Fangraphs article on Donaldson's defense

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-thing-about-josh-donaldsons-defense/

He gets nearly all his defensive value from his range. His throwing can be problematic. Worse than E5 problematic.

The thing that concerns me is that EE is terrible at catching the ball at 1B. Just by the eye test he would miss a lot of scoopable balls at 1B which could be a problem of Donaldson shorthops the ball a lot. Wonder how good Smoak is at scooping the ball?

Smoak and Valencia were both better than EE/Lind at 1b. (Although it was a small sample size for Valencia)

Everyone hates the Lind trade now, but really the goal of this club was to get better defensively, and Lind was overpaid for what would essentially amount to a platoon DH.

EE has publicly stated his preference to remain the DH. i really dont think this is difficult to figure out at all, further acquisitions aside, Smoak/Valencia will be platooning at 1b.

Lind was not overpaid. 1.6 wins for 7 million is pretty good value. Especially when you can have that bat in the middle of all of those RH hitters. Donaldson murders LHP and since the As lineup was mostly LH he would get more opportunities to hit LHP than he will in Toronto with all the RH hitters.

I've really been losing respect for Bob Ryan this OS with some of his interviews about the Red Sox acquisitions. Seems really out of touch.

Too bad as I loved Bob Ryan.

Im not a fan. He refuses a lot of newer things/ideas because he is old and stubborn and thats not the way he is used to. He also is getting hard to understand because he can barely talk without stuttering.

Team that likes to win = trades best player away.

I knew that POS was going to say just that.

FY Lawrie. I'm glad we got rid of that idiot.

an attempt to recant his statement..?

Yes, that was 1 1/2 hour later after his first statement. He probably got a call from his mother who told him to fix it.

He's a moron.

omg quite makin a big deal of nothing..

is he lying? No he is not. Lind said something similar last year and everyone applauded him.

Grow up you hyprocrites.

All this fuss being made about the being part of a winner statement that the statement he made about being excited to join a team with leaders who take charge goes under the radar. That is the one everyone should be focused on (even if you don't believe in that stuff)

?? How do you know the team does not "WANT to win'?? It is an idiotic thing to say and a cliche way of taking a shot at your team. I have seen athletes say this numerous times, it's pathetic.

So he threw some teammates under the bus....thats even worse lol. How does he know the dynamic of the A's clubhouse yet?

I'm not a huge Brett Lawrie fan, but I don't see what the big deal is. The Jays haven't made the playoffs in a long time and the A's have. He's going to a situation where he's being asked to replace a guy who is much better than him, and is understandably trying to say things that will endear him to Oakland fans who are most likely pretty jaded by this deal.

He also made an eloquent shout out to the Toronto fans. If this is his "miffed" reaction to being dealt, it's pretty tame, by Brett Lawrie standards.

A classy person wouldn't have made those comments and would have remained professional, but we all know that Lawrie is nothing but a moron and one of the clowns that was on the team, glad he's gone. AA is doing a good job in cleaning up the clubhouse. Just my own opinion.

To me it seems like he's mostly stating fact; the A's have won and made the playoffs recently, the Jays have not. To me it sounds like he's praising the A's more than he's dissing the Jays. Sure, maybe he could have left out the "I haven't been on that side of the coin" part, but is it really a surprise to anyone that the Jays haven't played meaningful baseball in 21 years? Not really.

I agree. He chose his words poorly but he is not and has never been an eloquent guy. I'm comfortable giving him the benefit of the doubt but those who want to hate him will not be so generous.

I like your signature quote KingKat. Love our top 5 batting order, will make the other teams drool. And like he said, he's not done yet. He wasn't talking like that last year.

The last two deadlines Bautista had thrown managment under the bus. Were you bitching about that? how about when casey did it? how about when Lind did it? 3 players that were with the team that took shots at managment. There's something clearly wrong there.

Lawrie said it AFTER he was traded, just pure nastiness from his part. But I didn't expect anything different from him, he's just a boy that has a lot of growing up to do.

I didn't find it nasty. You are over reacting.

did he slam five redbulls before his interview? that kid is too hyper for baseball. I don't see him ever being a great hitter with his hyperactive approach at the plate. great defender though.
