Ultimate Verified Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 During the season last year I would have said "no way" to bringing back Colby, partly because I thought he was going to get a big contract and because we had other options for CF. But now I am thinking that if his market value came down far enough I would not be opposed to him returning. If you had Rasmus in CF, you could slide the Pompey/Pillar competition to LF. -The overall outfield defense would be much better than with Melky or most of the other alternatives in LF. -Rasmus would provide us with a much needed Left handed bat. -He had a bad year last year but his numbers weren't as bad as a lot of people think they were. Was still better than league average with an OPS+ of 104 -I think the injuries, lost playing time had some impact on his numbers last year. If he got back to his 2013 level it would be a bargain. -Certainly reasonable to expect him to produce halfway between his 2013 and 2014 levels with an OPS of around .790. Most of the LF options we are considering won't come close to that. -He has been better than Markakis the last 2 years and will cost much less in term and AAV If he would sign a 2 year deal at 7-9 million per year, would you consider it? I know there used to be some rules against resigning one of your own players in which you did not provide with a qualifying offer. I don't believe those rules exist anymore.
Governator Community Moderator Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 No and I named my son after him.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Better option than Saunders, Aoki, Fowler, Markakis for LF. But he won't come back. He'll want to be as far from Toronto as possible.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 I would be really happy if Colby signed a one year pillow contract to play LF. We really need another left handed bat. With that said....he's not coming back.
43211234 Verified Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Yes but it's not going to happen.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 I like him, but he doesn't like Canada.
Ultimate Verified Member Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 Refresh my memory. What did he say/indicate about not liking Canada?

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 We want to sign a LF with at least a 33% on base rate not a 33% K rate. And he still managed to put up a 103 wRC+.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 U think Rasmus wants to come back to play for gibbons after he was stapled to the bench in September of his UFA offseason? I don't
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 For sure. Better than paying for Cabrera, Markakis plus I don't want them to give up anymore legit prospects.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 It's unfortunate the Jays pissed him off after they were out of it. Rasmus as a lefthanded bat somewhere between Bautista, EE, and Donaldson could be something else. He'll get plenty of pitches to hit, but his IQ might not let him take advantage.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Well I doubt that's even a possibility, they benched him for a reason. Jays will explore their present players before ever considering him. He's done forever as a Blue Jay so let it go.

I find it interesting that Rasmus has generated so little discussion from the fan base when Melky, a flawed player in his own right, has generated tons of discussion, to the point where some people go far as to gauge the whole success of the offseason on whether or not he's brought back (a notion so ridiculous it makes me angry). Anyways, Rasmus makes a kind of sense on paper. He's a bounce back candidate, he bats left, he plays CF but he's basically worn out his welcome. He's was just so worthless this year. The CF defense isn't even good anymore and the bat doesn't play anywhere else. I'm curious to see where he ends up and how much money he makes.

I think his play pissed up the Jays first. Let's face it, for all the upside he has, you just cannot rely on him from year to year. He's like an injury-prone player, except he's inconsistency-prone
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 He was as good as gone when he was benched for all of September.

You are right about the inconsistency but he still provides value as a maddening underachiever. As far as the benching goes, there's a saying "don't burn your bridges"

labadee Verified Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 nah, i think that ship has sailed. The O's are considering him as an option though
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Absolutely not!
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 As far as the benching goes, there's a saying "don't burn your bridges" Yeah I didn't care for the benching. It seemed like an unnecessary humiliation for a veteran player. So he was late one day? Big whoop. Sit him one game. Make sure he knows why he was benched and move on. Gibby seems like he holds grudges and I'm not a fan of that.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 If Colby doesn't have a job and the Jays don't have a suitable replacement, why not? Not sure if his brain works this way, but he's gotta see the team is serious about contending now. And relative to St. Louis he's had a good time here not being under too much of a microscope. If he was coming from another team for a fresh start, half the people saying no would probably say yes to taking a flier on him.

Another bit of drama that could have been avoided.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 No, he wouldn't come back here, for all the money in the world.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 He was benched in favor of Kevin Pillar in the final month of the season before hitting free agency. He's not going to come back.
Travis_Snider Verified Member Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 I would like him back, but no way in hell he signs here after September.
