KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Thanks for the reminder. Really a great video. Yeah I'v watched this a bunch of times and it's still interesting. Great story. Hopefully there's another chapter left to be told.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 What the hell is DRA? Deserved Run Average. It's new!
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Dickey has a DRA of 3.83, and Hutch's is 3.86. Not bad at all. Nice. It will be interesting to see what DRA means in terms of luck in small sample sizes. Interesting that they have bad ERAs and FIPs but decent DRA.
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 One bad game at Fenway and people are resurrecting this thread and thinking about trades for Papelbon. Any bullpen issues can be solved with internal options at this point. Let's focus on getting the starters out of the 6th inning and under 5 FIP before crucifying the bullpen. Unless Papelbon plans on converting back to a starter bringing him to Toronto will not remotely plug the leak that's been plaguing this team. I brought up Pabelbon but I named several other internal options and ideas of what could be done. I was trying to find out what realistic scenarios will play out. Also, it hasn't been one game, c'mon. They have 5 saves and 4 blown... I'd like to see how many holds they've given up, but not sure if a site tracks that by team. They have simply not been good in many high leverage situations and like you said internally it can be fixed... but when?

They got rid of the dead-weight in Redmond. Can the young guys "perform under pressure" consistently...a little early to tell. You can't look at the blown save stat in isolation though considering how many opportunities there have been to blow saves. You can't do Ward-Henke or Acker-Ward-Henke if every starter needs to be pulled in the 5th or 6th inning. I don't get your line: "I'd like to see how many holds they've given up" Isn't a blown hold just a blown save? Or is this another new stat I'm not aware of that's being parceled out thanks to mankind's ability to make superior micro-processors then apply that improved computing power to collecting new baseball stats.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 all you youngin's with your DRA's and VORPs and what not. Back in my day..

If you blow the lead in the 7th inning, is that a blown save? I know holds are stats so I was just wondering.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 If you blow the lead in the 7th inning, is that a blown save? I know holds are stats so I was just wondering. Holds can only come in save situations so blown holds end up counting as blown saves.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 If you blow the lead in the 7th inning, is that a blown save? I know holds are stats so I was just wondering. Assuming the starting pitcher pitches 5 and leaves with a tight lead (3 or less, or tying run on deck) it's a save opportunity. Baseball rules can't predict if the RP coming in pitches to the end of the game or not, so it's always a save opportunity and thus a blown save is credited to the pitcher responsible if that lead is lost for the starting pitcher. The term "hold" was invented when HOF pitchers like Rich Gossage were replaced by one inning specialists so the guy who pitched the 7th could get credit for something. Not sure if the rules will ever change to call it a blown hold instead of blown save, given that nowadays no one expects a relief pitcher in the 7th to finish the game unless it's mop up duty.
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Maybe it's time to take a look at delabar.
bronson44 Verified Member Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Maybe it's time to take a look at delabar. I'd rather see West or Bo Schultz before him
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Maybe stick Dickey in the pen. Every starter goes 4 or 5 innings now anyways. Put in 2-3 innings from Dickey then the hard throwing guys at the end of the game. If every batter sees the knuckleball at least once in between 95 MPH fastballs I wonder if that'll be enough for the "knuckleball effect"? Have him throw 200 IP from the BP like a Wakefield-Gossage hybrid. In the off-chance that throwing too many knuckleballs destroys his arm...who cares...he's 40 now.
Nafro Verified Member Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 I'd rather see West or Bo Schultz before him West was DFA'd. You can maybe see him do well in another org. Interestingly Rotoworld is reporting West has not pitched this year. I hope every other team thinks that and no one puts a claim in.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 Cecil looked really good last night. Best velocity of the season and threw strikes. The bullpen is taking shape: http://www.breakingblue.ca/2015/05/05/the-toronto-blue-jays-bullpen-is-taking-shape/

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 The bullpen did everything they could again to blow this one. They need to work harder
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 The defense did everything they could again to blow this one. They need to work harder Ftfy.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 delabar has been decent so far..his splitter looks really good this year.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Ftfy. Reyes failed on that DP but Hendrik's was hard hit multiple times
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Reyes failed on that DP but Hendrik's was hard hit multiple times Eaton singles in 8th, Sanchez scores and Eaton goes to 2nd on the throw home from Colabello which went over the the cut-off man. Next batter hits a grounder to SS that Reyes dove for and kept in the IF. I would argue that had Eaton not been allowed to advance to 2nd Reyes would've been more towards the hole thus in a better position to get to that gb. On the replay, you can see Reyes trying to keep Eaton close to 2B. There were missed DP's earlier in the game as well, even from Donaldson. Anyway, overall, yes, the pitching has been bad, but there were several misplays by the defense in this game that led to runs being scored.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Not a bullpen problem if our starter was not garbage tonigh and did his f***ing job like he gets paid to do! Again our bullpen is league average or better in most stats not everyone can be Kc! But our starters the are close to the bottom of the pile of heaping pile of s*** you can get, lil better of late! But it is not a pen issue! Compared to other issues this team faces in area's of concern!
glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 The defense was horrendous tonight. Even Dickey would have ended up pitching decently if he had a defense behind him, never mind the pen. I think a pen of Cecil, Osuna, Loup, Hendriks, and Delabar is fine. Just need Bautista back in RF, ASAP.
