Praxis Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 We're done. Too many managerial mistakes, too many underperforming players and too many poor umpiring decisions coupled with some rotten luck and a few curses thrown in for good measure. I expect this team to go quietly into the night in game 3. Seeing Boyd, Hoffman, Norris etc. perform for other teams is going to hurt like hell next year. It already hurts to see Syndergaard begin his stellar career.
BlueJays Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 If we lose game 3, the management don't have to worry resting the players for clinching the AL East.

CHRIS Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I think a lot of people do need to chill. It's certainly disappointing to be down 0-2, no doubt, but it's not like this team isn't capable of winning 3 games in a row. I think to this point, Texas has just played better. Their bottom of the order has come through in situations where the meat of our order has not. Obviously that needs to change. A lot is being made of resting guys and letting Kansas City claim first spot overall. To be honest though, I think if the Jays are playing the same against the Astros, we're probably still down 0-2. Cecil's injury, and to a lesser extent Donaldson's near concussion issue, are good examples of the risk that can occur when you have guys take the field. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to presume that had these scenarios unfolded at the end of the regular season, Gibbons and this organization would have been lambasted by many for "not looking at the bigger picture" by not keeping guys healthy for the postseason.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I don't know why I'm such a Jays homer, but I feel like game 5 is a lock.
intrigid Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 This is the one way that this can work out. Blue Jays team sleeps off the loss and wakes up resigned to their fate. They get a full day and a half to detense and think about what could have been. Come Sunday night, with the grieving phase over, and all expectation of success long forgotten, and nobody able to be the hero any longer, they focus on the one and only thing they can to finish the season. And that is to get one last quality AB in, one last quality inning, in other words play the way they needed to play but couldn't in game 2. With the pressure completely off and the team fully expecting to go home Sunday night, they string together a series of quality ABs. Suddenly a big inning comes out of nowhere, and the Blue Jays not expecting this at all, realize they might get to play a 4th game after all. And just like that, every player on the team feels like a pimp, and if nothing else, feels that this game is theirs. Then with Price in game 4 and Stroman in game 5, the story pretty much writes itself from that point. Really when you think about it, winning the next game pretty much guarantees them a WS win.
leaffie Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 You are always an optimist that supports the Jays Spanky. Good for you. This is not criticizing anyone, but really think about where this team is. Started off the spring complaining about the Synder trade, endlessly. Then Stroman gets hurt and the world is ending. Hate Buehrle and Dickey. No hope. Fire Gibbons and AA. The Jays struggle along, and even after an 11 game winning streak, woe is me, there is no hope for this team. Hate the Jays, hate AA and Fire Gibbons. Then the trade deadline, and all the bipolars, all of a sudden love the team and are thrilled that they might make the WC. Next it is wow, what a team, praise AA and still want to fire Gibbons, forgetting that it was AA that hired him. Then they win the division, and wow look at that AA, what a job. Of course, now they have struggled in the playoffs, which is not unheard of, especially for a team playing in them for the first time. And it is back to no hope, the season is lost. Some of you are missing the enjoyment of your team making the playoffs, after all this time. You are overlooking the fact that obviously Rogers has stepped up and has decided that they want a team that wins. The team has played scared in my opinion. That doesn't make them a bad team. But even if they don't win another game, this will have been an exciting season, with lots of promise going forward. Jays fans should be enjoying every minute!!!

I do wonder if they'll go this route with the rotation, and even if they decide to stick with Dickey, if they'll utilize Price/Stro more flexibly over the possible final two games (one of them off the bullpen perhaps?).

Price has been bad against the Rangers in his career. He's been bad in the playoffs in his career. Sure, that's bound to turn around, but on 3 days rest? I'm not sure I'd risk it. Dickey has been brilliant the 2nd half of the season. I'd start Dickey in game 4, with Price ready to come in at the first sign of trouble. If Dickey can get us the win, we can start Price or Stroman in game 5, and the other starts game 1 of the ALCS Jays in 5. Jays to the WS. LETS DO THIS

I'm still pretty dubious about Rogers being wiling to take payroll to another level. Hidden beneath the feel-good deadline additions were Revere's salary being covered by Philadelphia and Valencia and his salary being shown the door. I think it will be surprising if they're above ~130 next year. Watching them maneuver this will be the most interesting thing to follow over the next 15-16 months.

Skip him in game 5 as well? You can say what you want about his stats, but if you're going to put him in game 5 then you might as well put him in game 4.

LETS DO THIS Thing is that his last two starts vs. the Rangers in Arlington has been wins. Had that win on his birthday this year (which was so-so but still had 8 strikeouts in 5 innings) and the one previous was that crucial play-in game win in 2013, which for some reason seems often forgotten about; that was basically a huge WC game-like situation. On paper that was a regular season game but in reality was a post season game IMO. I do like the suggested possibility of Price possibly coming off the pen after Dickey though, that could sort of offset the absence of Cecil in the pen.

You live and die with the ace we rented for game 4 over RA with props to him for his 2.1 WAR and the 2nd half he had.

You go with the hot hand, not the guy who deserves or is owed ior was aquired for a reason. Best arm avail is the way to go, thats how you win championships. You cant bput your faith blindly on one guy, every move could be your last of the aseason. Bannisters decisions have been number and situation based and consistant.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I'm excited for the future of this team even if Rogers doesn't increase payroll. They have Mark Shapiro coming in which apparently everyone on this board likes so that's reassuring. If they make some shrewd moves this offseason they can still have a chance to come back a powerhouse next year even without Price. Right now though, I want to die.

You live and die with the ace we rented for game 4 over RA with props to him for his 2.1 WAR and the 2nd half he had. The team needs to put their nerds to work here. The considerations would be something like: Dickey expected ERA = 3.9ish? + Dickey effect for bullpen and Price (but weakened for Price because of the day off) Price expected ERA = 3.2ish + some kind of signficant penalty for going on three days rest And it's not just Dickey vs. Price. You have to consider that rested Price + Dickey effect is better than rested Stroman with no Dickey effect in game 5.

It gets interesting after next season. Martin, Tulo, and Donaldson will cost $60M. Edwin and Jose will be looking at 20M+ each. So if the team wants to keep that core together they're looking at 100M for 5 players in 2017.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 We should really just enjoy every playoff game we get to watch. It's so much different than the regular season in terms of every pitch being a must watch. There's no point being mad at anyone but the terrible ump yesterday. Hockey is a different story because of the obvious stupid an annoying mistakes the Leafs make on a nightly basis (looking at you Jake Gardiner). Baseball is a lot more random and difficult.

Hopefully with Shapiro, AA won't make the mistake of going for it too early like in the offseason of 2012. Don't know if Rogers will approve of that if they're coming off possibly two straight playoff appearances though.
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I agree Bannisters moves have looked good luck or skill or both. Unlike us leaving Goins in to hit in 2 key situations he had Napoli hit for Moreland against Cecil. His hit and runs worked out. But I don't discount Price's body of work based on his last 2 starts. Price > RA. Period. Give him the ball. Totally agree, was stunned Navarro wasnt at the plate for Goins, but roght now Stroman is the best arm avail. If you burn him out to win the alds, so be it. It win time baby

One of Edwin/Jose has to go after 2016, we just don't have the money. Edwin will probably be let go and Jose will probably stay with the Jays for a few more years on 1-2 year contracts kinda like Ortiz and the sox. We may also have to get rid of one of Tulo/Donaldson/Martin by 2017/2018. Even with a core offense of say Bautista/Donaldson/Tulo/Travis, along with new additions/rookies, we can be competitive.
