For a guy who never has managed a playoff game before this season, today really showed me just how good Gibby is. Near perfect strategy in terms of this game and setting up game 5.

 

It's amazing how 22 years of not being in the playoffs make people question such a great move as they haven't been exposed to playoff conditions.

 

Do or die game, winning is the your #1 mission. Bringing in Price, especially after Dickey, helps you make sure of that. Who cares if it's a 6 run lead, look at what happened in Houston.

 

You have your second ace setup to pitch game 5, and without Cecil you now have the luxury of potentially using Price out of BP Wednesday. In a tight game could be huge against certain lefties.

The smart people on twitter bashing the move just might not realize how good Stroman actually is, and they might not realize the massive impact of losing Cecil.

Teams that win in the playoffs aren't afraid to be progressive. Conservative thinking gets you buried in the playoffs.

Dickey and Price are close to locking up Game 4. And that was the goal.

 

As for game 5. Start Stroman...see where that goes. Maybe Estrada is available for 2-3 innings if need be. In the playoffs, you have to use your entire roster...and quite likely in unconventional ways.

Price threw 50 pitches, so a little more probably than bullpen. It would appear though that may line him up to piggyback Stroman if we can finish this off. It would also likely be Estrada's throw day, so he would be available for an inning or so Wednesday.

With Cecils injury we need to make a decision about someone from the bullpen. I guess they decided moving Price would give them a secure guy from the pen.

Starting Buehrle in that last game to try and get to 200 innings was insane. Worst move ever. Players all said the right thing but they must have been thinking the Blue Jays organization is a joke. Price likely decided there's zero chance of re-signing with the Jays after that. That's part of what caused this 0-2 start to the playoffs.

 

Thanks a lot Gibby. You're fired. Worst move ever. He killed the teams momentum.

Using Price here was beneficial in 3 different ways, first it was throwing in your hard throwing ace after seeing a knuckle ball for 4+ innings, and more importantly, it kept everyone on proper rest/rotation, and provided Price with an opportunity for a confidence boost while avoiding another blow up in Game 5.

 

Look at it this way, from a rotation pov, if you save Stroman and Price for Game 5, neither could pitch until Game 3 of the ALCS.

 

Now look at it from a rest perspective. If Price starts Game 5, Stroman pitches Game 1 on 7 days rest (may not be as effective). If Stroman pitches Game 5, Price pitches Game 1 on 8 days rest (has proven to not be as effective).

 

With today's move, Price and Stroman can start Game 2 and 3 in order, on their regular 4 days rest each. It's a great move and anyone questioning it doesn't see the big picture.

Good points. Although they could roll with Price in Game 1 on ~3.5 days rest if they want.

Not only that but we had no other lefty in the pen so we were able to get one against their big lefty bats multiple times. I'm on board with it being a good move.

First of all, this was a great move because Stroman has been the better pitcher since his 1st start in September, does not have confidence issues when pitching against Texas in the post-season, and for the reasons I listed above in my long post, plus Loup was unavailable vs a lineup with a left-handed middle of the order.

They could have used just about anyone today and then had Price able to throw any number of pitches Wednesday in backing up Stroman.

 

Why would you him to try and sort out his mental problems in Game 5 of the ALDS, and potentially not be available until Game 3 of th ALCS, when you can keep everyone on regular rest for the ALCS and give Price a breather from his ball of nerves facing Texas in the post-season?

You're assuming that "just about anyone" has the ability to hold the lead which isn't how baseball works obviously. Gibby went with the odds and I don't see how anyone can hate on him for that in this situation.
