Such optimism after the offseason and that disastrous game turned out to be an omen for that season. That whole week was a nut kick, capped off with Dickey getting totally shelled by the Sox. Was there even a high point at all in 2013? Probably that 11-game winner, but I was in Mexico at the time and got back only in time to see the last game (which I bought tickets and went to: blowout v. the O's)

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 The biggest letdown was the duo of Josh Johnson and Brandon Morrow Emilio Bonifacio and Melky Cabrera were pretty damn bad too. Damn, the whole f***ing team sucked that year.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Three more weeks until pitchers and catchers report! Man this off season has actually went by pretty quick. Being in the post season does make a difference!

It was a year where the injuries excuse is valid. Applies to Melky also, although you could also argue Melky sucked because it wasn't a contract year.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Neal Cotts is still an FA

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Cabrera had a f***ing tumor. Yes, cant really call him out on that first season with that going on in his back. 2.5 WAR in his 2nd season for us for 8mm was good value. I'm so glad he wasn't resigned.

I'm so glad he wasn't resigned. That 2nd season was a gift from the gods. Gave the Jays a chance to get out of it with a q.o. something that seemed impossible after the first season. Even without the benefit of hindsight, it was pretty obvious that it was a perfect time to cut bait. Edited January 28, 2016 by KingKat
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Yep re Melky - 0.3 WAR last year and why would you expect him to get any better now
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Cabrera had a f***ing tumor. Yeah, and he wasn't playing for a contract either. I'm not going to blame the s*** season entirely on the tumour, given his history.

Even without the benefit of hindsight, it was pretty obvious that it was a perfect time to cut bait. I forgot we got a QO pick out of that too. I didn't expect it after his first year in TOR. When Saunders went down and we bumped Pompey back after only 20 games we did have a gaping chasm in LF though. Thankfully Pillar stepped up (I still cant believe he had a WAR over 4) and gibby cobbled it together until Revere came over. Even with all that, Melky still isn't worth what ChiSox paid him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Who did we draft with the Melky comp pick?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Who did we draft with the Melky comp pick? Jon Harriss
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Jon Harriss Well that's disappointing.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) Well that's disappointing. BBRef tells me he's skinny as fck and had a bad year in rookie ball. Hmmm Edited January 27, 2016 by G-Snarls
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Harris could still be ok, don't take first season numbers as gospel true talent numbers. Pretty boring pick, but people were surprised he fell so far. One of those 1st round low upside "safe" picks, AA will be remembered by (none of which have actually worked out). Just hope he doesn't turn out to be Jenkins/Deck.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Lets hope not, maybe he learned something after the first two.

Just hope he doesn't turn out to be Jenkins/Deck. I think you could also compare him to Stroman....and he worked out OK. Harris was expected to go top 15 and fell into the Jays lap. Same thing happened with Stro. To be honest, if Giolito fell one more pick in that draft - I suspect the Jays would have taken him and then DJ Davis at pick 21 and Stro would be wearing another jersey right now...
