Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 When he pitches well, we must bow down and admit his baseball superiority and how great the trade was for him. When he gets blown out we have to s*** all over him and demand AA pick up another starter. Tonight he was a beast. If only he could face tired, mediocre offenses every game.

He's a back end of the rotation guy who is having a good season so far.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 I beat up Happ and AA,s keeping him quite a bit in the off season. While I agreed he was an ok 5th starter I posted many times that he waspaid too much and we had options just as good in Redmond, Rogers and the kids that were more cost effective. Obviously that was wrong but the only guy on the board who kept pointing it out to me was Chappy. You were right Chappy. We are damn lucky AA stuck by him and even if he only has his good command 1/2 the time he will be a valuable asset this year and NOT overpaid. No longer Happless his command of his 95 mph fastball makes him a very valuable 5th starter. All we need now is to get healthy, stay healthy and get Dickey,Hutch and Stroman a little more consistent.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Happ's performance dispels the notion that Kratz made the difference. I still think Happ is going to eat s***. All you have to do is sit on his fastball. Chicago came in after an exhausting series in Baltimore. But I was surprised at the # of +96 mph fastballs in the 8th inning yesterday. Where was that when he was in the bullpen?

eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Missed the game, did he look good or did the Sox just look really bad? They don't have a great offense but it's also not a terrible one either.

To me that's a win for Happ. He was getting a lot of swings and misses and was throwing as high as 96 when he was over 100 pitches already. I give him lots of credit for last night even if the Sox aren't exactly an elite offense.
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 "Happ's outing continues a bizarre season-long trend of alternating between good and bad starts. After making his first start on May 5 with five scoreless innings against the Phillies, Happ has been effective in his odd starts (one, three, etc) but has struggled in his even outings. For the odd outings, Happ is a perfect 6-0 with a 1.18 ERA (5 ER, 38 IP) and five quality starts. For the even ones, he is 1-4 with a 9.53 ERA (24 ER, 22 2/3 IP) and zero quality starts."

Buster Verified Member Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 so easy: we just skip his even starts.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 He is a #5 pitcher which means if he wins ill take it, if he loses I expect it. You cant be a solid starter when any given start you might only go 2 innings because you cant find the plate. I don't trust him when he takes the mound. For the same reason, I cant say Hutch is a solid starter (though I would like to think he will be). Has to be able to have solid outings at home first.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Happ's a crapshoot and gets rattled easily.

They don't have a great offense but it's also not a terrible one either. Happ pitched a half decent game, but the sox were also swinging at everything. Not really sure how much credit to give Happ as I think a more patient team probably would have made him throw those 120 pitches in 2 fewer innings, but he got the job done. It certainly wasn't as dominating a start as the plain numbers suggest.

Jellz Verified Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 I didn't catch this game, but going off his stat line it looks like an efficient outing from Happ. No walks and he pitched deep into the game. Happ's been a rather pleasant surprise for the most part this year.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 i've been hating on happ a lot but my god has he been overshadowed by this team's inability to hit left handed pitching. i mean what did AA think would happen, some random AAA guy would start mashing lefties?

Happ's been a rather pleasant surprise for the most part this year. Better outing than the stat line. They clustered a few hits together and the defence let him down a bit in the inning he gave up three runs. He had some bad luck lead to the run in the first inning. Very solid start from Happ today.
Slot Machine Verified Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 The funny thing is if the Jays pick up a starter who gets bumped from the rotation? Happ's numbers are basically identical to Dickey's but with fewer innings.
Caper Verified Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 This was a weird one. I started off comfortably hating J Happ and wanting him cut.... and finished thinking he has solidified hos spot in the rotation. Usually it's game to game.. this was an in game switch.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Pitching exactly like a #5 pitcher should pitch.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Happ throws the same very game, it's just a matter of how disciplined the hitters are who face him. Teams that take close pitches eat him alive, free swinging teams get eaten. He has no real command of his stuff and can't throw quality strikes consistently. He can throw them in the strike zone mostly, But lots of meatballs that some days get crushed, other days don't. He's very volatile.

I thought missing Lawrie might hurt but... He has a lower OPS against lefties than righties. Whoulda thunk it?

In his defense when he actually has fastball command he pitches a good game considering what you would expect from any 5th starter. There might be something about his delivery that cause some deception causing lots of swings and misses, not to mention that he can miraculously throw it at 94 when he needs to topping out at 96! Of course when he doesn't know where it's going then he's the sack of s*** we all loathe and want outside our rotation as soon as possible.

Happ's numbers are basically identical to Dickey's but with fewer innings. I'm of the opinion that once Morrow comes back or someone else is brought in, one of the two young guys goes. If Hutch is on an innings limit this year, would it be possible to rest him in July/August then bring him back in September and consider him as one of the top 3 in the playoffs? I'm unaware of any team ever doing that...essentially a healthy DL stint to save his arm.

I think we will start seeing extra days rest and even skipping the odd start to try and get them to the end of the season. Once we get into the playoffs, if it's a huge concern at that point we may see one or both work out of the pen.
