RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Right, Dickey is 40 years old, . The Nature of Dickey's type of pitching is unaffected by age. See Wakefield.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Are you Grant? btw Zach Stewart still suxx No... Lol yeah Zach Stewart DOES suck. What a bust.
Westfan Verified Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 I suspect 40 year old bodies will break down more often than 25 year olds. More to a pitcher body than just the arm. Dickey is supposed to keep himself in great shape but he is still 40
xposbrad Verified Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 The Nature of Dickey's type of pitching is unaffected by age. See Wakefield. That's only true to a certain extent. If he was a regular pitcher he wouldn't have been pitching past 35-36 most likely. The fact is, all pitchers decline and stop at some point. There is cardio/stamina and other factors that affect a pitcher, and look how Wakefield did his last 2 years. Even knuckle ballers call it a day at some point.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Are you Grant? btw Zach Stewart still suxx Im trying to remember that pitcher that Grant liked so much and it wasnt Stewart
Ehjays Verified Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Im trying to remember that pitcher that Grant liked so much and it wasnt Stewart I looked it up on Draft Results from the Jays Main Page Grant loved david Purcey
Ehjays Verified Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 I looked it up on Draft Results from the Jays Main Page Grant loved david Purcey Zach Stewart, David purcey ,,,,,Grant always had a keen eye for talent. LOL
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Well, the casuals at my local were bitching about Melky leaving for another team tonight... That makes me even more comfortable with it.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 The Nature of Dickey's type of pitching is unaffected by age. See Wakefield. Keep in mind Dickey throws his knuckleball 10-15 mph harder than Wake did....time will tell how age affects his velocity. It's too simplistic to simply say see Wakefield...
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 No... Lol yeah Zach Stewart DOES suck. What a bust. It is for sure not Grant. Grant would never admit he was wrong about anything.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 Brett Wallace! Grant had the 3rd greatest eye for hitting talent of all time (after Cito and Murph) and guaranteed Wallace would be a star.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 It is for sure not Grant. Grant would never admit he was wrong about anything. Grant would just disappear from the forum for days until things blew over. Biggest coward of all time.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 If the jays allocate the money saved here to the bullpen I have no issues. However if this was just a case of not willing to pay for Melky than I would be disappointing. We could have done a lot worse at DH then Melky.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 The bigger ballpark will take number on his offensive numbers, he squeaked many HR's and ground rule doubles in Rogers Centre last year and in Chicago those are outs or maybe just singles off the wall because of his speed. Add in the much bigger negative impact playing in a larger LF will have and he will probably regress back to just a 1ish WAR player. Wasn't Melky better on the road?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 Just because you don't see something doesn't mean its not there. I don't too many fat disgusting out of shape baseball players that don't spend the majority of their 30s out of the disability list. Mo Vaughn 30 thru 32 12.2 fWAR John Kruk 30 thru 32 14.2 fWAR (got to admit that one even surprised me) Greg Luzinski 30-32 7.1 fWAR (that was at DH) Miguel Cabrera 30-31 13 fWAR Boog Powell 30-32 8.6 fWAR Kirby Puckett 30-32 12.2 fWAR Tony Gwynn 30-32 12.8 fWAR (age 34-38 13.5) Babe Ruth ... five 10 fWAR seasons after the age of 30....nine over 5.0 Funny how I've grown to hate the fatty...but so many on this list were among my all time faves.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 Smoak at $1M + draft pick > Melky at $14M Its hard to respect you when you say things like that. Often you make sense, but then you go ahead and post up the same type of non sensicle fantasy land scenerios like the rest of the people here.

Yes lets compare him to hall of famers, mean while lets forget all the hurt attack cases. I remmember the hard on people here had for Fielder same thing. Once they get there money, food consumption goes way up.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 The first round pick is significant. Its not a first round pick. Its after everyone has picked in the first round, thus it can't be a first round pick. Any draft pick will not have an impact on this team in the next five years, and most of the fanbase is sick of waiting.

Just because you wanted melky doesn't make it any less significant

Melky $14M and the loss of a pick, no thanks.

Well since teams lose their first rounders to sign guys attached to the QO there is a decent chance it will be in the first 30 picks. I think right now it is at 31 but say NYY signs Scherzer then it would move up to 30. What a stupid post.
Key22 Verified Member Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 I don't have a problem with the Jays saying let's get Saunders, Smoak, Estrada and a draft pick and ($8million) - for Melky, Lind, and Happ ($28 million). But the on field talent of the latter is arguably superior to the former. It's not $20 million better however. Nevertheless, I wish AA and the Jays money holders would decide if we're going to be in or we're going to be out. A team with 25th worst bullpen is going to have a tough time making the playoffs in the AL East. And that was 25th with Graveman, McGowan, Sanchez, Santos, and Jansen (Sanchez is now penciled into the rotation). So a 25th place bullpen lost all those guys and replaced them with - zilch. And none of the remaining free agents seem all that helpful. Ie - they could resign Jansen and they'd still be worse than they were last year. 2b is still a pile of poo CF is questionable albeit liveable (can have one black hole spot in the order) 1B is questionable if Smoak is the first baseman. Still no Ace and still no number 2 starter I like the Donaldson move - getting a stud with 4 years of control - like Martin - pricey but influencial. You got EE and Bautista under two nice years of cost control. Maybe the Jays have 3-4 studs in the minors ready to be elite shut down pen arms by April - but for the love of all that is holy - someone tell me WHO they are? Because you knwo the Jays' luck - Cecil's arm will blow up on day one and be out for the year - then what?

I remmember the hard on people here had for Fielder same thing. Once they get there money, food consumption goes way up. The funny thing is that I don't completely disagree with you, and I'm the one that in the past has posted the aging curve for "heavy" players vs. the average player. Heavy players drop off after 30 is greater...but 33 is actually the age where the drop is most significant. For the record Melky does not qualify as "heavy" for this study. http://cdn.fangraphs.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Curve2.jpg The reason I responded is that you made such a BS statement and I called you out on it. Much the same way you said that I posted HOF'ers when in reality more than half the list isn't in the hall. Talk ******** and someone will likely call you out. I've also mentioned in posts that I think occasionally JFaS should explain his "absolute" comments that he does as there are a lot of posters that don't understand why he thinks "1st rounder + Smoak > Melky". I understand it's based on value and projections but there are still a lot of people that could use educating on this subject.
