jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Yeah I think if what players posted on Twiitter played a huge role in them being traded, we would have seen so many names moved already. Heck, even what Bautista said after the trade deadline last season. What a player says on Twitter has nothing to do with them being traded. Unless its something really really bad.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 Never would any GM trade an MVP calibre talent because of Twitter. /thread Did you read the article? Donaldson sends out a message basically saying no matter what happens all always love Oakland through good or bad...which is less then 2 weeks ago. I'm not stating they decided the heck with Donaldson he WILL be moved but rather to entertain offers.

I agree with you but every team/owner is different. He may have been more open to the idea after the twitter posts then before... Regardless I found it interesting.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Yeah, a week and a half ago, Donaldson took to twitter and basically openly talked s*** about ownership. It started with some random dude on twitter basically instigating Donaldson by asking how he's so accepting of a league min salary, and that he should push for more. Donaldson playfully (or not?) implied that he would push for higher salary ("you'll see"), probably referring to his upcoming arbitration case. Another random twitter dude implied that he should be happy with a low payroll as long as it saves the team money to pursue other players to build around him, to which Donaldson said that the team had plenty money, and they simply tell everyone that they don't. It's a bit of a clusterf***. Even if everything he's saying is true (it is), it does kinda show that Donaldson is pretty careless when it comes to discussing this kinda stuff openly in public and if he continues to do that, he'll probably rustle some major jimmies in Toronto, given how absolutely f***ing butthurt our media is about everything. Anyway, here are the tweets: A's fans seem to think that Beane has an ego and that he's traded away valuable players because of a clash of egos before. A lot of A's fans actually predicted a Donaldson trade after those tweets and were going on "I-told-you-so" tirades once it happened. I don't really care about it, but if that's what helped us get Donaldson, then great. All I'm hoping for is that Donaldson isn't a pain in the ass when it comes to arbitration. Arb is the dumbest reason for teams and players to develop poor relationships over, and it happens somewhere every year.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 I don't know enough about Donaldson to even try to speculate how he will handle arbitration or the Toronto media however he is coming here with a proven track record with a chip on his shoulder!

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 (edited) u must mean best 3B in baseball, cause hes definitely not the best player in baseball Maybe not even the best 3B to be honest. He's up there, but if Rendon is for real, then there's an argument. People from time to time mention that Beane has an ego. Now whether his ego makes him retarded enough to move the best player in baseball because of a few tweets is another question I feel like this has to be at least a bit of a factor. How else does it make any sense? The A's were adamant that Donaldson wasn't moving, and then he makes a bunch of tweets, and shortly after he's traded? And if this wasn't a factor, and cutting payroll really was the object, then how oh how do you justify signing Country Breakfast for $30M? It's such a weird situation. Alex calls you a few weeks ago, asks Donaldson, you say no. Now Donaldson does something dumb on twitter, ownership is feeling butthurt about it, Alex calls you again, this time you say "okay, well, what exactly did you have in mind?" I dunno, seems plausible. Edited November 30, 2014 by TwistedLogic

So I guess the sentiment in the clubhouse is that the whole twitter thing with Donaldson did play a factor to a certain degree. Oh well, if we see Reddick traded now, it'll probably go a lot further to prove that theory. Or maybe they go out of their way to hang onto him now to try and disprove those rumors. Regardless, if Reddick is on the outs with the A's, I'd welcome him with open arms to Toronto. A's got so many players still that make so much sense for the Jays; Reddick, Moss, Shark, Jaso, list goes on.
flafson Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 He said close to nothing about the ownership, if that was the standard for getting traded they would ban Twitter altogether from any kind of professional sports.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Am I the only one who's really not comfortable with trading anymore prospects? The most valuable prospects are on the cusp of being big league contributors, and the rest of what makes up the Jays farm system seem to be years away and not hold as much value across the league (although Barretto seems to make an exception). Maybe I'm tired and not thinking straight, but a couple more deals (I'm looking at you, Brandon McCarthy and Jed Lowrie) along with putting together a bullpen and this team looks pretty good. I just don't see a scenario where the Jays line up with the Mariners for Saunders that makes sense for both teams. I'd love him (then McCarthy, then Lowrie, in that order), but without a 3rd team not sure how it would get done.

Graveman and Nolin have pretty low ceilings and were college senior signs for like less than 25k IIRC. To even get anything of value drafting in those spots is a huge plus. They were pretty low on the depth chart behind more talented pitchers like Norris and Sanchez and you could afford to lose them since there is tremendous SP prospect depth in the farm system. Lets not forget Osuna, Hoffman and Castro are pretty highly touted so you can bridge the gap leaving Graveman and Nolin expendable. Even with those deals this is still a top 15 farm system and a trade for another couple of mid level prospects still doesn't move the needle too much. Really depends on the deal since there 2 pretty big holes in LF and 2B.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Reddick was pissed last night. Remember this? Stanton after Jays/Miami trade I do remember that, and it's the first thing I thought about when I saw Reddick's tweet. The difference here is that the Marlins have always insisted, every single step of the way, that Stanton was never going anywhere. That was just something people deduced based on everything else that happened. The A's on the other hand seem to be listening on all of their players. I do think it could play a factor, however small it may be, in a potential Reddick move.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Lets just pull off another f***ing blockbuster with the A's. McCarthy + Lowrie + Reddick for Travis + Sanchez + Jiminez + ??? That would solve alot of holes for us. EDIT: on second thought, that's probably an overpay on our side.

AA asked about him a couple months ago, he was not available, and now he is, things changed.

I've said it makes more sense to spend some more money instead of trading prospects when the system has just recovered from the Marlins and Mets trades. Nolin and Graveman weren't high ceiling guys, but they provided starting pitching depth for the MLB team and could've ended up as relievers as well. I hated to see Barreto go, but I can see how a prospect like him needed to be included in the deal. This was by no means a fleecing, IMO, as I think Oakland got valuable starting pitching depth plus a good 3b in Lawrie with some nice upside and still just 25. No doubt the farm took a hit, especially with Barreto gone. On the other hand, with a full season from guys like Hoffman, Pentecost, SRF, Osuna and Clinton Hollon, the system should get a boost next year. We'll see what happens.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Everything I've read about Donaldson is that he's completely honest, to a point where a team/fans might think of him as outspoken. Very much like the Jays already have with Bautista. And believe me with Donaldson's backstory (Daddy in prison until 2013, every male role model on his Fathers side dead or in prison, discarded as not going to make it many times. Even the way he asked them to try him at third in training camp when Sizemore got hurt), it's a Sportsnet 30 minute special ready to happen. The guy is a work ethic machine and if things go badly on a PR side, all the focus will go on to how hard Donaldson pushes and is pushing everyone else. Much like Dickey at the start of 2013, the guy is your PR golden boy.
