G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 11, 2018 Posted October 11, 2018 Any news anywhere regarding Vlad's play in the field? No idea Bbref shows 12 errors in 81 games this year but that's not very meaningful. Same goes for the . 945 fielding percentage.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 What an absurd hitting prospect. Wonder if he'll end up a better hitter than his dad when all is said and done. Doesn't really seem that far fetched tbh.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 that seems like an extraordinarily poor use of love. Sorry I hurt your feelings. Mahbe we can trade Biggio for nothing and then raise money to pay him 16 million dollars for some reason.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 Yeah, Shatkins has to make sure we don't "Mike Trout" Vlad's time here. Make sure this team is ready to contend by 2020. I want to see six competitive years with that beast in the lineup.

I want to see six competitive years with that beast in the lineup. This brings up an interesting point. What kind of ceiling do you guys see from Vlad? Personally, I think there's a strong chance he becomes a great hitter...but let's not kid ourselves - given his size, his BsR and fielding value are going to restrict his value. I don't think we're looking at a guy who's going to give us 8+ WAR per year. I'd imagine at his peak, we're looking at low 7 WAR (Votto & Goldy - 2015) or like JD Martinez this year (5.9 WAR). Boston had Betts (10.4), Bogarts (4.9) and Benny (4.3), combined with Martinez to give them a great team/offense. We're going to need a few more out of the Bo, Alford, Biggio, Jansen, Groshans, Smith group to join Vlad as star players if we're going to create that young core that can sustain winning over multiple years....

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 12, 2018 Posted October 12, 2018 I believe Carlos Delgado has a Blue Jays World Series ring. Had to look He had two major league plate appearances in 1993, was not on the post season roster. He got a ring anyway? To my point though he never appeared in the playoffs as a Blue Jay. Trout appeared as an Angel. For one series. Still sad for sure.

I don’t think they necessarily need another 5+ win guy to compete. It’s amazing what can be accomplished by not giving playing to terrible players.

It won't make you a superteam like the Astros, but it'll get you to the playoffs, and that's all you really need. In terms of Vlads ceiling, I think we're looking at a Manny Ramirez type career. .300 BA, .400 OBP and 25-40 HR. 4-5 WAR regular with an 7-8 WAR peak.

Matt Chapman is a genuine superstar and he was surrounded by a lot of really good players but not another star, sure Jed Lowrie was nearly a 5 win player but in a contending year the odds are high that some other players would have complimented your best with a great year.

But to be a sustained winner - we're going to either need 2 or 3 other prospects to be star players...or we'll need 4 or 5 of them to be above average guys (like Oakland has in Lowrie, Semien, Olsen, Piscotty, Davis, Canha, etc.)

Oakland doesn't have that luxury.

I recall him talking about his ring, but I couldn't point to a specific interview. It's the custom these days to give a ring to every player that contributed (like Teoscar Hernandez) but I'm not sure if that was always the case.

He's 22, has two plus pitches, working on a 3rd, etc. Should he be considered for a starting role in 2019, say after May 1st (service time consideration), or should he stick in the minors another year and a few weeks?
