TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Given what Bob McCown has said, I really think all of the cards are falling into place. I am not drunk, nor have I been smoking anything, but I have a feeling this may happen. We are currently $19 Million below our $137million payroll of last year, and if you believe Beeston that the payroll is going up, say $5M, thats $24 Million left to spend. If we do 6 years 135, we could bring in Lester on a lower 2015 (Say $15Mil), leaving $9mil + any salary relief from trading Navarro + a possible Dickey move to fill the bullpen holes. Buehrle comes off the books after this season, so the rest of the 'backloaded' Lester salary can slot in there at $24mil, so only a $5 mil raise over Buerhle, and we get a legit ace who has had success in the AL East, and lending credibility to Rogers ownership, which wants to 'woo' the public with its sports properties (according to bobcat). The 5-year policy is still in place, according to AA last week, but if Rogers wants to meddle, and McCown says they do, I can see extending the limit one year happening. This may be wishful thinking, but I am starting to see this happening.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 i'd probably take a liriano at 12-13 mill and a miller for 4/40 over lester.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Probably better to spend it on a 2nd tier guy like McCarthy than sign Lester for 6 years.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Lester is probably gonna get 7 years and 160-170, why would anyone want that obligation for aging pitcher
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Possibly, but keep your eyes on McCarthy or Liriano(Martin tie), acquiring a guy like Lowrie short term.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 AA will trade for Latos or sign Liriano/Volquez
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Who cares about Lester right now? MAPLE SAUNDERS.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 AA will trade for Latos or sign Liriano/Volquez Latos is a good buy low candidate but no real prospects should be involved
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Out of the names that we know are available, nothing makes more sense than a 1-year "I need to re-establish my value to prove my s*** and stuff" deal for Medlen.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Brandon McCarthy plz. Saves some money and you can still get Lowrie for not a lot.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 There's criticism over almost any top name free agent and the contract the receive. Lester will be over 30 but has a track record of pitching plenty of innings and also in the AL East. I'm sure there's more "efficient" ways to spend dollars, but the truth is the Jays lack a proven top of the rotation pitcher. I'd splurge on Lester before paying an older and less impressive James Shields.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Brandon McCarthy plz. Saves some money and you can still get Lowrie for not a lot. I do still love McCarthy, but I like Medlen on a 1-year more than I like McCarthy on a 3-4 year, especially if the Yankees are in on the bidding for the latter. I'd be equally happy with Lowrie and Weeks at 2B, though I do like Lowrie a bit more. Plus there'd be the added insignificance of him having been on the same diamond as Donaldson last year, and the hilarity that would follow having "Lowrie" come in after "Lawrie" went out. Just think of all the bad puns and name jokes.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Please god no. Other than salary/contract, why not Lester?
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 We are currently at $125.7 million with the arb values on mlbtr and including Romero.
Blitz Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I would take Lester on a 5yr deal, or Shields on a 4yr deal as a #1 for sure.... Liriano and McCarthy are both kinda intriguing as a #3 guy though. Can I have one of each of a #1 & a #3?

Peter Gammons @pgammo Laugh @"mystery teams," surprise but 3 GMs think there is a serious new entrant on Lester. Must work with Pediatric Cancer Foundation
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Trade 4 Hamels If your going to pay a lefty pitcher that much money for that much term, why not just sign Lester who is proven in the AL East and keep your prospects?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 If your going to pay a lefty pitcher that much money for that much term, why not just sign Lester who is proven in the AL East and keep your prospects? Exactly this How can people miss the common sense. If you are going to pay a lefty this much, why wouldn't you just sign the superior healthier Lester
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Only way Ruben gets rid of Hamels salary is he gives him away for a middling couple of prospects
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Salary/contract way more than actual value. What do you think of de la Rosa from the Rocks?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Salary/contract way more than actual value. I think he would still be worth his salary until about the last year or two of his contract.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Trade 4 Hamels That would probably be the last thing I want them to do. Hamels is making free agent money and RAJ will ask for too much.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Out of the names that we know are available, nothing makes more sense than a 1-year "I need to re-establish my value to prove my s*** and stuff" deal for Medlen. That's the first thing I thought yesterday when I heard about this. I'd be all for it.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 AA is in the f***ing ninja zone, count nothing out at this point! Matt Harvey was injured, bring him on board for izturis. Fernandez likely won't sign in Florida so might as well give them Navarro for him.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 @ChrisCotillo: Sources: #Dodgers may be willing to make Zack Greinke available in trade talks with opt-out next year looming http://t.co/TiCUqJ9IWO Ok fine, Greinke.

FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 I can't understand how this board can turn up their nose at Lester but drool over a playoff choker like Shields.
tpurewal97 Verified Member Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Kris Medlen anyone ?? 1 or 2 year deal , could be a low risk high reward type of signing Stroman Dickey Medlen Buehrle Hutchison
