Price scares the crap out of me for two reasons.

His recoil at the end of his motion = injury waiting to happen.

He has not developed quality secondary pitches which means he won't age well as his velocity declines.

So was Verlander. Pitching is never a sure bet to do anything.

At least Verlander is good in the playoff, estoy en lo cierto?

He has one of the best changeups in baseball? His cutter and curveball are definitely good pitches too.

He has a plus change with a plus fastball and plus command. You can live off that.

Verlander hasnt been as bad as you think. He has given surplus value for his contract the first three years combined and he projects to have a higher value than any of the Jays pitchers other than Stroman

Don't be surprised if Verlander is back to 3-4 WAR next year.

I think signing Price and extending Bautista gives us 2-3 chances to win the World series here

Everyone should want this everyone should want a championship. Wasn't last year amazing. Imagine 2 or 3 more years like that

Speaking of contracts did anyone else notice Stroman retweeted this article. Article lists young players that would make sense to get extended. What would a realistic Stroman extenstion look like to have a couple of club options to buy out his FA years?

I noticed it too and it was kind of interesting. Stroman pretty much retweets any article about him so it could be nothing but there might be legitimate interest on his part. As for potential contracts, there haven't been many pitchers who've signed pre-arb extentions with only 1 year of service time compared to position players. The obvious comparison is Bumgarner

There are enough fairly similar comparisons to get a decent idea. Quintana and Sale. Chris Archer. Carrasco. Ventura.

Most of those extensions fit the same template.

4/$22 + two $9M options

5/$23M + two $12M options

6/$25.5M + two $10M options

5/$26.5M + two $11M options

5/$32.5M + two $13M options

Remarkably similar! We have a pretty good idea of what a Stroman extension should look like.

Donaldson had a couple of great interviews today with fan 590 and TSN 1050. Said if Jays were in the same "area code" in terms of money he wouldn't be surprised at all if Price comes back and that him, Tulo and Bautista kept at him to sign an extension haha.

But one of the most interesting things he said was that despite the metrics he felt he had his best defensive season this year and he said when Tulo came over he thought it made him a better defender being able to pick his brain. He specifically mentioned his troubles with throwing errors in the past so I went to baseball reference to see if there was anything there.

Interestingly I checked his game log and after Tulo came over in the trade JD made 4 errors (all throwing) but all 4 of them were in August and he didn't commit a single error in September. Obviously there are flaws looking at just errors but I couldn't find any UZR/DRS data in monthly splits. Something to watch for next year!

except for Ventura all those guys had 2 atleast years of service time though right?

Price playing the "I think I'll go to another country" game to get the big boys to back up the Brinks trucks.

I'd be 'ok' with a front loaded deal that contains a mutual opt out in 2-3 years to mitigate the long-term risk, but that's unreasonable to expect given Price will be able to get a guaranteed 7 years and close to $200m with his eyes closed. And for that kind of cost, I'm WAY out...

He was 29/30. Doubt he had his best defensive season. Just feel good ********.

I think so, but that doesn't really strike me as a material difference.

I think stroman projecting as a super 2 would make a little difference. Were those comparables super 2 as well?

I would gladly do 5/30 with a couple of option years at 12-14 million for Stroman.

Colon would beg to differ.

It really doesn't matter much at all. Those contracts were between 4 and 6 years. You just wiggle the years, AAV, and option values to make the math work.

Any extension that guaranteed him money in exchange for options on a couple of his FA years would be awesome.

Jays need to fill out an entire AAA rotation too. Even the Forever Bison himself Chad Jenkins is out of options and can't be a AAA option anymore.

Maybe there is a sleeper out there that Shapiro can find.

Jays sign Scott Diamond to a minor league deal

Good sign

There's a name I hadn't heard in awhile. Pitched a lot innings for the Twins in 2012 and 2013 and then fell off the map. Pitch to contact guy. Not terribly exciting but I suppose he could make an emergency start in a pinch.

Is Deck McGuire MLB ready yet?

Got to love those low ceiling college pitchers that you can just rush to the majors.

(BTW, he's a Dodger now)
