Guys playing in the AFL, no announcements on the DWL, but that doesn't happen till late fall, a lot of guys that will be overseas...

Tiedemann is a huge name for the AFL. Don't normally see SP prospects ranked as highly as him head out there. But he needs innings.

Tiedemann is supposed to go up to 80 pitches in his AAA debut this weekend. Wonder if that means he will also stay stretched out for his AFL stint.

 

For sure, at least around that number as they'll want him on a full schedule next season.

I don't know if we've talked about this yet, but word has circulated the past day or so about the Jays signing Venezuelan SS Kennew Blanco in the January IFA window. There was apparently some confusion as to whether he was a 2024 or 2025 guy, but it looks like he's been confirmed for 2024.

 

Kiley McDaniel named his as one of the Top 3 IFA kids and among the best 2007 DOB players identified in this article from May.

 

MLB Pipeline just released a scouting video two days ago:

MLB Pipeline just released their 2024 Top 50 IFA list.

 

Kennew Blanco ranks at #9 overall and is now listed as 6'2 160 pounds.

longest outing of his season

 

twitter scouts say he was touching 96 and throwing lots of sweepers

 

he faced at least two elite hitting prospects I can see in Chase DeLauter and Kyle Manzardo.

If Tiedemann can somehow f***ing stay healthy he could and should make the team next year.

 

I don't know what they would do with his innings but that's just a maybe problem you figure out if it ever happens.

Talent wise... maybe but he'd have to get to near 100 inning this season if they truly thought he could pitch in the rotation next season no? Even with a few more starts in the AFL he'll be lucky to top 70.

 

I suppose it would be doable with a dedicated piggyback kind of situation but next season his max would be 100-110 at the upper limit.

I dunno, maybe 120 or 130. But so what if he gets there and they decide to shut him down? Use the bullets in MLB. His stuff is MLB ready.

Id still like to see the walks get under more control. 5.6 BB/9 at AA this season. I have some doubts that he would survive at the MLB level right away. Stuff is nasty no doubt but the control of that stuff is not there yet IMO

Sure hope he doesn't turn into a left handed Pearson because of control issues.

 

He hasn't been a poster boy of health either.

His Location+ was actually above average in A ball

 

I think his stuff is just too fancy for MiLB umpires

That could be. Ive only seen him throw once so I can't match up the eye test with the data yet

It's worth noting as well that the AFL presently has a higher run scoring number than AAA did I think the average ERA is something like 5.6

A lot of you know more about our minor league system than I do so what is the final verdict on the MILB system for 2023?

 

Top 15

-Tiedeman and Orelvis both took steps closer to the big leagues and I think that helps a lot.

-Leo Jimenez advanced to AAA and Kasevich seemed to maintain his status.

-But a lot of Top 15 guys spun their wheels (Barger, Barriera) or were just plain bad (Otto Lopez, Zululeta, Macko, Gabby Martinez).

 

16-30 or lower

-We saw some strides with lower ranked guys especially. Schneider, Francis and Horwitz look like big league contributors. Alan Roden took a huge jump from a nobody to a legit prospect. Palmegiani made a leap too.

-It also seems like our pitching took a system wide leap with a bunch of pitchers becoming "guys". Though we traded a couple of them for Jordan Hicks.

 

So all that said what was the end result for the year? Good, bad, mediocre? Seems like it was kind of good?

Better than average.

 

A little tidbit from BA:

 

Among the relievers on this list are some of the top names in the minor leagues. Connor Cooke was a revelation for the Blue Jays this summer, as he pitched his way to Triple-A by season’s end with a robust three-pitch mix.

Remove Macko from the bad group. His last 8 starts including the playoffs were really good. And he stayed healthy all season.

 

Yeah but he ended the year in A+ again. I guess it wasn't a disaster but it wasn't great. Probably just kind of spun his tires more than it being bad.

The Jays had a lot of down-list players make huge strides.

 

I would say the system developed well this year. It will be underrated on off-season rankings
