glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 You're probably right, but what scares me is that what do they have after Estrada and Norris? Their SP depth is not great and if they signed/traded for a solid SP, you could move Sanchez to the BP, and if/when injuries happen you have Estrada as your replacement. Plus, you could also call up Norris and even send Sanchez down to stretch him out for a couple of weeks (a la Stroman) and then bring him back up to start. I'd love to get Shields on a 3 year deal, but he will probably end up with a 5 year contract which I'd stay away from. If Alex promotes players as rapidly as he did last season, they may have more internal options by mid-season, but yes after trading Graveman and Nolin the depth is not very strong. If Estrada can be an effective swing man, that would help a lot.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Not exactly "roster" per se, but Tim Langton has signed a 1 year deal to continue being the PA announcer at Rogers Centre. (Per: his daughter and I have a mutual friend...)
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Happ, Nolin and Graveman out; Jays need add one or two depth guys.

They also re-acquired Hendriks which makes a lot more sense now than it did at the time. RosterResource says he still has options: http://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-toronto-blue-jays/

The quality of the lot is debatable, but the depth is the same, warm bodies wise.

It's funny about Hendriks because I'm pretty sure everyobody was puzzled by his re-acquisition because we thought he was out of options but if RosterResource is right and he does have options, it sheds a whole new light on the trade.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I can't believe BBREF doesn't have info on options. They really should.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I can't believe BBREF doesn't have info on options. They really should. It's a really easy project if you have the initial date added to the 40 man. That info unfortunately involves scrounging transaction pages...and prior to 5 years ago that info isn't on transaction pages (only added to the 40 man and called up). Also you get those guys that get DFA'd and pass through waivers, that time in the minors does not count against.

RosterResource says he still has options: http://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-toronto-blue-jays/ He used up an option in 2012 (spent 3 months in the minors), 2013 and 2014. Pretty sure of this one.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Papelbon if he is willing would look damn good in blue
flafson Verified Member Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 The guy been losing velocity for the past 3 years, he's down to 91.2 on his fast ball in 2014. Plus, he is owed 13mil for next year. Is he that much better than our old closer? P.S, he had a really low BABIP in 2014.

Has never been less than 1
flafson Verified Member Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 He had 1.7 war with a lot of luck on balls in play. I'm guessing if you remove that luck, his war falls below 1. So you are giving him Bautista money for little more than Kawasaki's production. Surely we can find better value.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Papelbon if he is willing would look damn good in blue I would have a super hard time cheering for Pigf***er McGee...

Oh I see So basically its fine to rely on WAR when it's convenient but when it isn't there are flaws So subjective
flafson Verified Member Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Oh I see So basically its fine to rely on WAR when it's convenient but when it isn't there are flaws So subjective Most of his career he had BABIP around .300 mark, last year it was .247. I'm not an expert on how it's calculated but i'm guessing higher BABIP will result in higher WAR. If he regresses to his normal self then it's only natural to assume his WAR will drop as well. So what i'm assuming is 2013 like year with less velocity. Again, correct me if i'm wrong.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 A bit worrying that nothing has been done on the pen yet. Training camp is now not too far, I would have to assume AA is working his butt off, but still. This pen is not good enough and at least 2 relievers away (Assuming Sanchez is a reliever). Need Proven Relievers.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 If Sanchez does stay in the pen, who's the #5? If it's Marco Estrada...is it the right move? Do we really want him pitching more innings than Sanchez? Is it Daniel Norris? Is everyone confident that he's ready? Am I missing anybody? Those are the most obvious candidates. Beyond that there's Liam Hendriks who as maligned as he is still has an impressive track record in the minor (career K/BB over 5), Todd Redmond, Chad Jenkins and new guy Juan Pablo Oramas. If you want to be really optimistic, you could add Drabek and Romero to the list.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Really so no need for them to compete in spring training for it? Why is that? I would still rather sign shields and start both in AAA to start the season.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 A bit worrying indeed did you just reply to your own quote?
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Norris should get #5 over Sanchez anyways. He hasn't fully matured into his body yet. He needs to start the year in the minors and hopefully he has bulked up a bit in the offseason.
