Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Author Posted May 25, 2015 GM Alex Anthopoulos and manager John Gibbons could be fired if the Blue Jays don’t start winning, Jim Bowden of ESPN writes (Insider-only). Bowden notes that the executives the Jays reportedly sought last offseason to replace business-oriented team president Paul Beeston, like Dan Duquette of the Orioles and Ken Williams of the White Sox, have baseball backgrounds. That might say something about the organization’s level of satisfaction with its on-field product. The Jays have gone heavily after veteran talent in the past several seasons, but they have little to show for it, and they’re currently in last place in what’s been a mediocre division.

Based on that, I'll bet it'll be soon.. things need to change in Toronto.

IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Depends on how he handles Bautista and EE, if he ends up getting a mediocre return I say fire him
Key22 Verified Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 I cut AA some slack overall because most of his moves at the time have been plausible. Fact is we don't know what his superiors were ordering him to do. He was in build for the future and for all we know some numbnuts ordered him to increase season ticket sales by bringing in vets. Toronto is a market that is VERY VERY likely to be on most players no trade lists and "I don't want to sign in a foreign country" list of free agents. If Boston or NY is on 1 player's no trade list you can be sure it is 10 or 20 times or more on other player's no trade list. It's pretty difficult to be a GM of a team that has its hands tied behind its back and that isn't AA's fault. He can't sign free agents who won't come here, he can't make trades for players who have power to say no and they do when it is Toronto and he can't pay free agents who do want to come here if he doesn't have the money to be able to sign them. And Gibbons - poor Gibbons. The man can't pitch for his pitchers - when your entire pitching staff leads the league in suckage and you're down 5-0 by the 4th most every night and your starters barely ever get to the 7th Managing the team is an endless series of trying to put out fires - but when your bullpen is filled with a bunch of leaking gas cans it's kind of miraculous the team has managed to the record they've managed. I'm not really against them firing people - but I want a real replacement - an absolute PROVEN winner who has won multiple world series titles and is a surefire quality GM. I don't want them hiring one hit wonders, or guys with experience at running losers. Billy Beane is viewed as a GM God to some and yet he traded Donaldson to us for what exactly - four AAAA scrubs? If one of the best in the game was dumb enough to do that then I can cut AA slack on Dickey - and really Dickey and Yan Gomes was the ones that stick out - but to be fair AA's entire staff and most teams in baseball missed Gomes. Dickey was the result that no free agents (who are worth having) will come to Toronto and the ONLY way he could get an established arm was to trade. Even if you say "well AA should have traded for a better arm like Hamels" - turns out those better arms with 5-10 rights or have it in their contracts wouldn't waive them anyway. I think people need to be able to see what was offered - and all the other behind the scenes things to dump it on AA. I think they desperately need to move Reyes - contract is another Vernon Wells.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Depends on how he handles Bautista and EE, if he ends up getting a mediocre return I say fire him I doubt he'll even be allowed to trade them, which is a good thing. I mean, he did make some good trades in the off-season, so he probably wouldn't get ripped off if he traded them, but still would rather have the new GM be the one who handles that.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Depends on how he handles Bautista and EE, if he ends up getting a mediocre return I say fire him Why would he move them? AA is going down with this ship.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Let's not forget that Paul Beaston was originally a temporary hire to help with the transition to a new President and only decided after the fact that he should in fact be that new president. This guy is milking it for all it's worth. A smooth transition may not even be possible. He'll probably have to be forced out like he nearly was this off-season in favour of Duquette.

Does he draft his own employment contract? Why is it all his decision to stay on?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Does he draft his own employment contract? Why is it all his decision to stay on? Well he was litterally tasked with finding his own replacement when he first came in and ultimately recommended himself as his own replacement. That being said, you raise a good point. There seems to be a bit of a leadership vaccuum above Beaston. The terms (and length) of his employment shouldn't be this fluid.

He's probably making a ton of money. I wouldn't want to leave or find someone to replace me if I were him, either. If the Jays remain status quo after a season like this, they deserve everything they get.
BTS Community Moderator Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Is he not aware that he was almost forced out like 3 months ago?
CHRIS Verified Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 I'm glad Beeston is having fun. Someone should be.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Is he not aware that he was almost forced out like 3 months ago? Beeston hasn't been able to find socks for 30 years. Pretty sure he's not aware of 3 months ago.

Smokey Verified Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 You clearly have it all wrong... All Beeston really wants to do is to fulfill his promise and since it's not looking like we'll be making the playoffs this year, he's willing to make the sacrifice neccassary to assure that it happens next year... or possibly even the year after. All I know is that it's great to have such a devoted president. http://www.thestar.com/content/dam/thestar/sports/baseball/2009/10/27/blue_jays_president_paul_beeston_sticking_around/paulbeeston.jpeg

In this photo, Beeston is: A) Rye drunk Gin drunk C) High on extra-strength cold sore meds
CHRIS Verified Member Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 I'll have to look more closely at the next press conference that involves Beeston, but at this point, I think the most likely explanation of his behavior is that we've stumbled on a "Weekend at Beeston's" scenario whereby Beeston has actually died, and his movements are the result of a complex yet discreet marionette system. Kind of like the live production of "War Horse". After a while, you just don't notice the puppeteers anymore.
