Replace him with Pompey and it looks pretty good. Maybe Loup for Estrada/Buehrle to give you that 2nd lefty in the pen.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Revere Pillar Bautista Pompey Tulo Goins Pennington Donaldson Edwin Colabello Smoak Martin Navarro Price Stroman Dickey Estrada (pen?) Buehrle (pen?) _ Osuna Sanchez Hendriks Hawkins Lowe Cecil Loup

Buehrle (pen?) _ Osuna Sanchez Hendriks Hawkins Lowe Cecil Loup Lol at Loup making it, you think Gibby is gonna use Loup?
Sorrow Verified Member Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 I'd generally agree but AA and Gibbons seem to have weird roster management calls and I assume they'll bring Schultz because of that. I mean Pompey hasn't had a game since he was recalled. If they had any intent on using him in the playoffs he'd be playing now.

vdubmvp Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Well, it sure as f*** won't include Pompey.
EMK19 Verified Member Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Lol at Loup making it, you think Gibby is gonna use Loup? I do wonder if Gibby would be confident enough to go into the postseason with only one lefty middle reliever. Even if Buehrle gets put in the pen it's definitely a role he's not used to and you have to wonder how effective he would be there. On the other hand, Gibbons hasn't used Loup in too many high leverage spots lately and it's clear that Gibby's had a huge drop of confidence in him (understandably). Although we actually had only one lefty reliever in the pen in 1992 (Wells, though Key was used as a reliever a bit in ALCS) and won the whole thing so perhaps it wouldn't matter as long as we have some rock solid guys going in and starters do a good enough job going deep.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Revere Pillar Bautista Pompey Tulo Goins Pennington Donaldson Edwin Colabello Smoak Martin Navarro Price Stroman Dickey Estrada (pen?) Buehrle (pen?) _ Osuna Sanchez Hendriks Hawkins Lowe Cecil Loup Zero reason to have 8 bullpen pitchers. I'm also not so sure what the point of having Buehrle in the pen would be as he really doesn't have any value coming in for an inning or 2.

I'm also not so sure what the point of having Buehrle in the pen would be as he really doesn't have any value coming in for an inning or 2. For ALDS at least it's possible that Buehrle won't get put in the rotation with only three guys needed so maybe that's what he meant (though that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll come out from the pen to pitch either). and yeah, 8 bullpen pitchers won't happen as we will already have at least one of Stro/Estrada/Buehrle in the pen. Plus we won't be able to afford shallow bench depth especially with Tulo's health uncertain.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Buerhle for the 15-18 inning marathon game after our 1 inning relievers are used up.
nextyear Verified Member Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) Unfortunately, reading through the following story, Tulowitzki's return prior to the start of the playoffs sounds very unlikely - http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-tulowitzki-i-feel-like-im-making-strides/ . Tulowitzki gives a great interview and really sounds like a good guy, in addition to being an excellent player so this is very disappointing. As far as the infield goes, it looks pretty certain that it will be: Kawasaki Goins Pennington Donaldson Edwin (probably DH in the AL playoffs, with Smoak playing most games at 1B) Colabello Smoak Martin Navarro Carrera Revere Pillar Bautista Price Stroman Dickey Estrada (SP/bullpen) Buehrle (SP/bullpen - because he is a left-hander and can either start or pitch out of the bullpen. I can't see them excluding Buehrle because of his leadership and contributions this year, even if he just pitches out of the BP) Osuna Sanchez Hendriks Hawkins Lowe Cecil Hutchison (it might be Loup instead since he is a left-hander but I hope not, Buehrle is also a left-hander who could pitch out of the bullpen so they might not need Loup) Edited September 20, 2015 by nextyear

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Carrera should not be on the post season roster, but Gibbons likes him anyway so he'll get a spot.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Why do we have to stuff unneeded starting pitchers in the pen at all? You set your 25 man roster per series not prior to the postseason. In the ALDS there would be zero reason not to have Pompey on the bench as a late inning sub.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Although we actually had only one lefty reliever in the pen in 1992 (Wells, though Key was used as a reliever a bit in ALCS) and won the whole thing so perhaps it wouldn't matter as long as we have some rock solid guys going in and starters do a good enough job going deep. It really didn't matter in 1992 because Cito didn't play lefty-righty matchups at all. He believed in set roles as much or more than Gibbons does.

Agreed They're essentially using him as a pinch runner only and clearly have no intention of doing otherwise until maybe they clinch You can't waste a 25 man playoff roster spot for that so he won't make it
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Who do you guys think start game 1 and game 2 in the divisional series? Price and Stroman? Yes and yes as long as Stroman continues to look good
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 I'd take both Carrera and Pompey. This team is slow and playoffs require pinch runners. 6 relievers and Burly is plenty. 11 pitchers 14 hitters

His knee injury has surely put a stop to that foolishness.

Mac Outlaw Verified Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 I think you start Dickey Game Two because you want him pitching at home, not on the road. Give Stro Game 3.
Yorkshire Blue Jay Verified Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 If Pompey makes the playoff roster it will be to pinch run only - Gibby just doesn`t trust him. If he admitted to playing scared in regular season games then what will he be like in playoff games. Pompey has a lot of work ahead to regain that trust and if he does he could well flourish in the future but the club feels he`s just not ready.
harvey16 Verified Member Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Pompey will be the Willie Canate of the 1993 WS team. He only came in once to pinch run and got thrown out in a pickle at home. Never played another game in the MLB. Still got a WS ring though lol.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Jays current roster: Catchers (3) Russel Martin Josh Thole Dioner Navarro Infielders (10) Darwin Barney Josh Donaldson Edwin Encarnacion Ryan Goins Matt Hague Munenori Kawasaki Cliff Pennington Justin Smoak Troy Tulowitzki Chris Colabello Outfielders (5) Jose Bautista Ezequiel Carrera Kevin Pillar Dalton Pompey Ben Revere Pitchers (18) Mark Buehrle Brett Cecil Steve Delabar RA Dickey Marco Estrada Jeff Francis Latroy Hawkins Liam Hendriks Drew Hutchison Chad Jenkins Aaron Loup Mark Lowe Roberto Osuna David Price Aaron Sanchez Bo Schultz Marcus Stroman Ryan Tepera Once the post-season starts, we need to cut down to 25 players. Questions: 1) Who should make the cut? 2) Should the Jays consider dropping veterans like Buehrle/Dickey from the roster if it will give them a better team? 3) Should the Jays give preference to the 'guys that got them here' versus recent additions?

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 It's actually all pretty well decided and obvious. The only one I would change is Carrera for Pompey, since he's a better baserunner and has more power. However, since Pompey hasn't been given ANY at bats in September, that clearly isn't going to happen. The only interesting roster spot is deciding the last two pitchers between Buehrle, Hutch, and Loup. Hutch is probably on the outside looking in, but it's also possible that Hawkins is more injured than they're letting on and could get left out, opening a spot for Hutch. I don't mind Buehrle as the 2nd lefty and long man, I think that works fine and Loup should be optional. I would even consider keeping Pompey and Carrera rather than Loup. Catchers (2) Russel Martin Dioner Navarro Infielders (7) Josh Donaldson Edwin Encarnacion Ryan Goins Cliff Pennington Justin Smoak Troy Tulowitzki Chris Colabello Outfielders (4) Jose Bautista Ezequiel Carrera Kevin Pillar Ben Revere Pitchers (12) Mark Buehrle Brett Cecil RA Dickey Marco Estrada Latroy Hawkins Liam Hendriks Aaron Loup OR Drew Hutchison Mark Lowe Roberto Osuna David Price Aaron Sanchez Marcus Stroman
