Really don't get why the Padres want Shields.

Big game pitcher and they are a lock for big games with Kempton in the fold. You don't go into September with Tommy John Recoveries...Same reason the Jays made the Dickey trade.

they don't

Cashner, Ross, Kennedy, shields, Despaigne, Morrow, Johnson........could be pretty good. They are at least in the conversation. An key injury or two with the competition and they have a fighting chance. I don't think they're lineup is great, but it's better than it was.

Dodgers!! and Giants. I learn to stop counting the Giants out. No chance at the division or 1st wildcard. Maybe 2nd wildcard

That's 3 injury risks, and a probable bag of s*** in Despaigne. The rotation would look like Shields, Ross, Kennedy, ___,____, at some point (Wisler, Eflin?). I get why he's a fit, but they probably want him cause he's BIG GAME JAMES

Their team seems pretty good. Myers/Middlebrooks could both breakout. Quentin could be nice depth I wonder if they will give him a look at 1B. If they got Shields I might pick them for the 2nd wild card, remember they have the 2 worst MLB teams in their division.

Hey, don't forget about Luebke. Is he healthy? Another sleeper to add with Johnson/Morrow.

Pretty sure the Jays would have to outbid a team like the padres to get shields maybe if padres offered 4/80 jays would have to offer extra year.

I still think Shields at 5/95 would be awesome!!

Brandon Morrow and Brandon Maurer for one spot. They count as only one person on the 40 man too

Don't forget Erlin, should be able to buy some time for Wisler. Even though he does have an injury history.

San Diego is his home town team. I know I would take less cash to play for my home town team (well assuming I liked my home town). San Diego - nice weather, probably less taxes, not a homer dome so my stats will look better.

Or you know Toronto - humid and freezing cold, higher taxes, homer dome, have to deal with the travel issues, and not a winning team. BUT on paper we look like we will score runs and lots of up and coming talent. I just don't think that will be enough and we'd have to go $2 million more per year and 1 more year than whatever San Diego offers.

At least Gibby said he wanted him. Money be damned eh Gibster.

there's always a chance in baseball as long as you have a decent amount of talent, even if others in your division have better talent. Bumgarner could be under the knife in April, so could Kershaw. Injuries happen at any time. Last year 88 wins for both Pittsburg and the Giants won the wild card and the next closest was Milwuakee with 82. Pittsburgh could take a step back. The Padres absolutely would be in the mix in the wild card with shields imo. They won 77 games last year.

I'm pretty sure taxes between Ontario and California are a wash, specially when they calculate it based on where you pitch on every day.

Cost of living is lower in California but i doubt he cares much about it.

without looking it up, I think the taxes in California are higher. I remember reading an article about phil mickelson complaining about the taxes and I was shocked at the amount of tax there was in Cali. With the falling loonie housing prices are actually on par with those in San Diego. Can't beat the weather though.

Highest in the U.S. I believe. They even tax visiting teams players.

I keep reading it's 4/70 from SD and that's the extent of their budget but maybe that's a sticking point and is what's dragging it out a little longer. I predict 4/75, I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Where are you reading that?

Something is up with Shields that we don't know. If he signs for less than 4/80 like the rumours suggest I bet he'll fall off of a cliff. That's crazy for a guy of his calibre.

You don't say, what does that have to do with our outfield depth being bad? Is outfield the only part of a team now idiot?

lol

If the Cubs get him, they'll be a potential World Series threat if their young players (Bryant, Baez, Russell, etc.) emerge. But really, make up your mind, Shields! It's only 2 weeks until pitchers/catchers report!
