jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Which starter do you think the Jays could sign on a 1 year deal worth $12 million this offseason? Someone comparable to Dickey (in terms of performance) likely will require a multiyear deal. The only guys I could think of are some of the vets out there like Colon or Lackey. Colon probably would sign a 1 year deal with an option. I think Lackey gets a 3 year deal from someone worth $40M.
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Goins / Travis / Tulo need to stay together, we aren't going to find a cheaper but better option at second base than Travis/Goins. That is about as good of mid infield trio that we could ask for and between nagging injuries and regular rests Goins will get plenty of play time and we won't lose much of a step compared to having to play Kawasaki for example. As for Dickey, they pretty much have to take his option. With so many holes in the rotation, $12MM is pretty fair market value for getting 200 innings and a 2 WAR back end starter for this team. I think the most difficult aspect with Dickey, isn't about knowing what you're going to get start to start, but just having that personal catcher available for him. I never believed Estrada needed Navarro, it was purely to give Martin his day off. (Estrada basically throws 2 pitches). I know I'm alone here but I wouldn't be against having Thole as the back up catcher while Martin focuses more on our young pitchers. That's kind of why we got him, to work with our younger pitchers and bring the best out of them like he's done throughout his career.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 first brunt now zaun ... are these guys really serious that shapiro may let AA walk? i would think it's a done deal... Brunt is a careful and considered journalist. I've heard him twice now talk like he knows something we don't regarding AA's future with the Jays. He is not the type to just swim against the current unless he thinks there is a material reason for it. He inferred it may still happen but he has a view that there is a good chance it wont.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 WAR: 2013 - 1.7 2014 - 1.7 2015 - 2.1 We have to pick up that option for the 200 IP even though we all hate the KB. And that undervalues him. His defense and pitch mix maxes him a legit FIP-beater, and there's also the Dickey effect.

There is also the personal catcher effect. That aside, his results will almost always beat out his predictions. I think its because his low BABIP is more sustainable than predictions presume. Pretty sure that throws everything out of whack.
Slugger Verified Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 I don't understand how you can lump Goins in with the Penninton/Barnes of the world. The guy is clearly an every day player. Having said that, he shouldn't start over Travis.

The knuckleball is a known FIP beater, and there's an effect of Dickey being a great defender. RA-9 WAR is better for him.

He's an every day player for some teams while a great depth piece for competitive teams who have better mid infield options.

The guy is clearly an every day player. Having said that, he shouldn't start over Travis. So far, Ryan Goins career numbers are slightly higher than Johnny Mac's, but he's young so they could improve. But, I think everyone recognizes that Tulo has shorstop and Travis has second to start the year, which leaves Goins as a backup. Goins doesn't really add anything as a bench player, beyond being able to fill in, in the case of injury, and maybe late game defensive replacement for Travis. So, if they can get something decent for Travis great. If not, he's a decent backup, and winning teams need depth, even if it seems like we're wasting talent.
Slugger Verified Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 How many current major league starting middle infielders is he better than? This is a really great question. I can look into this later in the day when I'm not in bed looking at my phone with 1 eye open.

Last season his wRC+ was 28....the year before 63. He was a 1.5 WAR with 428 PAs this year. Penny was 1.6 in 2014. Goins had encouraging signs with his BB rate 2015. The glove gets him in the everyday player discussion but he hasn't proven he can hit enough. Edited October 26, 2015 by BigCecil
Slugger Verified Member Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 and maybe late game defensive replacement for Travis. Well, I'm not so sure Travis needs to be replaced defensively late in a game. I could be wrong, I haven't looked at the numbers in awhile.

Travis shouldn't need a late inning defensive sub, but knowing that our SS & 2B are kind of... sort of... maybe made of glass he's a pretty damn good $500K back up who will get plenty of game time from rest days alone.

As much as I like Travis and his productive 5 week MLB career it's still just 5 weeks at the start of the season.

If I ever hit up a Rockies game, I'll give you a shout. Did a west coast trip in California this past August and hit up all the ballparks. Next trip I'd like to do in the next couple of years would be Colorado, Arizona, and the Northwest like Oregon and Seattle.

No my mom grew up in TO but I grew up in the States- lived mostly in the Rocky Mountains and the West Coast. I get back to TO once or twice a year although I used to spend most of the summers there as a kid.

Should be a fun series with it being Tulo's return.

Oh wow, that would be awesome to see the Jays at Coors Field. Depending on when they are in town and if I could align it with a D'Backs game and Mariners game as well. Also, need the Canadian dollar to improve because its awful to travel now down to the States.
