You'd have to watch the outing to see how good or bad it was. He threw strikes, which is good. He got people to miss, on occasion, which is good. But he also gave up two ground ball base hits, and 2 line drives. Were the grounders smashed ... and on pitches a better hitter would have possibly jacked? Was he "lucky" not to give up a double on the line drive base hit? Was he "lucky" the defender was in the right spot on the line drive for an out?

He's now a reliever. He goes out for 1 inning and gives the opposition his best stuff over that 1 inning. Doesn't have to hold anything back. And, yet, some guy who can't buy a hit (Victorino, who up until that point had 1 hit in 33 plate appearances in his rehab stint, including time in the Rookie league), and a couple guys who are fairly recent AAA promotees and are not smashing the ball make some solid contact off of him. He threw a ton of pitches. Failed starters with questionable command and "plus" stuff tend to have better control when only having to throw reliever innings. And it doesn't translate back to starting.

I agree, you would have had to see him pitch. Ground balls are usually a good sign. The thing about being lucky here or there, over time things tend to even out. 2 line drives, one ended up in an out, one in a single. 2 ground balls and both ended up in hits. The throwing error also played in, which had nothing to do with the pitcher. If we've learned anything from the home run derby, it's not easy to jack it out of the park. I have no doubt Sanchez will have some success as long as he throws strikes. As been mentioned a million times, he has not been able to throw strikes and one inning of throwing strikes is clearly not enough to build lots of confidence. If he goes another 20 innings and only walks 4 or 5 batters combined with the previous 20 innings of work with 5 walks you will be talking 40 innings of work with better command and have at least a foundation to build upon. However, he could walk 3 batters next time out. I'm sure after his next outing of 20 or 30 pitches we can have another lengthy meaningful chat. We've pretty much dissected this outing as much as humanly possible.

I was thinking about this.

I think lets look at what we know

AA doesn't have good prospects to deal, or wants to deal. However he does have some relief pitcher. What if Alex's plan is to deal one of Cecil, Mcgowan, Loup or Jansenn. Then replace them down the stretch with Sanchez and Norris. Why not right? Jansenn is a free agent. If Seatle acquires Zobrist, then AA can go after Frankilin, and our prospects wont be anything for them. However our relievers might interest them a lot more, as they are also contending

How sad am I that I checked my xfinity app, noticed they'll be replaying the Bisons/PawSox game at 2, and I'll be recording it to watch Sanchez's inning? I'm looking for anything to give me hope, since I hate Sanchez as a pitcher. Not hate in the way I hate Lawrie or Bautista (who I hate as people, and want to punch them in the face repeatedly just for being them), but in terms of his chances of being successful. I'd like to be wrong, and see reasons to change my mind.

Issues man

Bautista and Lawrie don't seem nearly as bad as you make them out to be

Baseball America chat today:

Doug (Kitchener, Ontario, Canada): With Sanchez moving to the pen and possibly being in Toronto's pen soon . What are the chances that Daniel Norris will be in Toronto before the end of the year?

Ben Badler: I don't think he's ready, although I'm going to see him again this weekend. Then again, I don't think Sanchez is ready to get big league hitters out either.

The Sanchez inning ....

Victorino (RH): Inside high called strike. Just foul bounder down 1st base line on inside fastball (would have been a double or triple). Has him 0-2. Huge curve low and outside. High and outside fastball, ball 2. Looked like an inside cutter type of pitch which Victorino pulls through the hole at SS. Not smashed, but the right spot (would have been an infield hit if the SS got to it deep in the hole running toward 3B).

Torres (LH): Outside high fastball. Ump says he went on a check swing. Another high outside fastball for a ball. Outside fastball fouled off. Outside high fastball fouled off. Outside curve catches the zone (looked like a ball, but close enough) and he's out.

Travis Shaw (LH): Sanchez is back to his habitual issue of somehow screwing up what little motion he does have. Landing too short and flying open, unable to follow through, with the ball high and wide for the first two pitches. He keeps looking at his landing position. How do you f*** up no motion? This is why you don't start straight up, and finish straight up. It's pretty basic. A third ball (a little closer to the plate, but a clear ball outside) leaves him sitting 3-0. Finally Shaw watches the first strike (straight fastball) inside and the next pitch is grooved and he takes it opposite field for the easy single.

Glenn is charging in LF and Victorino turns on the jets to challenge him at 3B. Glenn makes a decent, on-line throw, but it hits Victorino as he's sliding (actually shouldn't have one-hopped it with the runner coming in - had to throw it on a line to avoid that possibility). Shaw is headed to 2B at the same time. It bounces away from LaRoche a little, but he can't find it and Victorino takes off for home, the throw home is late, Victorino is safe and Shaw smartly takes 3rd on the throw.

Rivero (RH): Big curve for a ball outside. Grooves a straight fastball middle-out and Rivero rakes it - pulls it over Goins, who is playing in. Shaw comes in to score. Good job in the OF to cut it off and stop Rivero at 1st, but Shaw would have definitely scored from 2B if he was still there.

Pitching coach comes out and tells Sanchez he sucks ... Sanchez nods, says "yup" and burps.

Hassan (RH): Inside and high fastball for a ball. Down the middle for a strike on what appeared to be a straight offspeed pitch. Nice inside pitch with filthy movement that Hassan swings through. Huge breaker outside, but Hassan protects and fouls off (would have been a ball). Outside breaker that Sanchez hung on to too long, outside and in dirt for a ball. Inside and up fastball that Hassan gets jammed on, and fouls off his shin. He's hurt. Low fastball middle of the plate, probably a ball, that Hassan fouls off. Nice fastball low and outside part of the plate. Probably a ball, but called a strike. Nice borderline pitch the hitter can't hit.

Marrero (RH): Grooves the first pitch right down the middle and laces it. Goins is basically a step in from the OF grass, takes two steps to his right and back into the grass and leaps out, reaches out and back and snags the liner during his dive. Well struck ball.

Tough to tell without a side-by-side if his slot is up at all. If someone wouldn't have told me they moved it up, I definitely wouldn't have noticed anything, and I can't really see it just looking at it (and looking at old video). Looks about the same. Still the same old issue of missing up and in (to a RH) or up and away (to a LH). Takes talent to barely have a motion and still screw it up (actually, that's not true, like I said before - that's part of the reason you use your legs and you actually bend and follow through - consistency, and you don't fly open as often ... that's on top of reducing the wear and tear on your arm).

Saw absolutely nothing to make me any happier about Sanchez. Actually, I'm angrier than I was before.

Roy Halladay did not have a big stride and finished high and his career turned out okay. His arm slot was lower than sanchez, but I haven't seen sanchez lately. I think you're oversimplifying how to consistently hit your release point. Anyways....Sanchez had another inning today. 1 hit no runs, no walks no strikeouts. A ground ball single followed by another groundball that ended up in a double play and a pop up...12 pitches 7 strikes.
