Laika Community Moderator Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 They're still so far from the playoffs though IMO. 2B, C, RF, 3B all suck. Melky and LaRoche are overrated, league average players at best. All of their SP depth is crud past the top 3. All of their RP suck after the two FA signings.

labadee Verified Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 f***! I hate the whitesox. f*** you, Ken harrelson, just because.

Yeah it's pretty funny to see all the guys on MLB network talk about how the Whitesox will be competing for the division title. I just don't see it.

They're paying for 2015-2017 Melky. 6 WAR in 3 seasons would be like, an 80th percentile outcome for Chicago.
Key22 Verified Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 As an aside to draft pick compensation - is there any particular reason for not changing to draft pick trading? Would this not make for more excitement for fans at the trade deadline. Jeff Blair noted on the fan 590 that the Jays' brass should not have publicly stated that they have a 5 year policy on signing players - have the policy - fine but stating it publicly ruins the fan base's "hope" that you will land the big fish. I mean plenty of teams don;t sign guys to 7 year deals - so all of those teams without a guy on the book for more than 5 years may have a similar internal policy. Draft pick trading in Hockey is quite entertaining as you watch teams trade a player plus their own pick to another team to get a higher spot on the list. They could do away with sandwich picks and for that matter compensation picks. The players union would be on board with that and the teams should be on board with it because it is more in line with capitalism of deciding your own fate rather than the socialism model of being compensated by the league because you're too cheap to pay your free agent.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 I even think he'll regress but saying "league average at best".... just seems inept Melky just had a 2.5 WAR season, and he's exiting his prime, so one could see how someone that was a bit above average might regress to being league average.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 3/43.5 is actually a pretty good deal for the White Sox. Even if his defense sucks he is still a great hitter.

He's still easily worth the contract. Tumour aside he has been pretty durable throughout his career and his bat doesn't lose much value as a DH.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 I'm not a huge fan of Melky and wasn't too concerned about bringing him back but 3 for 45 seems fair for both parties.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Pick + Saunders + Estrada > Melky + Happ? Not on the field but yes in accounting
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Good to see the Jays read the market well on this one.

JP Ricciardi would have been trading first round picks for the Brad Wilkersons of the world. Draft pick trading is great when you're GETTING the picks, but when your GM trades 3 picks for Phil Kessel, maybe you should be against that sort of thing.

How's it different than trading 1 or 3 prospects for a player though? I guess you're saying teams should be protected from their own stupidity.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Get rid of No Trade clause's first, or amend it ! Compensation to teams by the player to be paid to the teams they add to thier no trade list! 5% of thier salary per season for the first 4 adds, 10% for every add after four goes to a pool of funds and is paid out to the teams in reverse order on percentage. Ie the total fund reaches 10 mill and the jays are on 60 percent of players list jays receive 6 mill . Then fix the luxury tax so that for every dollar over you pay 5 dollars in penalty tax. After 10 mill over the fine doubles! So the first ten would cost a team 50 mill in tax, teams in division receive 75 percent of fund. Teams in league receive the remaining 25 percent! Ie Yankees and Boston both go over by a mill each, both pay in 5 mill each total 10 mill. So the jays rays and Orioles would get 2.5 mill each ! Then fix the international signing, when 2 teams have almost 20 of the top 30 players according to the mlb list I would say the system is beyond a lil f***ing broken !

Explain the concept of "exiting his prime" please. I might be missing something but he just had an above average season at the age of 29/30. I'm sure we don't need to point out the plethora of players who have had their best years 28+..
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Pretty good contract by the white sox, hope he does well for them. Glad he didn't go somewhere in our division.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 Putnam and Jones are decent. They also have Rodon as a decent #4. the AL Central has some pitching (3 teams have 10 win Staffs by Steamer). If some of the young pitching (there isn't that much of it though) step up it could be a huge jump Tigers Price, Sanchez, Verlander, Greene & Simon (with Buck Farmer as depth) Indians Kluber, Carrasco, Salazar, House, Bauer (average age of 26.5, McAlister, Tomlin in the pen as depth, I expect Ryan Merritt to be a September contribution too...can you tell I'm huge on the Indians again this year) White Sox Sale, Samardzija, Quintana, Danks, Noesi (Putnam, Montas, Rodon, Johnson as depth). Then there are the Royals (who's bullpen counts as one great starter) and Twins (who could be okay by the end of the year). Best pitching division in baseball

Melky's best seasons came when he was 26 and 27 years old. Obviously we don't know for sure that he's done his peak, but based on the performance curve of an average player, his best seasons are likely behind him. The average players peak in their mid to late 20s. That's just our best guess, and anyone's best guess really. It's not absolutely going to be true. The fact that Melky had an excellent looking season where he basically maxed out his hitting abilities, tagging almost everything, and he was still only slightly above average in total value... doesn't really bode well for his future value IMO.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 That Indians staff is killer. It's the one that could go horribly wrong too though (I don't think so but what do I know).

flafson Verified Member Posted December 14, 2014 Posted December 14, 2014 So now that Melky is gone, how exactly do they decide which supplemental pick we get? There are something like 15 picks due to free agency, how do they decide which team gets what?
