AA, please do not rush Norris and Pompey. would rather have Pillar's punchable face in the lineup than ruining legit prospects who could become above-average MLBers. let Morrow, Janssen, and Rasmus walk. fill pen with Drabek and Nolin. give Delabar another crack retool, use remaining savings post-Reyes $6 mill to get another bat and grind it out for a potential 2nd WC spot in 2015.
baubau Verified Member Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 What kind of impact would being able to bunt for a hit really have on Gose's offensive profile? http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2012/12/10/3748738/best-bunter-all-time-career-bunt-hits-bases-empty-mlb This is the all-time leaderboard for bunt hits in a season. The first column is the number of attempts and the second is the number of hits. The percentages are times reached based on a hit and times reached based on a hit or error. So if he's absolute elite at bunting for a hit, we're talking something like 20 hits over 40 attempts. It certainly would be nice for him to do that but I'm not convinced that's really the problem. If anything, I'd say the inablility to bunt hints at what might be an overall problem with coachability. Darn, thought bunting may have a bigger impact than just at best 20 ish more hits. Guess Gose will always just be best as a 4th outfielder at this point unless he learns how to hit.

Team just has to win & all will be forgotten.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Rios on a cheap one year deal to play LF for a year wouldn't be a bad idea if you assume he still has a 3 win season left in him and this season was just an off year. Hard to say.
vdartanian Verified Member Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Rios will never some back to Toronto on his own volition....and I'm pretty sure the team is still trying to wash Rios' stench from their hands. Which is too bad, my #15 baby blue Friday night throwback jersey was one of my favorites. Too bad he ended up being such a douchebag at the end. I blame the cocaine!

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 Pompey should start the year with the Jays. He seems like he is thriving on momentum. To me he has looked more confident with 30 at bats then Gose with 300 Resign Melky and have Pompey start in cf. The time for waiting is over. It's the time for doing

Plus I don't even think he had 100 PA's at Buffalo. Give him an extended look in ST where he faces as many MLB pitchers as possible and let him force his way up from Buffalo. Go with a Gose/Pillar platoon. Maybe see if you can resign Rasmus at a discount for 1 year if Melky's price goes too high. Rasmus, Gose and Pillar as long as you play Rasmus in LF and Gose in CF against RHP and as long as they upgrade SS/2B and possibly C. Best case scenario: Pompey continues his ascent, Rasmus gets off to a good start. You trade Rasmus in June and call up Pompey. Lawrie, Pompey, Kottaras and Martin all on the team, ensuring that there are 3 Canadian position players every game....imagine the PR bonanza Rogers would have!!! LOL. Anyway...yes, let Pompey work his way up.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 Lol at a Rasmus, Gose, Pillar outfield. That definitely does not work. Not saying that's what they should do. I mentioned it as a possibility if Cabrera's price is too high. Maybe another FA at a lower price. It's certainly not out of the question that Rasmus has a good year next year, it's just the way he goes. Besides, a Gose/Pillar CF platoon seems likely so you can "lol" all you want, but it's not that far-fetched. Whether it works or not is another matter. Remember, the team went into 2014 with Ryan Goins as the starter at 2B and Moises Sierra as its 4th OF. Having Rasmus, Gose and Pillar splitting time in LF/CF is better than that.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 All I'm saying is that there are players who can adapt and make transitions easier than others at a young age, and I think Pompey is that type. He's got the raw skills and seems to be an excellent student of the game. I say start him in CF to start the year. During his transition to the MLB, he'll still be putting up more value than Gose or Pillar. It won't take him long to make the move, he's a natural.

I just think he should start in AAA to get more seasoning. Remember, Brett Lawrie tore the cover off the ball in a larger sample size in 2011 and it didn't translate the next year, just as an example. Nothing wrong with giving Pompey lots of PA's in ST and sending him to Buffalo to start the year, sort of the same thing they did with Stroman. The same applies to Sanchez and Norris. How much they need out of the Gose/Pillar (or a Denorfia type FA), will depend on how the address LF, SS/2B and C, although I don't think they will spend much time trying to improve C, as well as what they do with Lind.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 Pompey has only 165 ABs above A ball. Great to have him performing so well but he needs to be at AAA for more than 53 ABs Planning for an OF of Pompey, Gose, Pillar and Bautista would indicate to me a severe budget cut.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 As much as the "Canadian" angle is joked about often...as soon as DP came to bat a very dead crowd got loud. He might be marketable which might give him value to them starting the season.

Plus, this would mean 3 everyday Canadians position players...endless PR bonanza!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 1. Try to sign Melky 2. See how Pompey does in the AFL Then decide what to do Can't decide now
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 1. Try to sign Melky 2. See how Pompey does in the AFL Then decide what to do Can't decide now They really shouldn't be linked. Pompey should start the year in Buffalo for developmental reasons. Sign Chris Young as a stop-gap centerfielder.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 I'm not really convinced that every prospect needs "AAA seasoning" or a substantial amount of "AAA seasoning". Development is rarely linear, where players learn little things and make little improvements at each level, reaching the big leagues as some kind of finished developmental product. Sometimes players are just simply good enough or not good enough. Or, development is essentially stochastic (Arrieta, DeGrom). Jose Fernandez went from A+ to an immediate big league Ace while improving his peripherals. Anthony Gose has like, 1100 PA of "AAA seasoning" and he's probably gotten worse. Pompey is in the big leagues, looking like he belongs, consistently having good at bats, driving the baseball and showing XB pop/speed, and playing good D. Yeah his statistical sample size will be small for MLB, AAA, and AA, but if you take his entire season as a continuity you have a kid who climbed the ladder from A+ and put up an .850 OPS at each level, so he never missed a beat. I wouldn't start him in AAA as a rule or anything. I could get behind him being the everyday CF as long as LF is filled with a good trade / free agent, and the CF backup plan isn't just a Gose/Pillar platoon. Or, him in LF and a good CF brought in (defense for days). But they will probably go with Pompey in LF and Gose/Pillar platooning CF.

GNick49 Verified Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 I've seen this before....Look how good Snider looked in 2008, or Brett Lawrie in 2011. A few games in August and September doesn't speak much for future starting position. Most clubs are just playing out the string with AAAA players or veterans who can't wait for long season to be over
nmrch Verified Member Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 If Pompey turns out to be Brett Lawrie minus the injuries, i think we'll take that, afterall 3.4 WAR per 150 games is nothing to sneeze at.
