Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 The thing that scares me is that he has had a tendency to really overpay for relievers in the past. I hope he's evolved past that point. For all the great he's done this offseason, he has yet to deal for a reliever, so we've yet to see if he's smartened up in that regard. He likes cost control which is why he traded for RP rather than signing them to big contracts. I'm not against this model as long as funds are being allocated to other areas of need.
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 AA needs to do some ninja things. Holland would be excellent. A closer is important if we actually plan on being good.

Snider for Lyon, even though it doesn't look hideous in hindsight, was a bad trade. Napoli for Francisco, no matter when you look at it, was a really bad trade. Francisco Cordero on a 4.5M contract was a bad signing. I'm one of AA's biggest supporters, but his track record in acquiring relievers is really not the best.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Please no. I'm not a fan of pitchers that walk batters at a 6bb/9ip rate. We already have an Axford clone in Delabar. My feeling is that if you get him in the 1 to 1.5M range, then one of he or Delabar probably bounce back and have a nice season. Axford's Steamer projection (which I think is broken for playing time with relievers), has him at 3.36 FIP and 3.5BB/9, which is pretty decent.

If we could get him for a million I'd be fine with that. And if he had to earn a spot in spring training. He's shouldn't be expected to hold a spot in the pen heading into ST though.

No one knew what Gomes would become, most people pegged him as a career backup at best. As for Aviles, sure he would have been a useful piece, but he's kinda been aweful for a few seasons now, so it's not like he has any real value anyways other than positional versatility. Napoli for Francisco was a bad trade, I agree with that. Also Cordero was a dumb signing at the time as well and he was horrific to add to that. That being said RP is so volatile that his shaky track record in that area does not really concern me much. He seems to be back at targeting good value players and I see no reason why this won't also translate to the pen.

I think Holland would be nice, but from the Royals perspective, why would they trade the guy? They made the playoffs last year so they are going to want major league ready talent, not prospects. They don't need Navarro. What else do we want to part with? I'm all for flipping Navarro and Pillar for Holland, but I somehow doubt that will get it done..lol.

The Royals have some payroll issues, and Holland should be in the 7-8M range this year (guessing), and same for Wade Davis. They don't want to trade them, but they may have to part with one.
Westfan Verified Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Building bull pens are almost as big a crap shoot as the draft. Does Neshek have another career year in him? Does Gregerson finally break down? How does a Mariano Rivera manage to be so consistent and a Jim Johnson so bi polar. How do the Tigers keep screwing it up? War thinks little of bull pens but ask Tiger fans how important they feel BP,s can be. Who is the next Pat Neshek? Best scenario I see is build your own out of failed starters but I see little hope in the Drabeks we have. Only thing I hope for is AA to get lucky and Delabar to come back strong.

I'll pay 15 mil for the next 2 yeas of Holland.

Trading an asset for a couple of very, very expensive years of a closer seems wrong to me. He'll every one likes Holland but do they like him 9 mil worth.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Can the thread title be changed to G. Holland so that no one (like me) thinks we're talking D. Holland?

I'd happily take 9M + 12M? of Holland (plus qualifying and getting a draft pick back at the end) over 4 years of Robertson at 12M+ per. It all depends on what the prospect cost is though.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 We should hit up the Mariners again. They have a ton of nice bullpen arms. Rodney, Medina, Furbush, Smith, Maurer, Leone, Farquhar. I'm not sure of what their other needs are though.

Nox Verified Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Trading for relievers rarely works out for the simple reason we have very little idea who is going to be a good reliever in 2 years. Hard to imagine a trade for Holland that I would like.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Ugghhh...much cheaper options. Ogando and Crain AA, now go sign McCarthy and Lowrie.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Grilli, Ogando, Crain. Sign all three of them. It's not going to cost more than $10M combined, most likely. Do it.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Elliot says he'd consider Norris for Holland. McCowan say no f***ing way....on prime time sports right now.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 How is Bob Elliot still employed? Norris for Holland is disgusting and his writing is pretty awful.
