Statman Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Just played a game of The Show: 14 with Donaldson at 3rd, Stroman (pure analog controls) on the mound and letting Martin call the game...freaking sweet!
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 One of the most positive aspects of the 2 moves by the Jays is that they've upgraded at 2 positions where conventional wisdom would claim they didn't need to upgrade. This is reflected in the reaction by a lot of fans who actually criticized AA for signing Martin by saying things like "the Jays already had Navarro at C, they should've spent that money on Melky". In terms of what the Jays gave up, I really like Lawrie and think he'll be a good player for the A's. I certainly wish him well. Like many others, I also hated to see Barretto go, however, lower level prospects don't hold a lot of value. I also think the A's will get some good value out of Nolin and Graveman, just like the Jays did since they were 6th and 8th round draft picks and have now been used in a package for one of the top players in the game.

But they still have plenty of holes that's the problem. They need another reliever, a closer, a LF and ideally a starter. 2B/CF could be filled with Pompey/Travis. You don't need an all star at every position. But the yanks will have a solid starting rotation when they most likely sign Scherzer. I think it will be harder to get a quality starter in a trade, a true #1 like a Lester. I would prioritize the needs as, Starter, Closer, LF, reliever, 2b. Travis should be at least capable of fielding balls and hitting his weight at 2B. I know, you guys hate to have Goins at 2b, but there will always be a couple of weak hitters in the lineup, as long as they can field and put balls in play. Buerhle at 35, most likely will regress, regardless who is catching him. That's what baseball players do when they age, it's a fact, Martin can frame all he wants, but at some point, velocity drops too much, their arms get tired quicker, it's just the name of the game. Dickey is 40 years old, another wild card for this year. If they Jays want to not do things half ass this time, they have to have Lester or Shields signed.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 On this forum? I saw a couple, but I meant more on the comments section of articles reporting about the signing.. I saw some suggest Martin was signed 'cause he was Canadian and such.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 The winter meetings haven't even started yet, lol. 3 trades(one massive) and a Major FA signing and it's the 29th of November, it's NOT ENOUGH!!!! *runs from the falling sky*

The key thing here is that a month into the off season, the Jays have improved the team without adding a ton of payroll. I think they've put themselves in a position where they can focus on addressing the remaining holes without feeling the pressure of having to add over 5 winz to the roster. We'll see if they end up trading Navarro and what they end up getting for him, if anything.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Also, if/when this "window" closes, Donaldson could be dealt before for a prospect or 2 barring a catastrophic decline.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Nope, never. Only that one when I made my debut in the IBL at the age of 18, and that other time I moved to Missouri when I was 19 to play NCAA ball for 5 years (red shirt freshman). Other than that, never played. I guess that explains why you're probably working at McDonald's now.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Brett Lawrie, In Memoriam Gonna miss Lawrie's passion, energy... not going to deny it.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Projections are much less reliable when dealing with young / old players.
S33n Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I guess that explains why you're probably working at McDonald's now. I'm probably "working at McDonalds" because you now know I have (at the very least) an undergraduate degree? Excellent deduction.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I'm probably "working at McDonalds" because you now know I have (at the very least) an undergraduate degree? Excellent deduction. And your deductive reasoning tells you there's no difference playing baseball at varied energy / concentration levels. Trying to hit a pitch / catch a grounder while fatigued or rested or amped up is apparently all the same to you. That education sure paid off for you.

You don't need an all star at every position to win the world series. You don't even need the better team on paper. Right now, Boston is still the vegas favorite of winning the world series, at 8:1. I just wouldn't get overly excited until we see what other moves Boston/NY and the Jays make. I think they are still a couple of players away from being a favorite for a playoff spot.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Wow us again with your negative feedback loop nonsense. Hey look everybody it's the guy that cheats on his wife because "she lets him"...

I don't think anyone is saying that "the playoffs will be easy to make", it's just that it's a real positive to get guys like Martin and Donaldson. Also, take the Vegas odds with a grain of salt since the Jays were favored to win their division in 2013. Remember, it's a month into the off season and I think we can expect a couple of more moves to round out the roster.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 She "cheats" on me, too. And we "cheat" together. But it's not cheating if there's no expectation of, nor desire for, monogamy, in a purely sexual sense of the term. We're absolutely ecstatic about being with one another ... after 17 years. 100% partners in what is a legitimate partnership. In a world of high divorce rates and children born out of wedlock, we're quite happy knowing that we are completely dedicated to one another and just happen to get off by occasionally having sex involving other people. It's a positive feedback loop. You're so defeated. you aren't much of a man if your okay with your woman sleeping with another man irrelevant of circumstances
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 you aren't much of a man if your okay with your woman sleeping with another man irrelevant of circumstances Sounds like a healthy relationship. He's a real winner that guy.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 You mean "you're" and "regardless," not "your" and "irrelevant." Real men use proper grammar. "Your woman." As if she's a possession. So limited. And she sleeps with other women, too. So, there's that. Real men leave a place once they've been told no one wants them there

I seem to recall the BLUE JAYS being the vegas favourites in 2012, how did that turn out?
