Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 If it's basically a tie in the main categories maybe the tie breaker should be IP. I disagree. Basically you're saying a guy who got 7 WAR in 220 IP is better than a guy who got 7 WAR in 180 IP? How does that make sense?
Followthelight Verified Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 A win tonight would be great, puts us 2 games up in the division, guarantees an at worst 6-2 road trip, and another series win.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 What are you basing this on? Strictly ERA? lol... This isn't 2005, people don't care that much about W and ERA these days. Voters are more educated and care about things like WAR. Besides which, Sale's ERA will likely regress (in a good way) ROS while the other pitcher's ERAs regress (in a bad way) ROS. That's what FIP tells us. Yes. I get that it's not 2005 anymore, but a full run differential in ERA is probably enough to sway voters. Remember in 2012, when David Price won over Felix and Verlander? ERA and wins still matter a bit for many of the voters. Luckily the last 2 years have lined up where the best pitcher has also had plenty of wins and strong peripherals on top of their ERA.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Felix winning in 2010 with 'only 13 wins' was a watershed moment. ERA and W should really only be used as a tiebreaker between pitchers of extremely similar WAR, and even then I'd prefer Ks, myself. That's true, but he also had a much lower ERA than Verlander that year. Wins are clearly less important (maybe irrelevant now perhaps) but ERA is still important to many voters.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 That's true, but he also had a much lower ERA than Verlander that year. Wins are clearly less important (maybe irrelevant now perhaps) but ERA is still important to many voters. That's probably not the case anymore. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-corey-kluber-winning-the-cy-young-tells-us/
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 You could say the same about K rate, etc. At least IP says something about durability? I said Ks, not K rate. In any case, WAR is far and away the most important stat.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Hernandez is having a pretty off year. Maybe he's losing motivation because the Mariners continue to stink. Or maybe he's just declining, he's thrown a ton of innings in his career. He's 'only' 29, but he's been logging heavy innings since he was 20, so he's basically got as much mileage on his arm as your typical 33 or 34 year old ace.
baubau Verified Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Hernandez is having a pretty off year. Maybe he's losing motivation because the Mariners continue to stink. I didn't realize just how bad he was this year. 2.6 WAR. That is his 2nd worst in his career, 1st being his rookie season at 2.3 WAR. What a tank. I have to agree with Dr. Dinger however. The Mariners have sucked in the past and he still put up amazing numbers. He may just be declining.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 That's probably not the case anymore. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-corey-kluber-winning-the-cy-young-tells-us/ A lot of that seems like speculation despite a few quotes. Clearly FIP etc and park factors are more important now, but I'd like to see what every voter thinks. I don't know everyone who votes but you'd imagine some who voted for Kluber might say the ERA was close and he had a few more wins. I really highly doubt Sale can win with a whole run higher in ERA than a guy like Keuchel especially if the Astros win the division.
vdartanian Verified Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Smoak is in the line-up, everyone is happy. Personally I'm happier with Revere batting 7-8 and not 9! Meh, Revere is the perfect #9 hitter in an AL lineup, slap hitter who can use his speed to get on base for the big boppers, not enough power to be driving many runners in; although maybe he'll start trying to swipe a few more bags with Pillar and Goinsington hitting behind him.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 We are in tough company tonight... Lewis is 14-5. with an ERA over 4. This means Lewis gets good run support not that is that good. Wins is a bad meter mate.

Dr Negative Verified Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 I've heard that Felix is dealing with a lingering lower body injury. The Mariners should probably just shut him down and have him come back next year so that they can trade him midseason.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2015 Author Posted August 26, 2015 There was like 10 ppl who thought I was serious because everybody can't wait to jump on the first newb that walks in. There should be a rule where new posters aren't allowed to be sarcastic until they've made 300 posts. It's too hard to tell which new guys are dumn and which ones aren't.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Never thought Id be so happy to see Goins back in the line up. Pennington is better than he has showed. But not much.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 it would be nice if the jays could get the 2 game cushion tonight.

Maybe he was serious then backtracked quickly when called out lol. Justin Smoak batting fifth is pretty bad, dude strikes out too much.
labadee Verified Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 O.mg. Please god, make it stop. should have included this in your original post for the ones who took you seriously http://www.sheldonsfans.com/img_articles/original/90.gif

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Holy crap I was just reminded that the Jays are 20-4 over their last 24 games That's insane Its even more astonishing when you think one of those losses Lowe gave it up in an uncharacteristic 1st appearance with us and then of course Gibby bringing in Sanchez with runners on 2B and 3B with less than 2 out....and Beltran got him. Other than those the pen has been very good.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 Holy crap I was just reminded that the Jays are 20-4 over their last 24 games That's insane They had a 20-4 stretch last year too.

That's the issue with Revere batting 9th. You don't want him getting caught stealing with the heart of the order coming up, so even if he gets on for Tulo-FYSMC-Bautista-Edwin, they would be hesitant to send him. With Pillar and Goins batting after him, it's more logical to give him the green light.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 26, 2015 Posted August 26, 2015 anyone have a link for the guy that shows rogers on youtube? would like to see pregame.
