Not a great night, but he got the job done. And he showed a few innings of like "wow, that's awesome" potential. So take it for now.

Note how he left with the lead, and we won the game?

It was ugly, but he's the 5th starter. So I'm sorry that he had sex with your girlfriend, mom and sister at the same time, but jeebus, this is not an end of the world scenario.

Homer alert.

7 walks in 5 innings is most definitely not getting the job done. he was bailed out by an extremely lucky dp in the first and had another dp go his way later iirc.

i enjoyed the 2 innings of dominance but come on, 7 f***ing walks... if that isn't a red flag i don't know what is.

Run prevention is a combination of the pitcher, the defense, the ballpark and the luck dragons. Tonight, Aaron Sanchez pitched very poorly but the defense, the ballpark and the luck dragons performed in the Blue Jays favour so the team as a whole succeeded in preventing a below-average number of runs, a low enough total to win the game.

There's no reason to assign the win or the two runs allowed to Sanchez. He did not perform his job to a high level.

You will all note that the start of my comment was "It was ugly", right?

f*** man. Guy pitched around his s*** well enough to hold on... There have been worse pitching performances that have been wins, and there have been much, much better pitching performances that have been losses...

Again, Guy is 22 (23?) with a power arm and upside, and he's the #5 pitcher. I'm not complaining when a guy throws a s***** game and the Jays still win. I'm not in love with Sanchez, but he's better than a LOT of the starters that the Jays have tossed out there in the past decade.

He's 22 with lights out stuff. You run him out there every 5th day, coach him, and if he has even average control, he is dominating

They really can't let him make his next start. Guy has 12 walks and 9 strikeouts in 14 innings with an xFIP of almost 5.5. You can't just keep sending him out there.

I fully understood the point you were trying to make. My point is that Sanchez had very little to do with the fact that he appeared to pitch around s***. The other factors of run prevention blended in a way that allowed the Blue Jays (with Sanchez on the mound) to escape jams. He isn't to be commended for something that happened largely independent of his contributions. His was a truly awful pitching performance, sorry.

The dragon sending the ball right at gloves sure helped Sanchez tonight. D was really good except for Goins booting the ball in left.

We had some really good AB tonight. they came with a plan of making Jimenez have to throw a lot which is something they didn't do last time around. Today they gave him the chance to make mistakes and hit the mistakes.

good to get 4 runs today.

Smoak had more to do with the win than Sanchez

agree. Have to hope that Gibbons doesn't use the "win" as a reason to let him go again. Os were exceptionally unlucky today. Our D made the plays when the Os were unlucky, but it could have been ugly. That line drive that smoak turn into a DP was great and the Travis- Reyes DP was also sweet. it could have easily been 10 runs for the Os.

Yeah this is a win I put in my "shouldn't have won that game" column

I really love those kind of games. lol you're not going to play well in every game, so you need to win some when you really have no right winning them.

So I guess when Buehrle gives up 7 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings but only 2 runs you will say he blows and needs to go back to the minors.....right that's what I thought

Only 2 hits in 5 1/3 innings he is definitely getting a few more starts...if they can get him throwing more strikes he will be a solid mid rotation pitcher

The "everyone deserves to stay in a role until they absolutely 100% prove that they are not cut out for it" approach is a terrible one. The evidence available to us suggests Sanchez is not the best option.

Too much good stuff not to keep riding him. It's a big if, but the upside is pretty big if he can start hitting his spots.

It's the type of thinking that led to Jo-Jo Reyes making 20 starts in 2011. I think you've railed against it before.

Do you remember what Wilmer was saying about Jo Jo? What an embarrassment

I've actually liked what I've seen from Sanchez this year, but more for a rotation spot in 2016. He clearly needs to go down to the minors and work on his ability to throw strikes (or even good pitches) consistently.

Anyone who thinks all hope is lost on him is being pessimistic. A couple of the walks today were actually on very good pitches (i.e. borderline strikes) so the number 7 is a little bit inflated (But still a bad sign).

Maybe even a half year in the minors would let him work some stuff out

Hits allowed means almost nothing when evaluating a pitcher. In a single start you're better looking at what kind of balls were being put in play, and in this case there were a lot of hard hit balls. Sanchez may have had one of the luckiest starts in Blue Jays history.

Sanchez was getting screwed on a few borderline pitches but don't get it twisted, he still had no clue where the ball was going most of the night.

How anybody could encode last night's performance as anything but awful is pretty amazing. The guy f***ing sucks. He might get better but right now he's a true talent replacement level (or lower) starter.

6.05 SIERA or +36 xFIP is replacement level talent?
