burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 In a couple of years from now would you rather a legit #2 starter or a legit closer? Obviously the former but what are the chances Sanchez becomes a #2 starter, 10%? His realistic upside is a number 3 starter who probably is a number 4 starter or dominant reliever
StiebSlider Verified Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 ^ Command is where its at. I think Janssen has earned to right to pitch himself out of the spot. If he really has a lengthy meltdown then fill it with whoever. Until that happens though id rather see him up in the 9th than some kid kid with a "good" fastball.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I just don't want to go back to the days of the revolving closers like koch accardo Batista Gregg hmm...if only Francisco "Coco" Cordero could make a comeback we would be stabilized at closer.

StiebSlider Verified Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 wat Maybe Jeff Mathis could fill the role, he's definitely one of the better pitchers we've had in a while.

His realistic upside is a number 3 starter who probably is a number 4 starter or dominant reliever There's also a < 10% chance of any top of the rotation arm signing in TO as a free agent at anytime in the foreseeable future. Moving him to the pen and being a dominant reliever will always be an option but switching him back to starter will not.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 How has this nonsense thread not been closed. So much trolling these days I can't keep up with it. And where the f*** is fatcow? So I guess Zaun and Barker are trolls too for suggesting this

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 The quality of posts on this forum has taken hard turn for the worse. There is very little honest-to-goodness Blue Jays talk anymore. Quite honestly, it’s all a bunch of nonsensical conjecture and/or keyboard warriors trying to pronounce themselves king of the f***ing molehill. What you said and the internet usually goes hand in hand. However, I will say this forum is worse than most when it comes to that.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 In a couple of years from now would you rather a legit #2 starter or a legit closer? I'd rather Daniel Norris over Aaron Sanchez. That's what you mean, right?

kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I'd rather Daniel Norris over Aaron Sanchez. That's what you mean, right? What is the success rate of prospect starters? So if you have group of Norris, Sanchez, Castro, Nolin, Osuna, Graveman, Hoffman, Tirado, Labourt, De Jong, Smoral, what % would usually make it to the majors and have a decent career (5 years ) as a starter ? 30 %? 40%? or would it be even that high?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 I don't understand your point (probably because you are just scrambling for excuses) and why age comes into play. Would you not say that guys are sitting on McGee's fastball? He's not a LOOGY, so your point about mostly lefties was probably done without a cursory check. Your point was that Sanchez isn't getting whiffs because he uses his fastball a lot. I can find a different guy if McGee doesn't fit. I'm not scrambling for excuses. I have an opinion. McGee is a good pitcher. He hits his spots better. He's a more mature pitcher. His fastball doesn't move as much as Sanchez'. They are different pitchers. Sanchez has a 65% ground ball percentage...McGee has a 40% ground ball percentage. Sanchez will get more whiffs as he utilizes the fastball less, learns to pitch and hits spots better. It's a combination of command, knowledge and the utilization of other pitches to keep hitters guessing more. I get it. You disagree with me. It's a free country. Sanchez is still a great young pitcher. Do you disagree?

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 AA suggested Sanchez could open the season in the bullpen, to at least control his innings. ------------ I think more of the problem would be that you CAN'T have discussion on here about the Jays, and baseball. Because anything that isn't WAR (or similarly-based) is considered "trolling" and shouted down with comments accusing people of "f***ing idiocy." ----------- Sanchez in the bullpen is a viable, and logical, possibility. Patented moogy bad counter-point for the sake of counter-point. You don't need advanced stats to tell you using Sanchez in the bp is the idea if an idiot.

As far as starting him in the bullpen to start the year next year; I can see the argument that this wouldn't be worst thing in the world, but I would still prefer him as a starter next year.

Why would you waste control of him in the bp? Why start him in the bp then have to stretch him out when you want him to start? Nothing about it makes sense.

Andrick Verified Member Posted September 4, 2014 Posted September 4, 2014 These stats represent only a very small sample size obviously, but Sanchez pitched 32.1 innings as a starter in Buffalo this year over 6 starts. - His ERA through innings 1 through 3 in those 6 starts was 1.00. Only 2 earned runs over 18 innings. - His ERA after the 3rd inning in those 6 starts jumped way up to 8.16. 13 earned runs over 14.1 innings where he went beyond the 3rd (a 10.80 ERA after the 4th as well). You can read into those stats what you will, although that small sample certainly suggests that Sanchez was much, much more effective against AAA hitters the 1st time through the order than he was when facing them a 2nd and 3rd time.

No. Do I think he has a chance to be a decent 2/3? Possibly. Your argument about his fastball makes absolutely no sense but I admire you for sticking to your guns even in the face of being completely wrong.
