Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Why? This is a great opinion and I would hope more people share it. They'd be nuts not to share that opinion. A 25 year old outfielder, top 3 defensively according to the numbers, great baserunner as far as I can tell, 23-3 in steals. He had his best hitting season as a 20 year old rookie. Career high 91 walks. Flashed 30 homer power as a 22 year old. Headed to the prime of his career having shown, at one point or another, every tool in the tool box. Just hasn't put it all together in one season. Still puts up 6 WAR one way or the other. The most interesting man in baseball. He could be worth 40 million dollars a year if his power comes back and the D holds.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 This is why we shouldn't have tanked after securing the division title. That extra home game looms large now... Yup. But the people that said it wasn't a big deal then will never admit to being wrong.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) ...Jose really needs to be moved out to 1st base/DH full time by 2017 (if we re-sign him) and needs to be slowly phased into it starting next year. I love the guy (as my avatar would show) but RF defence has regressed way too much for us to tolerate for much longer and if he happens to be stubborn about playing RF when contract talks come up then we need to move on from him. I was making this case the other night with a couple of knowledgeable posters who said: - its premature to move Jose to 1B as its a spot for heavy bats and his D numbers show he is above league avg. We all know his arm. I was surprised but they were right about the numbers except this season which was chalked up to the shoulder injury. - he likes RF and its a point of pride with him. He doesn't like the IF and has been clear about that. The last time we put him at 3B he missed time for back spasms. Whatever the numbers say, my eyes tell me he sucks pretty badly in RF right now. Is anyone confident on balls hit his way. I get this Reyes-like feeling on anything remotely tough hit there. I love the guy too, but the "almost catches" and bobbles and endless flailing around is adding up. I would still like to move him to 1B or DH him at some point soon. But the people that said it wasn't a big deal then will never admit to being wrong. That goes for not just the posters on this Board who said "no big deal". It will be the same for AA and Gibby etc. It was an odd approach and the BALT weather didn't help. HFA is a thing like it or not. Its real for this team. We play better at RC usually period.

Not necessarily the forum, but people seem to think signing Price or another good starter should be the first priority, like RealAccountant. Adding Heyward should be #1
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Heyward would MASH in the RC. I would also go after him hard. We could dump Revere and Saunders to offset some of the cost. A Heyward signing would also bode well for 2017 and beyond. We'll probably be losing one of Edwin or Jose, so having another great bat and outfield option in Heyward would be huge.

Not necessarily the forum, but people seem to think signing Price or another good starter should be the first priority, like RealAccountant. Adding Heyward should be #1 Agreed. Signing Heyward also would give us a lot of outfield capital to try and deal for an elite starter (Martinez, Carrasco, or Ross?). With ninja AA doing the negotiating, I wouldn't be surprised if we landed one of them for a lot less than Market Value (a la Donaldson). There's also the chance that Osuna transforms into an elite strikeout/low xFIP starter, which could cover that as well.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 They aren't THIS good. Every ball on the ground seems to get through. Felt for Hendriks last night. He was yanked after 2 GB and an E. Lets hope the BABIP gods catch up to them starting today. I'm a bit confused by Bautista's play right now. His shoulder is healthier and his throws have gotten better but his ability to field balls seems to be getting dramatically worse for no apparent reason. Not sure what the deal is.

It was his throwing shoulder that was injured... Has nothing to do with his bad defense. Its just age catching up with him.

Yes that's what I'm saying. What I'm asking is WHAT DOES have to do with his bad defense. Just age doesn't really satisfy me as an answer. Age shouldn't rob you of all your instincts which seems to be what's happening. We're not talking about loss of range which obviously would get worse over time. It's like his judgement is gone.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Bautista still has electric bat speed and keeps in tremendous shape. As long as he continues to hit you find a spot for him. That may no longer be RF and honestly hes never been a good outfielder. Anything he has to run back on he has problems with. Hes usually pretty good at tracking balls side to side especially towards foul territory. Will be interesting if he will be willing to change positions. I think if they were to tell him they wanted to bring in someone like Heyward he would be fine with it. Hes always looked pretty good on the IF. He doesn't have the elite range but he makes all the plays. First Base he could probably be above average. Even at 35 he would be an athletic 1B who moves well around the bag. He's going to age well especially if we limit the wear and tear.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Sign Heyward. Shift Bautista to 1B. Ask him nicely. If he tells the team to GTFO, put him on the restricted list like what the Nats did to Alfonso Soriano. Or ask him to waive his 10-5 rights and trade him for the next crop of studs.

You and I and NJH were talking about this the other night. His throw last night was fine but his OF has really been erratic. Its a heart attack salad out in RF right now. His D numbers this year are way down but I don't understand those ratings enough to know if its more than just his shoulder.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 you really think the jays are going to spend the 250+ mil to sign Heyward? Its not going to be near that amount

Yes let's throw the only true superstar in the last 30 years under the bus, you know the one guy who has been here through thick and thin That will make all the free agents want to sign her ASAP. How are you not an mlb GM

How are you not an mlb GM While HERPDERP can be a f***ing idiot online his idea of signing Hayward and moving Tista to 1B is excellent. Move Revere for a great reliever and have Pompey in LF and you actually have a plus defense OF heading forward for the first time in years.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 you really think the jays are going to spend the 250+ mil to sign Heyward? Probably not I guess. So getting Heyward may be a pipe dream depending how the industry values his youth, defense and all skills. He's not quite at the level of Cano when he signed the big deal... but he's 5 years younger. So if Cano's or Votto's age 30-40 seasons are worth 250 million or whatever. What are Heyward's 25-35 seasons worth?? What do you guys think??

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Its not going to be near that amount If not it says something about how the industry views D-WAR. Giancarlo Stanton born in '89 -- 700 games 25 WAR (apr.) 13 years 310 million Jayson Heyward born in '89 -- 800 games 28 WAR (apr) ?? million Stanton wasn't a free agent.
