Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 I've advocated playing Smoak more during the season, but seeing how he's failed against the breaking ball in full time duty lately I'd like to see Cola given a chance for a stretch. Cola has decent 1B defence and Smoak hasn't played a clean 1B lately either
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Author Posted September 25, 2015 could someone with a higher knowledge level than me start a poll on this thread to see what everyone thinks?? edit - thanks!

CHRIS Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 I picked Smoak, despite his struggles hitting the breaking ball. I know he's had a couple of defensive hiccoughs lately, but I still trust his D over Cola's. I don't think he needs to hit 5th though, especially with Martin in the lineup.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 I think it's awesome that our team is so good that this is pretty much the only thing people have to fret about.
rydermike Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 I say Colabello to start and then replace him with Smoak in the 7th/8th for defensive reasons
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 (edited) Cola isnt getting enough PH abs...love him at first, but if Smoak is going to play, Martin should be hitting 5th, but i see him protecting Smoak somewhat in the 6 spot. Smoak has been a one rally killer for the most part last week or so. Golden sombrero the other night turned out to be a blessing as it gave Martin a chance instead of hitting into DP. These are great problems to have, could be much much worse Bello vs Smoak is 6 of one, half dozen of the other argument. Edited September 25, 2015 by 500LevelSTH

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 What are Smoak's L/R splits like?
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Smoak gives you a better chance to win. /thread
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Smoak: 305 PA, 32 XBH, 53 RBI, 28 BB, 83K Colabello: 336 PA, 32 XBH, 53 RBI, 22 BB, 88K If you take away the fact that Colabello has had a bunch more ground balls find holes for singles, the production between the two is essentially the same. Go with the guy with better defense.
polar bear Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Valencia would have been my choice, but superior minds prevail I guess.

BlueJays Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Sweet. No Mr. Strikeout tonight.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Sweet. No Mr. Strikeout tonight. Yea replacing his bat with one of Barney / Pennington is maybe not so sweet.
BlueBirdBro Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Can we stop with the BABIP is not sustainable argument for the rest of this season with Cola? We've been saying that for months.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 I like both of them for different reasons. I think they make a pretty good platoon. That platoon image is awesome
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 I say Colabello to start and then replace him with Smoak in the 7th/8th for defensive reasons this. every game should be this.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Sweet. No Mr. Strikeout tonight. Yea replacing his bat with one of Barney / Pennington is maybe not so sweet. Amen Gov. That is a nasty bottom 4. I don't think get this at all. At least with Cola or Smoak there is a better chance of some upside at the plate. To give JD a day off in the field a day after a non travel off day? Must be something we aren't being told.

Go with the guy with better defense. Thats a broad way of looking at it, Cola is much better at squaring up the ball whereas Smoak is all heavy swing. When he does hit it, it gets destroyed as evident by more than half his hits going for extra bases. Cola may strike out at the same rate, but its not because he cant hit a breaking ball. Cola can also spray the ball all over the field, whereas Smoak is pull heavy and defenses load up on him. Its not all BABIP "luck" as a lot of the stat head only guys like to think. In the playoffs any decent manager will pick up on Smoaks inability to hit the breaking ball, and he will rarely see a fastball. Him hitting 5th in the postseason is a mistake IMO.(if Tulo is still on the mend) Cola's defense at first has been more than adequate this year and the difference between the two isnt as big as some would like to think. (-5DRS : 3DRS) (-1.0 UZR : 1.2 UZR) All year the same tune has sung about Cola not being able to sustain his bat, yet he somehow has. Going forward the same thinking of him not sustaining it is probably true, but why not see if he can continue to buck the trend. At the beginning of the year I was all for Smoak getting more playing time, but right now I'd much rather see Cola in there with Tulo still out. Once Tulo is back I'd probably roll with Smoak
Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Use Smoak, but drop him in the lineup. No way he should hit 5th if the pitcher has a good CB.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted September 25, 2015 Posted September 25, 2015 Ill take platoon... but all things being equal, cola
Mac Outlaw Verified Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 I've been pushing for more Colabello all year. I ain't stopping now. Give me the guy with the OPS. Give me the guy with the PRODUCKSHUN
BlueJays Verified Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 lol. Smoak batting 5th again.

Yorkshire Blue Jay Verified Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 The last time we faced Archer we got 2 runs off him in 7 innings..... courtesy of a 2 run HR from Colabello but he rides the pine today.
