TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 So basically, Angelos is shamelessly implying that he's going to do everything he can to force Duquette to stay. A lot of his comments really come off in a "we own you" type of way. Seems like dumb business. If someone genuinely wants to leave for another competitor, why would you force them to stay when you can no longer 100% trust that they'll give their undivided attention to your company? And again, can't Duquette simply resign, if he genuinely wants a job with another team?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 ^^That means nothing. Honoring a contract means abiding by the terms, and if the terms give him an out ... yeah. Things said in the media rarely mean anything, good or bad.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Maybe he will try to get fired by dealing all his good assets to Toronto. Wasn't there a Seinfeld episode like that with George trying to get fired so he could go to the Mets?
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Not overblown Duquette playing it smart. Keeping a lowkey profile

Things said in the media rarely mean anything, good or bad. Yup. Farrell said the exact same things when Boston wanted him. Angelos' statements are just public posturing and nothing more. They are not sincere. DD can still fully honour his contract up until he / the Blue Jays end up making an agreement with Angelos to terminate the contract. These situations always turn out the same. If Duquette really wants to leave, then he's gone. Angelos isn't going to make a guy stay for four more years in an awkward situation. That's not in the best interest of Baltimore either.

Dan can't abandon the Orioles to become Jays GM, but he can abandon the Orioles if another team offers him a better jobs/position.

The more you create perceived value of an asset that you don't need to necessarily get rid of, the more you might be able to extract from the person/team wanting it. Maybe he's playing hardball so he can demand more in compensation? Or the fact is, he could be putting a tough face on so that other teams don't get the impression it's open season on poaching his personnel.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Good riddance to that old, senile turd Beeston! This was long overdue! Hope we can land Duquette. It would be awesome to see the man who built the '94 Expos join the Jays in some capacity.

He didn't deny anything. What I took from his other quotes is that he actually would be very much interested in a promotion of this calibre: "You know the good thing is that baseball is always interesting, if you do a good job there are always opportunities." "I don't know much about the opportunity in Toronto. When the Boston club was being sold, the position was something that I had interest in." People don't often use the word "opportunity" for something they aren't interested in. He also makes sure to point out that he's had interest in this kind of position in the past (with the Red Sox).
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 If we make the playoffs this year are you going to change your username? Yes. Hell, I'd have changed it already but I'm lazy.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 So if a janitor had a 5 year contract with the O's and the Jays offered him the President position, Angelos would for the Custodial Engineer to stay? I don't think so. ...that said, watch the Jays announce that Beeston has signed a 7 year contract with the team. Wtf are you talking about?

So, the Blue Jays are trolling the winter meetings. Would be great if they were using this as a front to make the moves they want without the media releasing rumours about the on-field personnel.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Duquette, Ryan and Williams. 33% chance of not f***ing up.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 This is f***ing hilarious. This has to be the despair job of the decade. The night right before the winter meetings, and all this s*** coming about the Jays possibly poaching every teams head executive. All these fan bases and beat reporters are going to be in panic mode, thinking their teams will be distracted during the meetings instead of focusing on their clubs.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Mike Berardino Sources: #MNTwins GM Terry Ryan is on the #BlueJays radar again as potential president/CEO. Terry Ryan and his 88 Mph policy!!
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Whats next, were looking to hire Ruben Amaro Jr. as president? lol
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Duquette, Ryan and Williams. 33% chance of not f***ing up. I don't see why Ryan would be a bad President. Baseball guy who commands a lot of respect around the league with a long track record of success as a GM in Minnesota. I'd feel a lot more comfortable with him than with Beeston.

I haven't really liked the teams he's overseen. Duquette is a lot better imo.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 I haven't really liked the teams he's overseen. Duquette is a lot better imo. Meh, maybe. Ryan commands huge respect around the league and ran a tight ship for a decade in Minnesota. If you said last week that Beeston would be replaced with a guy like that, we'd be thrilled. Huge, huge step up from Godfrey and Beeston IMO.
43211234 Verified Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 You have to wonder if the Blue Jays are trying to go with the super-front-office thing that the Dodgers and Cubs did, or if they are going with a more traditional role for the President/CEO. If it's the former, Kenny Williams coming up is terrifying.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 That's a bluejays policy not a major league policy True, but it's widely accepted a dick move to not let your guys Interview for promotions with other teams. Yes it can't be an official MLB policy, but all teams pretty much allow it.

So much worse with Jerry as showrunner. I just knew after watching that video that the episode would be from the 8th season.

You as a baseball fan have a different idea in terms of what you respect vs. who baseball executives respect. Beeston was the president of Major League Baseball. President.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Could someone please explain what the team's president job is? For all i know he just sits on those big TD comfort chairs with his weird glasses and smiles. Oh, and the GM calls him right after he made a move. You forgot smoke cigars (inside the office) and drink with his old buddies and political friends.
