Not a bad idea. I wonder if maybe Happ had flashbacks. Not making a joke or mocking the guy but could be something that happened too.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Didn't know where to put but WTH new thread Gibby using RAD on 4 days rest for the last game before the AS break I like it Better than Happ. I like it too.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Dickey doesnt even have a ucl. pitch him every third day
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 anything involving happ not playing baseball is a good move
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Didn't know where to put but WTH new thread Gibby using RAD on 4 days rest for the last game before the AS break I like it Solid move...extra work for the knuckler before the break after a solid last start. Ill take my chances with RA with 4 days rest over Happ.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 They could probably pitch Buehrle every third day too. Then alternate Stroman and Hutch in the third rotation slot. And kick Happ to the curb.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Maybe they're hoping Happ will have an extra day on his AS break to get lost and not come back?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Maybe they're hoping Happ will have an extra day on his AS break to get lost and not come back? I'd give him extended rest too, like... To the end of the season.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 So I guess Happ is back on everyone's hate list, lol. He's a 5th starter, nothing more. This should've been an easy decision.

This should've been an easy decision. Though it's the first time Gibby has done it, even though the schedule early in the season would have allowed him to do it occasionally. Anyway, good call. Happ has had some good starts, but def more bad ones, and Dickey has been pretty good.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Inb4 the forum has Dickey on its shitlist and Happ is a god again within two weeks time.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 12, 2014 Author Posted July 12, 2014 In fact, when you look at the numbers, Dickey really has been better than most of us probably realize. We are all nervous when he pitches because he does occasionally blow up, and we all remember the games where he loaded up the bases and was pulled, for better or worse. But overall he really has been decent. xFIP barely higher than Hutchison's and ERA same.

For a "new guy" you have this place figured out pretty well. And love calling people out on it. Yes, Dickey and Happ are always one horrendous start away from people calling for their heads.

But overall he really has been decent. No, actually, he's been far from decent. He's in the role of #2 starter, and he's barely pitched enough to be considered a #5 on a wild card team. 65 starting pitchers and 20 relievers have already provided more value than RA Dickey. This thread is nothing more than a flavour of the week bandwagon kicking up dust over his last start. It'll continue until he pitches well, and the moment he fumbles, there will be a new thread talking about how garbage he is. Even Happ has out-pitched him so far.

Is it supposed to take more than a year to "figure this place out"? lol I don't think it takes new posters more than a few days to realize how reactionary this board generally is.

Exactly how has Happ outpitched Dickey this year...give me a break. Dickey is trending in the right direction. He's posted a 3.56 ERA over his last 10. His innings are down a bit this year, but still a decent amount pitched. A 3.86 ERA is not a number 6 on most teams. I'm sure you jerk off to fangraphs WAR, but the reality is once you get past the first 40 pitchers there differences start to become negligible. One more good start by dickey and he's jump up 15 to 20 spots on your sacred WAR table.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Dickey WAR - 1.1 (RA-9 WAR for knuckleballers) Happ WAR - 0.7 Dickey > Happ so far
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Dickey WAR - 1.1 (RA-9 WAR for knuckleballers) Happ WAR - 0.7 Dickey > Happ so far well I was too lazy to look it up, but I couldn't imagine that on any level that one could say that Happ has outperformed Dickey. Dickey has been a disappointment, but he hasn't been utterly terrible. Hopefully he can continue to pitch well the rest of the way and be a solid number 3 for us.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Dickey WAR - 1.1 (RA-9 WAR for knuckleballers) Happ WAR - 0.7 Dickey > Happ so far In 40 fewer innings. Happ was injured for the first three weeks of the season, and then had to make three appearances in relief. 0.8 fWAR in 72 innings as a starter. Happ has been a better pitcher, and if anyone wants to dispute that, the best they can come away with is that they've been exactly the same, the difference is that negligible. It's nowhere near as far as needing to rejoice over the fact that Dickey is replacing Happ in a certain spot of the rotation cycle. They've both been the epitome of mediocre.

It's a pretty lame debate. Crap versus crap lol.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 True. Dickey's mean RoS projection is better though. It's a pretty lame debate. Crap versus crap lol. That's basically what I pointed out after editing that post. I believe he's outpitched him, but if he hasn't, then they're basically a variation of the exact same guy. Exact same K/BB. Happ has a slightly lower FIP, xFIP and gives up a few less homers, while Dickey has a slightly higher groundball ratio, leaves a bit more on base, and has a better ERA. http://i.gyazo.com/9f873192c3ddb8ce51dca91b361370a1.png Like I said, they've both been mediocre defined. Nobody should give a s*** which one of them is pitching on any given day, unless they can pull up research that tells us where and how exactly Dickey's knuckler is more effective. Outside of that, it's basically-passable-s*** vs basically-passable-s***. Ideally you replace both, but we'll be lucky if they even replace one.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Ah. Yeah, I'm inclined to agree. I wouldn't mind one of them as a 5 starter but both of them with no ace is worrisome.

Who decided his "role is a number 2 starter". You? I laugh sometimes at these arbitratry numbers we assign guys. During the season you run 5 guys out there in a rotation. You can call them whatever you want. They are 5 starting pitchers who take turns. In the playoffs yes you order your guys in descending ability generally, but even then sometimes it comes down to days off and matchups. We all wanted an ace in Dickey and we didn't get one. But he has not been garbage, and I think he's going to be better than Happ this season overall. I know you like to be contrary and therefore have chosen to take the opposing view that "even Happ has out-pitched him so far". Go ahead. I'm just glad Gibby is doing this tomorrow. If Dickey gets rocked tomorrow we'll all be mad, but it was still, IMO a good decision. Happ has looked anything but good over the last few starts and Dickey has looked decent.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 12, 2014 Author Posted July 12, 2014 For the record, if we do manage to scrape in to playoffs I would feel MUCH better about our chances of winning a series if our rotation started with a Price/Shields caliber guy. But it's almost certainly not going to happen.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Who decided his "role is a number 2 starter". You? Or maybe the people who pitched him to throw the 2nd most starts? Maybe that.
