I think at the same time you do need a number 1/2 starter. You can fill out the back end of the rotation with cheap fillers year after year but if you want to win in the playoffs you need to have a top end starter.

Dude can you change your avatar please

You can disable it with the Stylish addon. (this code also eliminates the annoying thanks boxes)

That's the way to go imo. Invest long term in position player stars and go for bargain old guys in the rotation. John Lackey is still a very good pitcher who will not be paid what he's worth and won't get more than 2-3 years.

Lackey is a guy who I am thinking more and more about. What would be reasonable for him, 2-year, $20M? He's 38 I think.

36.

We should trade for Papelbon, we need a closer, Osuna and Sanchez should battle for spot in rotation.

Papelbon value is low now, maybe they can pick up some of the salary too. The guy is a competitor.

No.

Easiest ignore yet.

Pretty sure the season would be suspended at some point for a murder investigation if pabelf*** was a Blue Jay and Bautista and Donaldson would be suspects.

David Price probably isn't a great candidate to re-sign for either party

A well reasoned article. I like the idea of signing Jason Heyward and trading from the outfield depth for pitching. Maybe package Revere, Pompey and Sanchez for something, then hope Alford continues to rise through the ranks. A Pillar/Heyward/Alford outfield could be intriguing in a couple of years.

Really good piece! 240 Million seems like a lot more than he will get, no?

Thank you! Fangraphs proposed a $27m AAV and I proposed a $30m AAV (mainly cause Scherzer just got it but I know some is deferred). So it's a $3m per year difference which isn't significant (this was published before I saw the crowd sourcing or else I would've used that). I mentioned in the article you could quibble over years. Crowdsource said 7, I guessed 8. Both are reasonable imo.

That could get you a lot imo. Probably a $70m asset.

40 Million is pretty significant? I think if there were less pitchers on the market he would get more. Apparently he wants to go to an NL team because he wants to hit so that leaves the Dodgers, Cubs, Giants and Cardinals as the big 4 teams that could sign him. If the Dodgers sign Greinke then they might not want to spend 200 million on a number 3 and that would apply for the Cubs as well.

So really I don't see there being a huge bidding war for him. Of course that could change..

Pompey is playing RF in the DWL..... He's really good defender. Holy s***!!

I really, really, really don't want to trade Pompey. He's got a lot of tools. And he's Canadian. And for those who say who cares he's Canadian I say FYSMC. I love Canadians. The more the f***ing better.

I'd much rather move Pillar at his peak than Pompey just before he hits his peak.

Not sure if I am randomly making this up but, didn't Shapiro make a proprietary OF stat called DZone? Going off the name something tells me he may value players like Pompey and Pillar. Again I could be full of it, but think I read this somewhere.

What do you classify as a $70 asset, like a 5-6 WAR pitcher? Could that get us Carrasco or Ross?

This x 100. Pillar probably peaked with this season, his hitting will never allow him to put up more offensive WAR imo. Pompey had a .400 OBP from AA to his 2nd run through AAA last season with his new approach. I could see a .360 OBP from him in 2016 and a .285 AVG, with 25-35 steals and 5-10 HR.

OBP a bit high, 0.330 to 0.340 more reasonable... agree with other numbers, and he is not far off Pillar, D-wise

Who cares if he's Canadian. I'd take a good German player over an average Canadian player 100 times out of 100.

Maybe, but I think his approach is even better than that. I think your estimation is a tad bit conservative. .345-.365 seems real possible if that approach continues.

Who plays CF for you guys if you trade Pillar im just curious...

Pompey or Heyward, if we sign him.

Pompey-Pillar-Heyward left to right would be a great outfield defense. Then if/when Alford becomes a realistic option to push one of them out, you can decide between Pompey and Pillar from there (preferably Pompey).

Damn you guys, you got me thinking we have a shot at Heyward and I know it's not going to happen. Surprise me, Shapiro.

Better trade for Max Kepler or you're out of luck. The closest thing we've had to a German was Belgian Brian Lesher.
