I recall him talking about his ring, but I couldn't point to a specific interview. It's the custom these days to give a ring to every player that contributed (like Teoscar Hernandez) but I'm not sure if that was always the case.

Colby Rasmus got a world series ring when he was with us when the Cards won after trading him mid season

25 years ago don't know if they would have done that for a guy who had 2 PA at age 21. Must have been pinch hit appearances during Sept call-ups or something.

Man, not bad for not signing EE to a $100M deal. :)

Okay, Pearson is good a baseball. He's 22, has two plus pitches, working on a 3rd, etc. Should he be considered for a starting role in 2019, say after May 1st (service time consideration), or should he stick in the minors another year and a few weeks?

Option two. He hasn't pitched a full year yet.

No. He's lost too much development time to be ready for 2019, shouldn't even be on the radar, even if he kills it in spring training. I'd say the earliest we possibly see him (and only if he has a crazy good year and hits at LEAST AA) would be September, and I'd say the odds of that are pretty slim. Lots of talent, lots to be excited about, but it would be pretty insane to expect him to be on the MLB roster next season.

Pearson will be monitored very closely in 2019 due to missing practically all of 2018. I think earliest for him is mid-2020, best case.

If he's a reliever, then obviously all bets are off, but no way Shatkins turns him into one this soon.

I like the ring of Danny Jansen: franchise catcher. We've probably taken consistency at the C position for granted with Martin here the last 4 years, but that's so huge for a pitching staff.

8. Luis Medina, RHP

Age: 19 (5/3/99)

Level: Adv. Rookie

36 IP, 6.25 ERA, 6.46 FIP, 11.75 K/9, 11.5 BB/9, .235 AVG

Medina has been plagued by command issues his entire career which may shed some doubt on his future role and makes him a risky prospect. However, if he can improve to 45-50 command, we are talking about one of the best, if not the best, starting pitching prospect in baseball. His fastball sits 98-99 with run and sink. His curve is a 12-6 beast of a pitch that plays up due to a 15-mph difference in velocity. His change-up is 91 and is firm but with two electric 70-80 grade pitches, Medina just needs to maintain fastball arm speed and locate for the changeup to play up to average. In a two inning start in Instructs, Medina walked two. The control was good and the walks came from overthrowing his fastball with two strikes. At only 19, Medina is crazy athletic with a fluid delivery. There is plenty of time for him to harness his stuff and when he does….watch out. ETA: 2022

Yeah, all he needs to do is reduce his walk rate by like 80%, nbd.

If I keep him through the cut every year and he turns into a good pitcher, I will kiss you irl.

I find it weird that fans would/have taken it for granted. I mean, we had Navarro, Thole, JPA before Martin took over. Those were dark times.

Anyone ever been to the AFL?

Im thinking of going later this month for 4-5 days, just wondering for things to do besides baseball and the grand canyon.

Franchise catcher? Oh f*** yar.

"extension" has to be the worst hitting scouting term

The long string of sub par catchers before Martin is not easily forgotten

Is Cavan Biggio going to be the next young Ben Zobrist? Excelling at various positions, dangerous at the plate and a winner, key cog in playoff teams? Edited by Carlos Danger

Ben Zobrist is 7th in position player fWAR since 2009. I'm going with no.

Ok, fair enough. I think he can be a similar type player. However, I am an optimist on some things.

Who is your comparison for Biggio’s ceiling, just out of curiosity?

Thanks

If the Jays are somehow in contention and If he performs like we think he can he will be up next year. "Starters" as we know them are ending.... innings limitis will end with it. In that, almost nobody except the very elite will throw 200 innings.

Pearson coming up in the second half of 2019 and pitching as an occasional opener and some middle relief after the opener shouldn't surprise anyone.

Not too sure. He has a wide range of outcomes and it's pretty hard to predict.

Well the ceiling could certainly be someone like Zobrist, but it's highly unlikely he actually reaches it. Someone like a Danny Espinosa is probably a realistic outcome, but of course we can hope for better.

I went with Steve Pearce for a high end comp

Pearce doesn't have the power or SB ability, and he makes a lot more contact. They really don't seem similar at all to me.

Derek Dietrich had kind of comparable numbers as Biggio at AA in 2013. Both LHH

He's got a weird profile for a MIF prospect unless he can actually play the OF at a respectable level. Depending on the power he could have Kyle Schwarber or Justin Smoak type offense with Michael Young-like positional versatility (can play a few different positions but none very well). Maybe prime Rickie Weeks if everything goes well.

Dietrich's walk rate that season seems like an outlier in a smaller sample though, he'd never walked that much before and never has come close since.

Biggios walk rate in 2018 could very well be an outlier too. I doubt he'll repeat 17% again. Probably fall back down to the 10-13 range. Then again his entire profile changed as a hitter too so who knows

Buffalo has been a bit of a graveyard for hitters like Tellez, Pompey, etc. so it'll be interesting to see what he does there.

Hurls previous comp for him was Ryan Schimpf, but no one is going to like that outcome

I would say Espinosa at the lower end and Kelly Johnson at the mid range are realistic comps. Not sure for realistic upper range, but Rickie Weeks seems like as good a suggestion as anyone else. Hopefully he'll take another big step forward and blow those out of the water, but even if he doesn't he still likely helps our big league team.

I agree with that, I don't think we should be expecting him to provide Joey Votto or Bryce Harper-esque walk rates going forward, but unlike Dietrich it seems Biggio's profile is centered around walks as evidenced by his whole minor league career.

Schimpf is honestly not a bad comp, except that he went too extreme for his own good, literally all or nothing with him.

I like the Kelly Johnson comp but not the Espinosa one, the former can be compared in pretty much every tool to Biggio but the latter didn't walk at an above average rate and was valuable due to his excellent defense at a premium position.

Yeah, I was looking more at offensive profile admittedly for his first two full seasons. That seems like a fairly realistic lower end offensive comp to me though. You're right, he likely won't provide above average defense.
