Damn yeah, Orelvis is really turning the corner.

 

His numbers looked alarming at the end of April but now they look okay. Soon the K rate will be below 30%. Patience should show up too....

 

Dude had no idea in April and was just hackkkking. One walk the entire month. Three so far in May. And 10 Ks in 11 games is alright.

I saw in the latest Eric longenhagen chat that some scout texted him that Martinez reminded him of Maikel Franco.

 

I think he has absolute bust potential (some guys never recognize breaking balls) but oh my god the ceiling is immense. He’s our best dice roll for a true star I think to complement this core.

I saw the Maikel comp, its a lazy comp to make after a month in AA.

 

If Orelvis is making an adjustment to upper level pitching at 20 yrs old, this bodes well for him to be a big club contributor within a year or two.

From a stats-scouting perspective it isn't really a match. Franco didn't have strike-out issues but outside of his age 20 season didn't have great minor league stats either. Franco was a .277 .327 .450 minor league hitter and a .247 .299 .420 MLB hitter, those two lines match up pretty well.

 

Would be interesting to compare him to similar minor league power hitters. Hard to find them though... not a lot of guys have had this kind of homerun rate age 18-20. Even Guerrero had like only half of Martinez's homerun rate.

What's the deal with Vladdy's two 15 year old brothers?

 

When can they be signed by a MLB team? Or is MLB still looking to implement an international draft?

Unlikley to sign with the Jays at the moment unless for a discount/delayed signing. Both can sign this coming period and the Jays have 4M earmarked for Bonilla

This was in the CBA about the IFA's moving forward, I believe we'll be seeing an IFA draft as soon as next year...

• In exchange for agreeing to an International Draft by July 25, 2022, MLB will eliminate the qualifying offer system (direct Draft-pick compensation) for free agents.

 

• International Draft would be 20 rounds (600-plus selections), increasing the total compensation earned by amateurs by more than $20 million annually.

 

• Signing bonuses would be guaranteed for drafted players.

 

• Clubs who select players from growth countries (countries with less than 0.5% of signings in the previous three signing periods) will receive additional selections to incentivize scouting and signing in emerging markets.

It’s part of a scout’s job to make comps based on the tools, strengths and weaknesses they see.

 

However, this did seem to be kind of a throwaway line, to me.

No, they moved the IFA deadline to July annually, and in '23 we'll most likely see an IFA draft, the year they'll be eligible. We'd have heard a lot of noise on them being eligible this upcoming year, IIRC.

This has ROOGY written all over it. Make him focus on harnessing the slider and fastball on 2 inning stints and turn him into 2021 Ryan Thompson by the end of the year.

Feels like there is lots of room for adjustment here... if his 60 homerun a year approach doesn't work because he would strike out 250 times against good pitching he might be able to tone it down a bit and be a successful 30 homerun a year guy.

Not saying at all he should change, can't wait to see the 60 homerun approach... just saying if by some chance it doesn't quite work there is room to trade off a bit of power for contact.

Would you rather have a player that puts up a 74 HR season with a .225/.280 (Average/OBP) or have a player put up 50 HR with a .300/.400? On one hand you have the excitement of a player breaking the HR record, but on the other you have a player that puts up an amazing year with the bat and would no doubt produce a higher WAR and be more valuable to the team. This hypothetical player is a career org guy, that puts up a 1 year wonder type thing, after his amazing year he's back to his AAAA type ways.

Orelvis. Such a unique guy. Like he just tied Bo Bichette's age 20 New hampshire home run total of 11... took Bo 131 games, but Orelvis only 29.

 

And Bo swings hard and wild with good exit-V sometimes.. what the hell will Orelvis be like when he gets here?

Orelvis has to be a top 5 power prospect in baseball now, right?

The 60 raw power grades must be underrating the pop. Or he's more swole now than he was previously.

Biggest thing to me with Orlevis is that this is now the 3rd time he has already shown the ability to handle failure. He got off to a decent start in Dunedin last year, K'd alot, made adjustments and started mashing, moves up to Vancouver and does the same thing albeit we didn't get to see him there for very long. And now this year after a very aggressive promotion to AA he shows off his power early, gets exposed a bit by the better pitching, realizes what he's doing wrong, corrects it and now is mashing again. That to me shows that yes he might struggle at first when he comes up to MLB but he's got the makeup to handle the failure and learn quickly from it.

Orelvis always gave Miguel Sano vibes to me (offensively, not necessarily body wise). Sano also was on a 50-something homer pace as a 20-year-old in AA, but also demonstrated more of an ability to walk. I actually think Orelvis may have more potential power than Sano though, which is absurd to think about. Teoscar with a tick more power might be a good comp actually?

 

With Orelvis, I haven't seen many prospects so effortlessly crush fastballs before. I've been watching his PA's even during his hot streak in May, and he still whiffs pretty badly on good breaking stuff. His ugly stretches are going to be ugly.
