gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 He's at a 74 wRC+ and that's with the "hot streak" or "swing change", he's barely above replacement. He's still projected to be a 60-63 wRC+ replacement level player. He's not Andrelton Simmons, he needs to be a better hitter if he's to be of value to the team. To be fair, there hasn't been enough playing time surpassed after his swing change to see whether or not it will actually increase his offensive worth. He's always had a nice swing, but it was long with too much movement and he had no decisive plan at the plate. I like the fact he shortened his swing and is a lot more still with his hands. His pitch recognition seemed to improved now that he can let the ball travel a bit more with the shorter swing.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Relax bro, why are you so mad? Sarcastic stooges who think they now it all.

I don't put too much stock in to mechanical adjustments until there is a far larger track record but I do believe in players figuring out a better game plan and getting better in a hurry. I think Goins is cementing himself as a very useful utility player with enough upside to be a regular if he does figure it out at the plate.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 I think this was mentioned a little while ago, but was the median wRC+ for a middle infielder again? Just curious.. This was already answered, but I feel the need to address this: WAR includes a positional adjustment on its own, so you shouldn't then adjust his offense for position too. It'd be double counting. Goins needs 85 wRC+ to be valuable, probably. He's at 0.2 WAR (replacement level over a full season, more or less). He's also projected for replacement level. However, his defensive numbers are still noisy (-0.2 right now, which we all know is more noise than fact, especially since his numbers have been great last two years). If he can get to 85, he'll be at the very least a nice backup IF.

If league average is 100 wRC+, then wouldn't it be more accurate to take the two wRC+ ratings from shortstops (83) and second baseman (93) and combine them for a league average of 88 wRC+ for middle infielders?

Or just weigh shortstops at 83 and second basemen at 93...

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 If I was granted one wish, I'd give Goins a 60 hit tool just to watch this forum explode. unless it was a world where all the women were taken off the planet before my pick... uh... NO... I'd have billions of ideas that were better than giving goins a hit tool... here are 2 of those billions of options http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa95/Joseunseen/red-ferrari-hot-girl.jpg
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Goins' problem isn't as much his swing as it is his pitch recognition, it's terrible and it seems like he's often made up his mind whether or not he's swinging before the pitch ever leaves the mound. Pillar is in the same boat but he has far greater ability to put the bat on the ball, especially on pitches out of the zone. With that said, I've personally noticed improvements from both players in the last few weeks, but both still have a long way to go. Ang where can I catch a ball game down here this weekend thats within reasonable distance to the Rui Bamboo in Punta Cana?
Caper Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 BTW. We are approaching the 2 year anniversary of the "Can Ryan Goins Stick?" thread. I get a little chocked up even thinking about it. It was my baby. I am so proud that the question is still relevant almost 2 years later. I'm hoping the mods can open the thread for the anniversary just to post in it for the day.

Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 He does need to learn how to get the bunt down when times call for it.

Spoken words are much easier, is it normal for you English folks to write sarcasm?
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 The idea that a little setup tweak like that could somehow lead to Goins becoming "an asset similar to Kevin Pillar" is absurd.

No. Again. WAR compares a player's offense, defense, base running to league average, then adjusts all of that relative to position (then adds replacement level). http://www.fangraphs.com/library/misc/war/positional-adjustment/
43211234 Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Yes, he will be employed in the MLB for the next 10 years. I bet you $1000 that Ryan Goins will not play an mlb game in 2025. If he doesn't you have to pay me $10!

Right. But what if we just start comparing him with players in his position and not the rest of the league? God its like you don't even read what I writing GD.
