burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 (edited) Apparently he had surgery to his labrum according to Twitter. Thats terrible news for this year's first round pick. He's not a pitcher at least but as a catcher it is pretty bad since all his value is behind the plate. Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Apparently he had surgery for a partially torn labrum according to Twitter. Thats terrible news for this year's first round pick. He's not a pitcher at least but as a catcher it is pretty bad since all his value is behind the plate. At least it's early in the off-season. He shouldn't miss much development time.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Hopefully they can at least have him DH in 2015 so it's not an entirely lost developmental year...
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Recovery time is 4+ months for a position player when it's the non throwing arm. If it is the throwing arm (probably is), maybe he can just DH in 2015, resume catching development in 2016... Actually nvm. He might be able to catch for a bit in 2015. It depends.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Jesus Flores was diagnosed with a Labrum tear in Sept 2009... glancing at his BR page, you'll notice that he didn't step on the field at all in 2010. s***!
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2014 Author Posted October 20, 2014 Was the surgery recently or in August when he stopped playing October 8 apparently. Aprrently recovery is 4 months FWIW? Edit: It might not be a torn labrum but there was still surgery.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 October 8 apparently. Aprrently recovery is 4 months FWIW? Edit: It might not be a torn labrum but there was still surgery. Partial Labrum surgery, still sounds serious. Hopefully not as serious as a completely torn labrum
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 McCann had arthroscopic surgery a few years ago to fix a partial tear. IIRC he never even missed major time - it just kind of f***ed up his offense for a year or two.
spats Verified Member Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 That's ironic because I just talked to Mel Didier at today's AFL game and asked why Pentecost played very little down the stretch and he said that he had had a long year in ball and his shoulder was sore...did not mention surgery.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Brutal news. Can only hope it is fixed and he can catch at some point next year
43211234 Verified Member Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Finally news about his mysterious injury. I swear LaCava said it was something other than the shoulder in a year end interview. Elbow I think. Found it: http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/farm-report-big-year-for-blue-jays-system/ He said it was a wrist issue and he'd be playing in instructs. Maybe he got the shoulder issue since then, or it was recently diagnosed?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Fully expect terrible news with this organization.

xposbrad Verified Member Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 I tore both my labrums, in the gym and sliding in softball, neither shoulder is 100% and I went to a private doctor here in Montreal. It's not as guaranteed as knee surgery to come back 100%. I can still bench 205-210 right now but I have a lot of discomfort and did plenty of rehab.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Simply not true Seriously. He's drawing comparisons to a Molitor type bat, but all his value is behind the plate? Where do people come up with this s***? Lol..

Laika Community Moderator Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 (edited) Seriously. He's drawing comparisons to a Molitor type bat... Pretty sure this has never happened. Link if I'm wrong. My impression from around the draft was that Pentecost was intriguing because he was a good bet to stick at catcher and be a 50 or 60 grade hitter. So his value seems to very much be tied to whether or not he's a catcher. I was thinking that if he develops, maybe you get something like a Yadier Molina (with 50 grade defense instead of 70). Say, AJ Pierzynski with a league average walk rate. Edited October 21, 2014 by Laika
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 I guess nobody here has been watching the games much in the last few weeks if the season. It was mentioned by Buck and Tabby a couple of times. I don't know, shoot me and get it over with.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Ok, it looks like more of a Jason Kendall. Either way, that's a nice every day tool set if he pans out.

Pentecost has the athleticism to play elsewhere on the field, IIRC there was talk of him potentially being able to play 2B if he were to wash out behind the plate.

He was drafted because he is a good hitter that plays a premium position.

But to say ALL of his value is behind the plate is absurd. He was drafted because he is a good hitter that plays a premium position. It's all well and good to say that, but the fact is that with catching prospects, because of their skill sets, most of them can't slide down the spectrum like other players. If a normal SS can't handle the position but can swing the bat, no problem, slide him to 2B or 3B. Their value isn't entirely dependent on their position. If a 2B or 3B can't handle that position but can hit the ball, slide them to CF. And then to a corner... and then to 1B. If a catcher can't handle the position but he can swing the bat, for most catchers, he better be able to swing the bat like a motherf***er because all of a sudden he's a f***ing first baseman where a guy like Miguel Cabrera can be the f***ing 5th best hitter at the position in any given year. Catchers who can play anything other than C or 1B are a rare breed. Maybe Pentecost can do that, Carlos Santana is an example, but it's very unlikely.

A lot of good hitting catchers also get moved early on to preserve their legs. Guys like Bryce Harper, Wil Myers to name a couple.

Pablo Sandoval used to be a catcher. One of the best defensive 3B in the league. Josh Donaldson too and now he's elite. Hell, didn't Lawrie used to be a catcher? I'm 90% sure he was.
Laika Community Moderator Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Lots of guys get moved out from behind the dish after getting drafted for developmental reasons. I always wonder how good a guy like Myers or Harper or Lawrie would be defensively if they stayed behind the plate.
