fireballW Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Missing a whole season could have an effect whether it is to his arm or not. He has a great start to his career and we all know the stuff he has, but it isn't like he is a super established ace yet either, even if that's what we were expecting from him.
Caper Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Usually it takes pitchers a month and a half to get ready and stretched out for the start of the regular season after the off season. This is comparable and if he is only ready for rehab come the 22nd that leaves him 2 weeks.... Would you risk your future #1 and rush him like that after being off 5-6 months due to injury..... That seems stupid too me That's if you hardly throwing a baseball for the offseason. I think he has always been keeping the arm a bit more stretched out.
Caper Verified Member Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Let him go out and start... throw 50 pitches.

He doesn't need to be an ace. Just good. Why does he have to pitch like an ace to make it a successful return?

There are a lot of very high expectations from some for a kid with 20 MLB starts coming off a significant leg injury.

candymartinez Verified Member Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Awesome news. It's only August 10th. With his work ethic, there is really a possibility he can start games in September at some time.
Caper Verified Member Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 If we are still rollin' and Stroman can get his innings up by say mid-september... it will make his whole injury thing... nto really a thing at all.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Playoffs rosters need to be set by August 31st right? If the Jays make the post season I don't see him on the 25 man... But I do think he'll see a few relief appearances in September. they have to set their playoff roster a month before the playoffs?

I think only players acquired from other teams after August 31st are ineligible for the postseason roster. I'm cautiously optimistic with Stroman. If he does come back, I will expect nothing and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

"Players who do not participate in one game in the Majors before September 1 with the team's organization of the regular season will be declared ineligible for the team's 25-man active roster of the postseason and must be placed on either the restricted list or the secondary squad." I'm not really sure on how post-season roster rules work, and how the restricted list and "second squad" come into play. I do know that Matt Moore made his big league debut on September 14, 2011 and still ended up making starts in the post-season for the Rays that same year.

To be playoff eligible you must be one of the following on August 31st: - on the 25 man major league roster, or - on the disabled list (7, 15, or 60 day DL), or - on the suspended list, or - on bereavement leave, or - on military active duty In addition, a club can replace any player who is injured at the time that playoff rosters are submitted. So, for every injured player, the club can add a player who was not on the major league roster, or any of the above eligibility lists at the end of August. In order to be eligible to be added in place of an injured player, one need not be on the 25 man roster, nor even the 40 man roster as of August 31. Any player in the organization as of August 31 can be used to replace an injured player, with permission from the commissioner’s office.

So basically, you have a sacrificial lamb on the DL and use them as a placeholder for Stroman?
McDude Verified Member Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Good. Wasn't sure about the DL part of that. Bring on the Stro Show! well, it sucks that pompey will probably be called up in september and not be eligible... sucks cuz he could easily be our second best outfielder and such a valuable piece to have for a run. Edit (derp): or because he played a few games in April, is he still eligible?

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Could you not call him up the last day of this month, send a bullpen piece down and then he can play in the post season? That is if we don't make a trade! After the deadline can you move a player down and call him back up just in time for the playoffs ? Ie Hutch?

Ie Hutch? the August 31st deadline is the 25 man roster for the ALDS. after the ALDS you again make your 25 man roster for the ALCS and then again a 25 man for the WS.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 you can always throw a guy on the DL and replace him with anyone in the org But what about qualifying the player for post season in that scenario for post season rather then sept. Call ups?
0ctobyte Verified Member Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 I thought it would be possible to simply call up Pompey before the August 31st deadline and he'd be eligible for playoff roster even if he was called up like one day before, no?
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 So is it now possible to get him stretched out as a starter? Would be a great #2 in the playoffs.
Jayzfan79 Verified Member Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 So is it now possible to get him stretched out as a starter? Would be a great #2 in the playoffs. playoffs you only need 4 starters. Price Dickey Stroman & Estrada Buehrle for Stroman, you could piggy back him with Estrada until he gets his stamina up. Once he regains his strength, you put Estrada in the pen. As for Hutch? the way he has pitched this year, he hasn't yet earned even one playoff start.
Torontojim Verified Member Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Don't expect him back this year.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Don't expect him back this year. He'll be back for sure by mid-September. The question is will he start or pitch out of the pen. Most likely he will pitch in relief.

When he looks good enough, Hutch to the pen?
