Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Cannot believe we may need to keep navarro because out 80 million dollar catcher cannot catch estrada lol As much as I think Navarro is useless, we need a backup C anyway, and I'd rather it's him than Thole. Martin should catch every playoff game anyway, unless we're up 3-0 in the series and it's Estrada's turn.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Personally, I would be ashamed of this team if they left either Dickey or Buehrle off of the playoff roster.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Cannot believe we may need to keep navarro because out 80 million dollar catcher cannot catch estrada lol That's not the issue. If you had to choose, it's Martin/Thole or Martin/Navarro. This is because the Jays decided to have Martin catch Dickey. You need to give Martin rest anyways, so it was either have Martin catch Dickey and Navarro get one of the remaining four, or have Martin catch all 4 and Thole catch Dickey.

I don't think there's any consideration about leaving Dickey off the playoff roster whatsoever. If anything, he is our likely Game 2 starter, not Stroman.

Yeah i guess you are right, but why would you need rest martin, in the playoffs there are lots of off days in between games.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Yeah i guess you are right, but why would you need rest martin, in the playoffs there are lots of off days in between games. Yep. Also, when every game is so meaningful, we need his signficantly superior bat in the lineup. There's no such thing as personal catchers in the playoffs when we have a Top 5 catcher in baseball.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Cannot believe we may need to keep navarro because out 80 million dollar catcher cannot catch estrada lol So you want only 1 catcher on the roster? Or would you rather roll with Thole over Navarro? At least Navarro can be used as a PH in addition to being backup C
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Yeah i guess you are right, but why would you need rest martin, in the playoffs there are lots of off days in between games. If Martin has some freak injury, who catches the rest of the game?
Followthelight Verified Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 If Martin has some freak injury, who catches the rest of the game? Yeah you're right, I was thinking in the case of injury you could use another roster spot, my bad.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 If Martin has some freak injury, who catches the rest of the game? Donaldson has been the emergency 3rd C for most of the season, except when Thole has been up.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Yeah i guess you are right, but why would you need rest martin, in the playoffs there are lots of off days in between games. You probably don't need to rest Martin, but if you had to for some reason, I'd rather have Navarro in there than Thole. Navarro at least has caught more of the guys and a few seem pretty comfortable with him. Has Thole caught anyone other than Dickey this year? I'm assuming he has to a minimal degree. Plus, Navarro's bat plays better than Thole's.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 0% chance Thole makes the playoff roster.
Followthelight Verified Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 0% chance Thole makes the playoff roster. I would hope so...thole is a black hole.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 I see the team running with 11 pitchers instead of 12 to carry a second back up middle infielder in case of Tulo. SP: Price, Dickey, Stroman, Estrada RP: Mark B, Sanchez, Hawkins, Lowe, Cecil, Osuna and Hendricks Bench: Cola, Navarro, Pennington, Carerra/Pompey and Kawasaki
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Martin needs no rest in the post season, there is a day off for every series and off days between them not to mention he's about to get 4 months off. You still need a backup catcher though and Navarro is certainly the best choice. For the ALDS I would leave Buehrle off the roster, that's a wasted bench spot for late inning speed like Pompey or another back up infielder in Kawasaki when they pinch for Pennington and Goins with Smoak/Colabello or Navarro.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Yeah, the post-season has a lot more rest than the regular season, so we really don't need to carry that many relivers. Really, I think a team could get by with five relievers pretty easily, although we're more likely to run seven, with multiple lefties just for the luxury of being able to put the right/left matchups in our favor.

If Tulo gets injured we can deal with it after the game is over. We only need 1 backup
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 0% chance Thole makes the playoff roster. Do you maybe leave Hutch/Louper off the playoff roster and maybe and Kawa or Pompey for Pinch running late in games or if Tulo aggravates that shoulder of his .... Bullpen does need to be that deep.

Governator Community Moderator Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 If we can pitch Price & Dickey on short rest I'd go with a 3 man rotation and Estrada in the BP for the ALDS.
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 0% chance Thole makes the playoff roster. First sane post about catchers. Martin and navarro... DN is a solid option to PH.... Thole is useless
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 So Hutch is def out then. He failed at his bullpen shot. I'd take Burly over Loup in an important situation getting a LHB out. We don't need both. Really you only need a 10 man pitching staff and can bring both Pompey and Carrera for pinch running
Cyborg Verified Member Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 I'd go with: Catchers (2) Russell Martin Dioner Navarro Infielders (7) Josh Donaldson (3B) Edwin Encarnacion (DH) Ryan Goins (2B) Cliff Pennington (Backup IF) Justin Smoak (1B vs. R, PH otherwise) Troy Tulowitzki (SS) Chris Colabello (1B vs. L, PH otherwise) Outfielders (4) Jose Bautista (RF) Kevin Pillar (CF) Dalton Pompey (4OF/PR) Ben Revere (LF) Pitchers (12) Brett Cecil (L #1) RA Dickey (#3) Marco Estrada (#4) Latroy Hawkins (R #2) Liam Hendriks (SU) Drew Hutchison (R #3) Aaron Loup (L #2) Mark Lowe (SU) Roberto Osuna (CL) David Price (#1) Aaron Sanchez (R #1) Marcus Stroman (#2) Buehrle really has no use. Pompey is a better pinch runner than Carerra and that's what 4th OF will be used for.

Bullpen does need to be that deep. At this point, I really don't know what Hutch brings to the table at this point. If you have a "long" guy in Buehrle, not sure Hutch is necessary. Unless the idea for MB is to act as a second lefty in the pen, in which case Loup is unnecessary. Still think I prefer Loup in that role though.

I agree with you on Pompey, but if Gibbons is going to make the decision to take him over Carrera (which he should), then it behooves him to give Pompey at least a FEW damn PAs before the playoffs.
