn't understand how to build up a farm system as quickly as AA can.

I agree, I don't think that specifically that one meeting made AA not want to resign, but it kind of shined light on the situation. Personally I wasn't away that Shapiro's been critical of AA's moves, and this seems to be stretched back to at least the deadline

FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Lolwut. Anyway, AA made three colossally bad trades (Napoli, Marlins, Dickey) and another one that doesn't look so good (Price). He also hired that dumb hick Gibbons as manager. He only made the playoffs once. He is replaceable.

The Flames and the Leafs have these clusterf*** organizations now with GM's and multiple senior advisors like Brian Burke. All guys who are used to being in charge. It's a recipe for infighting and poor decision making. AA is out and Shapiro is the man. Let's roll with that. It's going to be fine...or its not...in which case he will be go at some point. AA did some good work but the state of our Org is no panacea.
