Pete_7 Verified Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 According to two sources, the A’s are getting calls about their left-handed hitters, including Jaso, who was recently cleared for all activity after missing the end of the season with a concussion for the second year in a row. Toronto has some interest in Jaso as a potential backup for Russell Martin, and the A’s have inquired about Blue Jays left-hander Sean Nolin, sources said. http://www.sfgate.com/athletics/article/A-s-add-Ike-Davis-to-their-first-base-options-5913076.php
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Jaso for Nolin. Sign me up.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 An on-base monster who can be a regular DH and maybe play a little 1B on occasion to spell EE? Yes! Make the deal! Nolin's never going to amount to anything in Toronto.. he's better suited for the big park in Oakland. Just keep him away from C.. he's had a lot of concussion issues.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 He is pretty bad behind the plate but is a good hitter vs RHP. Not sure why we traded Lind as Lind is much better at filling that role than Jaso.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Why trade Lind if you're going to trade for Jaso? I guess he can back-up Martin as well as DH, but he's not a good defensive catcher and his skill is exactly the same as the guy you traded a month ago. They can hopefully do better.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Pretty sure we got rid of Lind because the FO didn't like his attitude. (He was calling out the FO on certain issues last year)
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Ya he would fill a very similar role to Lind which would make this a weird transaction ... Reddick however could be pretty great in LF. Huge defensive upgrade.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Always been a fan of Jaso. Underrated. Also, Moss and Reddick are such a good fit for this team.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 As a platoon bat who can hit against RHP as a DH and spell time at 1B and C - I'm in favour.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I'm guessing the Jays wanted to keep Navarro but will accommodate his trade request. Jaso is a pretty similar player.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 He definetely wouldn't be my choice for backup C. Tons of injury concerns there and he is a pretty crappy catcher.

nonamejays Verified Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Legitish, my source has informed me a few times about stuff the A's have done usually a day or two prior to it happening. It's not full proof though as sometimes things do fall through.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Jaso would be a good acquisition. Unlike others, I wouldn't mind him being the backup C as well as the primary DH.

Tough to use your backup C as the primary DH unless you're willing to hit the pitcher in the event of an injury. Possible DH/1B role though I think, hopefully make an upgrade on Thole as the backup.

How often does that happen though? Not enough to even factor it in really IMO. I think it'd give the team a lot of roster flexibility as it basically gives you an extra roster spot - with Jaso among your starting 9 you could then have 4 bench players and none of them would have to be a C.

Not a very good framer, concussion issues. Defense>bat as a back up C. I like him as a left handed OBP option against righties. Career 127 wRC+ vs RHP with a .368 OBP. Slides in nicely between Jose and Edwin.
Dirty SlobberKnocker Verified Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Doesn't look like a good move to make when you look at his pitch framing stats. http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php His pitch framing in the part season he played in for 2014 he was worth about -1.0 WAR.

I don't think he would come to Toronto to catch. He's had concussion issues and like you said isn't a good catcher. His bat could play vs RHP at 1B even though he isn't a traditional 1B. My issue is Lind is a lot better than him so the trade for Estrada was pointless even if Lind isn't the greatest clubhouse guy.

I agree he looks like a great platoon player but I think if he gets more than emergency starts at catcher you can say good bye to most of that production from his bat.

Saves ~3 million for as far as I can tell similar production against LHP. Problem is he too requires a RH bat to platoon with @ DH. Edit: A Jaso/Mayberry platoon might work nicely. L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 But then again, the ~3 million saved from Lind would just be added to Estrada's salary. Jaso and Estrada for Lind and Nolin + (?) essentially?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Years under control? We are talking about 25-30 games behind the dish.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 This move sucks, don't do it! Concussion prone back catcher this is going to end well ? Besides two days ago in my mind we already traded Smoak and Nolin and .... For Justin Morneau !!!
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Jaso would be our third catcher for sure. More of a platoon DH/1B role. He'd be lucky to catch 10 games.
