Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Jon Morosi #MLB is actively monitoring the turf situation at Rogers Centre due to irregular bounces on the surface, source says. Montreal, here we go!!
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 Jon Morosi #MLB has not arrived at any conclusions or resolutions about Rogers Centre turf, but league concerned about anything affecting fair play.
bendera3 Verified Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I think if MLB has a problem with different turfs they should decide on a standard one. It would be a real shame if all the money poured into the new turf goes to waste because it has to be replaced.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 The black s*** is possibly distracting to the players and the ball seems to run unusually slow on line drives to the outfield I haven't seen any real funny bounces but have only watched half the games. Have there been some?

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 WTF? If we end up having to change the turf, that would be an epic fail by Rogers/Beeston/whoever decided on the new stuff. Why was this not tested and/or ok'd by MLB before they installed it?

Kind of puzzles me that the Jays brass did not test this with a baseball team actively playing on it. They could have brought in a local baseball team to try it out. Or as the Canadian Juniors.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Hopefully mlb grows some balls and makes them put in grass at the end of the year and use the old turf this year...lol

Mandated that the turf be installed 'x' number of days in advance so they ascertain its merits? What a donkey show.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 The same black s*** was spraying up on the previous turf too. 1 million times less though
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Seems like an issue they could potentially address by just reducing the amount of rubber fill.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 The rubber pellets are part of every turf field. I can't imagine they're the issue. Either way, lol Blue Jays. Get the f***ing Argonauts out and do this thing the right way. Just like roster construction, the Jays have good intentions but just end up failing. The entire organization should be embarrassed this has to be "actively monitored".
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 Google glasses for everybody
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 lol at this organization
Nightmaul Verified Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 The same black s*** was spraying up on the previous turf too. No. I think everyone else here would agree it was nothing like this.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 The rubber pellets are part of every turf field. I can't imagine they're the issue. I don't know... Doesn't it seem like there's way too much of them?
Nightmaul Verified Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I don't know... Doesn't it seem like there's way too much of them? Yes. In the first game played the SS got hit in the eye by that black s***. Don't try to pretend it's nothing new.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Author Posted April 15, 2015 Aaron Sanchez projections improved
Praxis Verified Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Would the black pellets make that much of a difference though? It seems that balls hit into the outfield are just dying and that might be more a product of the turf itself and the woven fibres being too thick.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I don't know... Doesn't it seem like there's way too much of them? Maybe there is. I have been swamped with school so I haven't watched the last couple of games. What has been the issue? The only thing I really know of is when Ass Dribble had something in his eye?
fireballW Verified Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Was at ST when they got a new turf football field. It was supposed to be real high quality and we played a lot out there. It was really nice to run and dive on so I never really got why players complained about turf. Now I'm guessing this new stuff is more similar to what we had there because a lot of rubbed would kick up there too.

It seems that balls hit into the outfield are just dying and that might be more a product of the turf itself and the woven fibres being too thick. My initial thoughts too. I feel like if there is an issue it has to do more with the turf itself than the fill. I don't know much about turf though, other than baseball shouldn't be played on it.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Maybe there is. I have been swamped with school so I haven't watched the last couple of games. What has been the issue? The only thing I really know of is when Ass Dribble had something in his eye? Two issues, don't know if they are related or independant. 1) Turf is kicking up an awful lot of that black crap (see picture from John Lott that I posted ITT). 2) Turf is really slow certainly slower than grass but traditionally turf surfaces are faster than grass. I'm not convinced that being slow is worse than being fast but a happy medium would be nice. Maybe less crap in the field would have this added benefit. Might just be something the players will have to get used to even if issue 1 is addressed.
baubau Verified Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Man I would love to have the job of the guy in the MLB that monitors the turf. Just imagine his day. 8:00 am - Woke Up 9:00 am - At Rogers center // Field is still Turf 12:00 pm - Still at Rogers center // Turf has not yet magically turned into anything else 3:00 pm - Thought I saw grass, was still just artificial Turf #Monitored!
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 The last time the turf was replaced, there was a lot of rubber kicking up all the time too initially. It took a month or so to settle down if I remember right. This is nothing different than in the past. The only issue is whether there are unusual bounces (like that chopper in front of the plate the other day), or what happens in the summer when it gets really warm.
