I think most people believe that the Astros have a higher ceiling than the Royals. They haven't reached said ceiling just yet (on a consistent level)... But when they do, look out.

Good luck. From a pure drama standpoint, there couldn't have been a better matchup. I wouldn't be surprised if Donaldson gets hit with a pitch in his first trip to the plate... Just for old times sake.

This is true, to an extent. A lot are looking past Houston's late-season swoon though, which is more than reasonable. In a short series, it's tough to not be scared of the Astros -- their 8-game losing streak doesn't change that they have excellent pitching and a scary powerful lineup.

Yup plus Yost will over work them because he never lets his starters go deep in games. Partially because they can't but Houston is as free swinging as it gets. We are as patient as it gets. If there starters can't go deep against Houston outside of Cueto in game 5 they are going to have a lot of problems covering innings against us. We definitely have the advantage on the mound. I didn't really care who we played but I feel pretty good going into this series.

 

Sure is a refreshing change from the 2012-2014 teams isn't it? Rasmus, Lawrie, JPA, Rajai Davis, Izturis, Bonifacio... All those frustrating high K guys.

Not facing Kuechel twice in the series is the difference to me. Better to play the Royals, nobody on that pitching staff scares me (Cueto normally, but not lately).

These two teams meeting up is the proof (that we didn't really need) that manegerial strategy much like lineup order is just one of those things that generates a ton of debate but really doesn't matter that much in the end.

Royals won just 11 games in September and still won 95 games. The starting pitching numbers are bad (4.34 ERA, 4.32 FIP) but managed properly to max them out (Ventura and Medlen are 5 inning pitchers max) they are a dangerous lineup, they just don't scare as much as individuals.

To be fair, his options were limited when most of his rotation consisted of LHP against a power-hitting right-handed lineup. He could have used Gallardo in Game 5, but Cole Hamels could have won that game had his defense not played like little leaguers all of a sudden.

I thought Bannister made a mistake showing Diekman and Dyson to Toronto with his team down by so much in game 4. I know he wanted to give his best relievers work with the off day on Tuesday, but he just gave the Blue Jays another look and more information on his relief aces.

 

Dyson faced Revere-Donaldson-Bautista-Encarnacion in game 4 in the 8th inning, with his team down 8-2.

 

Then the very next game, those same Toronto hitters get the same pitcher. Same look.

 

It might have been the difference.

I think his big mistake was throwing Holland out there in game 4. I know that Holland is a decent pitcher when healthy but it wasn't a good matchup this year.

It was also clear very early that Toronto was right on Holland, and he had Colby Lewis and Gallardo that he could have gone to. But he left Holland in for another inning+ and he ended up giving up 6 runs.

In an oddity of dates, Game 1 between the Royals and Jays is the exact 30th anniversary of the deciding game 7 between the Royals and Jays in Toronto's first ALCS in 1985.

There's definitely not many better than him, if any. That fastball from Dyson wasn't really a bad pitch. It was at 97 mph and cutting in on his hands fast, but he was just ready for it and the bat speed did the rest.

At the moment I would think not in the AL though I'm still surprised how well Arod can hit a fastball at age 40.
