eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 These are insane numbers. Absolutely mind blowing. This has to be one of the highest watched Canadian program of alltime?
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 So according to Wiki... Keeps this in perspective. Still amazing numbers though. Canada[edit] The most watched television broadcast in Canadian history was the Gold medal game of the men's hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympics, played between the United States and Canada at General Motors Place (renamed "Canada Hockey Place" for the Olympics) in Vancouver. A confirmed 16.6 million Canadians watched the whole game, roughly one-half of the country's entire population.[35] A groundbreaking 26.5 million Canadians watched some part of the game, over 80 percent of the country's 34-million-person population.[36] According to multiple sources, 13.3 million Canadians watched the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, which was the previous record.[37] Many believed the final game of the 1972 Summit Series had up to 18 million viewers, but this was not so; only 4.3 million people watched it. 10.3 million people watched the ice hockey gold medal final of the 2002 Winter Olympics.[38]

Laika Community Moderator Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Imagine a game 7 of the World Series...
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 These are definitely the types of numbers that would motivate Rogers to open the chequebook during the offseason though. I can't even imagine how much more they're bringing in via ad revenue.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 That is a $160 million payroll territory right there.

And Dickey with an option.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 The payroll won't be much different. Is anyone factoring the Canadian dollar into this?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 A team that makes the playoffs yearly would bring the 4m fans a year at the dome. Nothing about these tv ratings surprise me. Its still impressive Ofcourse
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Anyone have US ratings for any of the series for comparison? They have 10x the population, but I bet the ratings won't reflect that.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 wow, those are great stats! .. too bad tomorrow's game isn't at 7
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 There were 4 Americans who watched the game. 3 of the 4 believe Canadians live in igloos, and the reason we can't catch...is because we have seal flippers for hands. (Of note though it explains why the cheering at the RC is so loud!)

The numbers up ere right now are amazing
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 "The Cubs/Cardinals game averaged 5,376,000 viewers, with a peak of seven million total from 9:00-9:15 PM. The Mets/Dodgers game averaged 4.7 million viewers, peaking at 5.1 million total from 10:30-10:45 p.m."
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Anyone have US ratings for any of the series for comparison? They have 10x the population, but I bet the ratings won't reflect that. The Blue Jays national TV market would be bigger than any other team's TV market, so the necessarily really fair comparison would be the nationally televised games, if you want to point to the US' entire population size. This Wiki article (link) has all the World Series ratings. In recent years your looking at 10-16 million average viewers per game, and over 20 million average if it's a game 7. So Canada seems more than twice as baseball hungry right now as the US in general. Another decent comp would be the wild card games, because they were nationally televised and the Yankees were in one of them. I found this: NEW YORK -- With the Yankees playing, baseball's wild-card game has drawn its largest television audience in its short history. The Houston Astros' 3-0 win over New York in the American League wild-card game Tuesday night on ESPN averaged more than 7.6 million viewers. The network said Wednesday that's up 36 percent from the 5.6 million for last year's National League game between the Giants and Pirates on ESPN, which was the previous high. It's up 46 percent from the 5.2 million for the 2014 AL game between small-market Kansas City and Oakland on TBS.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I think with baseball you get a lot of viewers that top watching when their team is out of it. It's not quite like football where people watch the Super Bowl no matter what.

That is incredible!

Purely a guess on my part, but I would suspect that the broadcast rights holder should receive a flat fee for the broadcast(likely very inflated for the post season) but all ad revenue on the sportsnet channel should remain with sportsnet since they are the channel that purchased the rights to the brodacst in Canada.
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Sportsnet broadcast deal is for Jays, all postseason, MLB network and MLB.tv. TSN has a national package of Sunday games and select midweek games. Basically, the higher the ratings, for the entire post season broadcasts in canada, jays and non jays games, means Sportsnet will have to cut its US partners a larger cheque once the longterm agreement they have expires and they renegotiate
