gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2021 Posted June 18, 2021 Moreno is destroying AA at 21 years old. I know RBIs don't really indicate much but 35 RBIs in 27 games played is crazy.

Good thing we didn't Prospects will break your heart. Happens all too often that a team thinks they're set at a position and makes a trade they regret down the road. Jays thought they had their catching of the future locked down with Arencibia, d'Arnaud, etc and threw away Yan Gomes, who wound up with more career WAR than all of them.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 18, 2021 Posted June 18, 2021 every trade deadline people say the Dodgers have to trade from their catching wealth. I just follow everything the Dodgers do

The Gomes trade definitely did not break my heart. Now if I was a White Sox fan......

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2021 Posted June 18, 2021 The Gomes trade definitely did not break my heart. Now if I was a White Sox fan...... "Prospects will break your heart" is in reference to the prospects you keep that end up being total ass. Like JP Arencibia. Being strong at a position when it comes to prospects doesn't mean anything. Most of them will bust and you could end up trading the one that doesn't.

JP Arencibia likely gets evaluated more properly under a more modern system of evaluation. He didn't fail because "oH No CaTchER pRosPEcT", he failed because the holes were obviously there the entire time. In a more modern model-driven system, who gets "hyped" for a guy who never walks, strikes out a lot, and has inflated numbers from playing in one of the most extreme hitting environments on the planet? Not only was he never anything special behind the plate, but he would have failed regardless of what position he played. The best teams today are all also extremely good at evaluating their own prospects. They trade very few guys who become superstars elsewhere, and they don't miss on evaluating which guys to keep very often either. Travis d'Arnaud was actually pretty legitimate, he just ended up getting hurt every year.

Gomes numbers were in fact better than Arencibia's in the minors but no one noticed. On the point that very few traded prospects become superstars elsewhere? I don't know. There has been a few develop that way in the last couple of years. Fernando Tatis was traded, Gleyborre Torres was traded, Tyler Glasnow traded. Yoan Moncada traded, Eloy Jiminez too. All super stars or close.
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 Teams / people in the industry are a lot better at evaluating prospects now though. If you look at top 100 lists from this decade there typically aren't many complete busts in, say, the top 25. Outside of the top 50 is when you start to see the bust rate take off but you'll still see a decent amount of future stars in the 50-100 range. But the vast majority of prospects on your favourite team's top prospects list will break your heart.

Anyone know if he's doing this on pure pitch-ability or if he has legit stuff too? Any plus pitches?

And the Jays guys who were saying JPA is not the guy to anoint an everyday starter were running media articles from players youth.

InvincibleTiger Verified Member Posted June 20, 2021 Posted June 20, 2021 No, way too rich Why too rich?
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 20, 2021 Posted June 20, 2021 Why too rich? Moreno's reasonable future value is not "best catcher in baseball". Think something more like, I dunno, Wilson Contreras.
King Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2021 Posted June 20, 2021 Is there any way to watch the Fisher Cats game without MiLB TV? My recommendation is to either a) Buy MiLB.TV yourself (it's like $40 or something for the whole season - I think you can also buy individual games) or Find someone who can share an account with you. Certainly someone on the Blue Jays subreddit has an account they would be willing to share
Benito Verified Member Posted June 20, 2021 Posted June 20, 2021 Moreno's reasonable future value is not "best catcher in baseball". Think something more like, I dunno, Wilson Contreras. Yeah, I was probably too optimistic. 2-3 war is probably more realistic to hope for. One can still dream.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2021 Posted June 20, 2021 (edited) Fisher Cats pummeling Hartford today, 14-2 in the 8th inning. Austin Martin has had a huge day. 5-for-6 with three singles and two doubles (one was a ground-rule double). 2 runs, 4 RBIs and his average is now up to .287. Samad Taylor had another big day as well. 4-for-5 with two doubles, a bunt single and a walk. 3 runs, 4 RBIs, average up to .324. Otto Lopez continues to be on fire. 3-for-5 with two singles, a double and a walk. His lone out was a GIDP. Drove in 2 runs and average is up to .352. Moreno hit a bomb early and added a double later. 2-for-5, 3 RBIs, average up to .375. New Hampshire is also getting a lot of production from Vinny Capra. About to be 25 years old so there probably isn't much to see there but he's 5-for-6 today, is hitting .396 on the season and had a 182 wRC+ going into today. Has never hit nearly this well before. Edited the above list with end-of-game results since Capra, Taylor and Martin had another at-bat after I started writing. Edited June 20, 2021 by TwistedLogic
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2021 Posted June 20, 2021 lol wow, Samad and Martin actually got another at-bat as a result of three straight hits from 7-8-9 guys Talley, Capra and Pruitt. Samad just drove another single so he's now 4-for-5. Martin at the plate with the bases loaded and one out. Dang, Martin struck out. Likely done for the day at 5-for-6. Lopez at the plate now with the bases still loaded. Lopez grounds out. Cats done for the day with the top of the 9th coming up.

Josh Kasevich Buffalo Bisons - AAA SS Kasevich tallied 3 hits on Thursday including his 17th double. He's now hitting .303 on the season. Explore Josh Kasevich News >
