Report: Orioles considered boycotting Tuesday's game over Blue Jays' new turf

The Baltimore Orioles reportedly contacted Major League Baseball over the turf conditions at Rogers Centre after infielder Jimmy Paredes was hit in the face by a grounder during batting practice Tuesday.

Paredes' injury even prompted the Orioles to consider boycotting their series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun, due to concerns over the new playing surface. Paredes, who took a bad hop off the side of his face while playing third base, was not seriously injured.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter later noted the slow-playing effect of the new turf, but provided no indication his team was considering skipping Tuesday's game. The Blue Jays won the opener 13-6 before completing the three-game sweep Thursday.

"Just because something’s different, it doesn't mean it’s bad," Showalter said Tuesday. "We’ll see."

Encina adds that the Orioles believe the new turf is a major problem, saying it's spongy, too slow, and produces untrue hops.

Friday's report comes a week after Jon Morosi of FOX Sports said the league is monitoring the surface due to concerns over irregular bounces during the Blue Jays' opening series against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Blue Jays, who made the change after years of playing on a much harder turf, are expected to transition to natural grass for the start of the 2018 season.

Jesus, what a bunch of babies. What, do they change the turf in between innings to give the Jays an advantage?

These s***** teams who had a recent short run of success are the worst.

Look at the Royals now. 3 of their series so far have been shitshows

It's a shame for the Orioles that it didn't slow down the homers that we hit.

I believe that the turf will be getting a lot of complaints from teams that we manage to beat at home. TB and Atlanta weren't whining to MLB.

The turf's new the seams are noticeable on tv but they play way way better than the drop in trays they used in the past.

The more they roll it up, the quicker it will get.

I personally hate the way the new turf is acting, but what is MLB gonna do? Force them to play the game in Baltimore for the series instead?

Blue Jays should "protest" the walls in Baltimore for being too high over the scoreboard.

The new turf does seem to have it's issues with how slow it is and some of the weird hopes near the dirt but it's new. Give it some games and see where it goes. Obviously if MLB had a problem with it before they wouldn't have allowed the Jays to put it in. I'm sure there's some process MLB's front office plays in it.

it's like people have come into a little money but have no idea how to be so they want everyone to notice that they have money.

Why are people concerned over "weird hops" when there are stadiums out there with giant walls 200 ft away in RF.

Where did Buck say they were thinking of Boycotting or that it was unfair? There's nothing here to suggest that except some newspaper scrub starting s*** with no sources.

Yep, boycott every stadium that doesn't have legal dimensions and force them to rebuild their s***** parks to code!

I found the picture of Showalter when he contacted the MLB office:

More whining

But De Aza also contended that the way Toronto third baseman Josh Donaldson blocked the bag on the play — he used his left leg to prevent De Aza from reaching the base — was dangerous.

“He blocked it. I’m not saying it was bad, but he shouldn’t block like that, because he can hurt somebody,” De Aza said. “Somebody can get hurt like that. Thank God I didn’t jam anything, but something bad could happen there.”

De Aza slid into the bag headfirst, reaching for the outside corner of the base with his left hand. Even with that, the two players made contact on the play. De Aza said he believes he would have gotten hurt had he reached for more of the bag.

“I wish I had it back,” De Aza said. “I thought I had the bag. If he didn’t block me the way he blocked me, I would have gotten there, but unfortunately, I didn’t. From my standpoint, I think it hurts because we had one of the big guys hitting, so anything could happen there.”
