We got hosed on that trade, that I agree. The problem is that the fanbase demanded we do something big back in 2012 to get us into contention.. casual fans weren't going to wait 3 years for Syndergaard. Now if only the Mets position players could hit.. they're near the bottom in offense, and that might be an issue considering they're chasing the Nats in the NL East.

The other issue was that the Jays had already taken on a big financial commitment and given up a lot of controlable inexpensive talent in the Marlins trade. There was incentive to make another big "win now" move so that it could all work out which is why I have always considered the Mets trade way more defensible in context than the Marlins trade.

Of course, the Marlins half of the trade hasn't exactly worked out either.. Miami still stinks, and Marisinick is playing for Houston now, Alvarez is hurt, DeSclafani got traded himself to Cincy (possibly even worse trade.. Latos has been terrible.), and Nicolino is still in the minors and not exactly putting up eye-popping numbers.

I don't buy this at all. I can understand the mindset for a Cueto or Hamels. 40 year old gimmick pitcher? No way anyone in their right mind thought this would work out for the Jays in the long term and you'd be a fool to put your eggs in Dickey's basket for the short term too.

The fact that he was old and a gimmick pitcher is what kept his salary low though. It's hard for a team like the Jays to add an ace, much less a cheap one. I can see why they might have thought Dickey was some kind of baseball unicorn even if ultimately he wasn't. I actually think that once they decided to go all in, they needed to make more trades like this for it to have a chance to work out. The whole off-season was a half-ass attempt to go all in. It was more than enough to hurt them considerably down the road but not enough to win now. They either needed to get way more aggressive or (preferably) be way more cautious.

All of this. The most maddening thing about AA is going "all-in", yet punting the last 3 or 4 roster spots.

Syndergaard projects better going forward in both timelines, yep. That's not an indictment of Hutch though, he's a good young mid-rotation starter. The point was just how useful Syndergaard would truly be to this team right now.

Syndergaard will end up providing more surplus value than Dickey over the three years of Dickey's contract:

- Syndergaard is projected to end the three-year run at 3.3 fWAR (assuming 20 starts rest-of-season), making the prorated minimum. That's $20MM+ of pure surplus at $7MM/win.

- Dickey is projected by Fangraphs Depth Charts to end the three-year run at 4 fWAR, making $30MM total. With generous knuckleball hangover effects added in, he may approach Syndergaard.

Also can't use FWAR for Dickey as he has routinely beat his FIP.

North also isn't incorporating defense and steals. The knuckleball effect doesn't need to be all that generous for him to approach Syndergaard.

His point in general stands though.

Of course. The Donaldson WAR calculation for the trade is probably just as lopsided though just thinking off the top of my head.

Not sure about that. I wonder though, if Donaldson had been gotten for Syndergaard and d'Arnaud, and Dickey for Lawrie/Graveman/Barreto/Nolin, would people be as pissed?

Really though the killer was the Marlins deal.

After working so hard to get to the majors after losing his top prospect eligibility, Yankees OF Slade Heathcott is injured AGAIN.. Grade 2 quad strain. Ramon Flores got recalled.

DeSclafani pitching a gem so far for the Reds. Conger just took one right off the love spuds for Houston after it ricocheted off Eaton and it looked like it really hurt. Ouch.
