And what is the point of winning the division only to have no shot in the playoffs? This team in the playoffs will be at a disadvantage in the playoffs..... It's not just about the east. because other teams have s***** staffs it is OK we do?? LOL that loser mentality.

I forget what the playoffs feel like. Many posters have never experienced the playoffs because they are too young. You always have a shot if you make the playoffs....I would consider making the playoffs a huge successful season even if they lost out right away....I know some would disagree. I can understand either opinion. It just depends on your personality.

Any team has a shot once they get in the playoffs, not to mention what a playoff appearance would do for this city and this organization. This city went mental in the early 90s, and I'd love to see that again.

Does scientificreason=oldskool=coolerheadsprevail??

What a bunch of ********. Teams win for lots of reason. The last time I saw my team win a world series they had Todd Stottlemyer, the ghost of Dave Stewart, and Juan Guzman (who walked 100 that year), Pat Hentgen too I guess. But he wasn't that good... he went 19-9 because the Jays scored lots of runs.

That year the white sox had the Cy Young award winner, and two other good starting pitchers. Clearly better then Toronto's. Yet Toronto won the ALCS.

What a bunch of ********. Madison Bumgarner isn't quite an ace... he's good. But given the lower offense and his park he isn't an ace. Not like Clayton Kershaw anyway. Clayton Kershaw is an ace. But Bumgarner was awesome in the playoffs. Cause he has "the clutch" or something.

What if Stroman has the "clutch"??? That would mean WORLD SERIES. So f*** this stupid scientificreason and his "aces" theory. THAT IS COMPLETELY UNSCIENTIFIC.

I am going with the scientific "clutch" theory, and I think Stroman might have "the clutch", which would mean a world series victory even if Stroman isn't an ace!!!

(Sorry about the typos, grammer and spelling, worse then even my usual, don't really have time for this right now... but that post by scientificreason got me going).

Once you're in, anything is possible. Seriously, look at the KC Royals. Barely squeaked in and made it all the way to the WC. Just need to get hot at the right time

I love how people keep bring up KC to somehow prove that the Jays don't really need a proven frontline starter. The Royals actually did have Shields along with the best BP in the game and had basically everything go their way and still couldn't win it all simply because the other team possessed a superior pitcher in Bumgarner. If history proves anything it's the fact that pitching is key in the playoffs and you'll be hard pressed to find any championship teams over the last decade with a weaker top of the rotation than Dickey, Stroman and Hutch.

Shields was awful in the playoffs. Thats what people are saying. Just because you have a frontline starter doesn't mean they are guaranteed to pitch like it in the post season. Kershaw was bad in his playoff appearances as well so we need to get over the fact that pitching is never automatic and a lot of it just comes down to luck.

I'd take my chances with Lester who's been there/done that then count on luck with Dickey when the season is on the line.

Pitching isn't automatic but it still makes the biggest difference in the playoffs and having dependable horses in front of your rotation will increase your chances SIGNIFICANTLY!!!

A. Getting to the playoffs is the main concern

B. Steamer has Marcus Stroman as being an equivalent pitcher to Madison Bumgarner. (3.4 WAR/200 IP)

A. A proven frontline starter will also help achieve that goal.

B. Stroman is the only starter with any upside and he's far from a proven commodity.

Okay. Ill take my chances a decent 2B helping the team get to the playoffs than relying on Izturis/Goins.

Not really.

hutch had a 3.85 fip with a 2.6 war and struck out a batter per inning.. at age 23...in one of the toughest hitters parks in the majors... first year coming back from tommy john surgery...

and you're saying he has no upside?

pretty ignorant statement imo

Posted
He posted a 3.59 SIERA at the age of 23 with one of the worst framers in baseball catching him. Tell me how he doesn't have considerable upside.

i think the term 'considerable' is selling him short. he has massive upside imo, and smokey needs to start looking players outside his ERA-tinted glasses

Tell that to oakland

Don't get me wrong, I see him as a decent number 3 and Stroman and a decent number 2 but relying on those two to carry the team is asking for too much.

lol so by "upside" you mean literally contending for the cy young?

because a #3 starter at age 24 in this ballpark in this division is actually a really big deal.

Smokey backtracking, lmao

Saying he's a decent number 3 is backtracking?? lol

You just got f***ing told by JFaS, after saying Hutch has no upside, and now you are crawling back saying he is a decent #3 (with obviously, the upside for more).

Posted
... to be counted on as a frontline starter.

No. You said Stroman is the only starter with upside. JFaS replied saying Hutch also has considerable upside. You said "Not really".
