fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I think it will be an interesting situation that can turn very good. If egos don't clash, but instead they discuss ideas together, it would be a great partnership. I personally like people who have different philosophies working together, generates more ideas and less bad moves happen because every small thing will be discussed.

I don't think AA is necessarily a guy with hard set philosophies anyways. By most acounts he is hard working guy who is a total sponge for ideas. We've certainly seen him change quite a bit. He started with a real game the system, find devalued assetts kind of approach and then he went old school with starting pitching and speed being a focus and then finally an emphasis on veteran leadership and a more hollistic approach to run prevention. He will be open to Shapiro's ideas and continue to evolve. I think getting him away from Beeston and closer to someone with modern ideas will be to his benefit. If he can focus on his soft skills and have to carry less of the intelectual weight that will put the Jays in a great position.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Yeah, AA strikes me as a type who just needs a plan and to be pointed in whatever direction will make it happen, rather than a guy who's set to do things by a certain methodology.

At least not in a visible manner. All he pretty much did was trade Dee Gordon for Howie Kendrick and rape the Padres on the Kemp deal. There's nothing to suggest he's suddenly going to throw around money like a lunatic or dispose of the methodology that made him extremely successful.

Those two moves + the Anderson and McCarthy signings. One of which worked well, and the other could still work well.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 The Kemp trade was a franchise saving maneuver. Imagine the Wells trade for Toronto, but if Toronto had have kept Napoli. And then imagine that Napoli at the time was a 26 year old two-way player with four years of control left. And then also imagine that Toronto somehow got two mediocre pitching prospects thrown in, for shits and giggles. Most lopsided trade of the millennium? Kemp will make $21M per year through 2019 and he will probably be a replacement level player for most of that time. Grandal might be a top 5 catcher in baseball.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 How are we determining that Alex is still an AVG/RBI/HR guy? I think it's safe to say he's become a lot more analytic during his tenure. More importantly, I haven't seen or heard anything that would lead me to believe that AA is someone who is difficult to coexist with ala Mike Scioscia.

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 The Dee Gordon/Howie Kendrick sequence might not work out. In Howie Kendrick (plus comp pick) Kike Hernandez Chris Hatcher Austin Barnes Out Dee Gordon Dan Haren Miguel Rojas PTBNL Actually, that will probably turn out fine for LA.

The success of that trade was predicated on the notion that Dee Gordon is not legit, a premise I still accept as probably true. I'm super annoyed he was good this year, though.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 I think people are blowing up this Alex contract thing. I think its pretty clear hes coming back. Its just a slow time in the city. Its not fun to make fun of the Leafs anymore because at this point its just sad. The Raptors are fun sometimes but in reality they are never going to win anything meaningful. I mean the Atlantic Division is great... Oh wait no its not. Different GM same mistakes. Giving outrageous contracts to role players like Caroll and Joseph that will very much regret and tie our hands for years. But wait the payroll is going to go up next year! To bad we will likely throw all that money at keeping a worse version of Corey Maggette in DeMar DeRozan. I heard the soccer team made the playoffs but who really gives a s*** about that. That league is basically house league soccer compared to the professional leagues. Maybe Soccer's version of the ECHL in hockey.

Thinks "we'll be in the game... 3-1 against Yankees after trade" Id prefer him to publicly announce his expectations that Price will price himself out of their range. Better yet, that giving him nearly a quarter of a billion dollars probably isn't a good idea.

They could have bought him out and seen no discernible change in payroll, had they wanted to. They also make the playoffs this year with or without Grandal. It was still a brilliant trade, I won't dispute that.

More accurately, the tension for him has been scouting based player evaluation vs. analytics based player evaluation.

Thinks "we'll be in the game... 3-1 against Yankees after trade" He was talking to Jamie Campbell and Zaun so he's obviously going to dumb it down for the audience. Even then I have no problem with the quote because Price was a huge reason they won 3 of the 4 games and could of easily won all 4.

But i'm worried about this.... Here is Shapiro's RECORD during his almost 15 year tenure at GM/President: -4 teams with winning records in 15 years. -one playoff team (2007) and one team (2013) with a 1 game wildcard playIN game. -erosion of season ticket base from 27,000+ to barely 5,000 today. -horrific (abysmal) drafting record, particularly 1st round in pasat 15 years. (look it up). -horrific record of FA signings in regards to performance. -consistently one of MLB's lowest payrolls. -promised in 2002 after initial team teardown that fans in Cleveland were seeing a "new paradigm" where future rebuilds passe, team would win consistently. -showed arrogant and disdain to Cleveland fans, and speaks in "Harvard-speak" corporate lingo at all-times. Very deceptive and dishonest. -Bottom Line: presided over consistent and heavy erosion of Cleveland Indian's team/organziation and fan base. It gets worse from there. Be careful in LISTENING to what this man says, or better-doesn't say.
